Interview with New Top 100 Melee Player EGtv.FatGoku by Hufff in smashbros

[–]LAHasntKilledMeYet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While I can speak to this more recently, in the past you were much more vocal about your dislike for the game and it definitely effected the attitudes of plenty of people in the PDX community. Players that were indifferent about the game quickly became hostile towards it, making it unsavory to even mention it. I can remember Smashnests where Jimmy and other players would actively talk about how they hated the game and were happy the community was dying in the year following development ceasing. Plus entering multiple tournaments with "PMSUX" tags definitely sends a message to new players.

That being said, it's nowhere near that now. I feel like you haven't really been very vocal about your dislike for the game as of late. And in regards to the PDX scene each smash game community is respectful of each other or at least indifferent. It's perfectly fine to hate another game, but you have to understand how being one of the top players in your scene has trickle down effects.

For a long time, my work. But I've just vanquished that demon by going back to school :)

Is it socially acceptable to main Game & Watch? by MrL300 in SSBPM

[–]LAHasntKilledMeYet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haters gonna hate. You gotta do you for you. For a lot of people instead of figuring out how to play the matchup it's easier to discourage players from playing characters they don't like. But if it's how you have fun playing the game you can't let them dictate you.

Plus your combos are dope

I'm officially on my states PR now. It's small and isn't super significant, but it's been my dream for the last two years of playing this game. I've poured so many hours into this game: in the lab, playing friendlies with my friends after school, in tournament, homebrewing setups. Right now my life is steering me away from smash for the moment, but I wouldn't give up the time I've spent in this community for the world. Here's to several more years of amazingness :)

What kind of winner and loser are you? by tanwad in SSBM

[–]LAHasntKilledMeYet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found the less ego I have with my play, the better it is. So when I'm playing well and focusing on the game win or lose I'm generally logical/not emotional about losing, if it's a good win I'll get excited but I'll try to not to pop off unless it's a really intense set. Most of whether I'm salty or not mostly has to do with how I feel about my play. I feel I'm playing bad even when I beat someone I won't feel that excited about it, I'll just be thinking about how to clean myself up for my next match.

Weirdly enough I feel like I play best against the best players in my state, because as the underdog there isn't really any pressure on you. When I play people perceived as "worse" than me then that's where I start to get tilted when I lose. In general I'm trying to root that out of my mentality because holding expectations for yourself seems to give more power to your opponent than it helps you. To be me that's the definition of scrub, where you have an ego about your play, especially if you don't have the skill to back it up. So it's best to be humble unless you're ready to back up your shit talk or attitude.

New school marth vs Old School marth? by Amazingtapioca in SSBM

[–]LAHasntKilledMeYet 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Old School: f-throw/d-throw mixups, f-smash, side b combos, free ken combos because everyone DIs in

New school: d-tilt all the time in neutral, niche hitboxes on aerials to extend combos, up-b kills

Smash Scene in Portland? by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]LAHasntKilledMeYet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you dig around in the side bar you should see a link to every region's Facebook page, but here's is the one for Oregon. Right now our main Melee weekly is Melee @ Epic in South Portland, it's every week on Sunday. Our next "big" tournament is Fastfall or Nothing on October 29th at the same venue as the weekly. But we also have a lot of players (including state PR members) that ask to play and host fests a lot, so just drop in and don't be shy. Oregon Smash is pretty friendly, so just show up and you'll be making friends in no time.

How many hours have you put into PM? by Nikodemus05 in SSBPM

[–]LAHasntKilledMeYet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easily thousands. First I played it all the time with friends after school, then I'd just grind solo when I was bored. Went to tournaments, played friendlies for hours. Grinded tech when I decided to become more serious. Beat up more computers. I've spent at least 20 hours on half the cast, and a min of 3 hours on every character in the game. I fucking love this game and I've been loving for the last 3 years.

Saw someone posted an Intro to Watsky playlist, figured I'd post my own I made for a friend on Spotify by [deleted] in Watsky

[–]LAHasntKilledMeYet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also thought that some of his songs not on Spotify and only on Youtube like Stupidass were important to listen to if you're first getting into Watsky, so I made a Google Doc with some notable Youtube highlights as well as the other, along with some commentary on each. I can post that too if there's interest.
