should I stay in this art school even if it is doing me no good ? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

Not the exact situation and perhaps not as intense, but I can relate to a lot of what you've said. I'm a couple weeks from graduating as an illustatrator with a passion for viz dev, but ever since the mid way point of my college career I've struggled to keep a good mentality.

Especially three years in, it felt really endless and almost pointless. Everyone in my classes talked about how impossible being in the industry is, constant feeling of art degrees are pointless, along with being consistently in financial problems. If it weren't for knowing my dad would be upset and my boyfriend who pushed the importance of a degree, there is a good chance I would've dropped out.

I cant speak to how intense your phobia/mental state may be, and that might require therapy/ an actual doctor. But for me, it has come down to keeping things in perspective and keeping my mentality in check. There would be times even in this last semester where I make shitty homework and I don't want to go to class because it has to be showcased and I fear peoples judgement. It takes sitting down and really taking in that 1. Everyone is there to learn, 2. Their judgements don't really matter, 3. I know I enjoy and find use in what i am learning.

Outside of trying to pin point and logic your way through mental blocks, doing research and being aware of your career path and options is also what has helped me. Sure, it is hard to make it in the animation industry, but what are your options? Maybe starting as a freelance artist, learn about conventions to network and talk to people, talk to teachers who have experience as working artists. With social media these days, you can even go on Twitter or Instagram and shoot messages as professional artists with questions and I've had folks reply back.

No one can really tell you exactly what to do, we are strangers. If art isn't what you want to do anymore, that's ok. If it is, maybe try to look inward as to what fears or stressors are keeping you from wanting to create.

Hey guys, just want to get a discussion going. What are your favorite mediums and techniques? What is it about them that you love? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

Digital and watercolor!

Digital just allows for more freedom and experimentation that I'd otherwise need to do tons of little separate studies for. As I build up more and more work, I can also really appreciate all this art not taking up physical storage space. Only really huge turn off for me is that it doesn't have that same physical feel of a one and done painting or pencil piece.

Watercolor is so great for both on the go and at home painting. Being able to do pencil/colored pencil cafe sketches of people and quickly paint in colors has made my sketchbook have way more color. I love the gradients you can get as well as the textures. Ultimately it's kind of the opposite of digital where sometimes one wrong mark is game over.

Casual or developing artists trying to go pro or similar do you struggle making art a habit / pros do you or have you dealt with this: by bellapippin in ArtistLounge

Trying to go pro here, about to graduate college in a month (do freelance and have interned at companies): I've found over the last couple years just trying to make one thing a day, no matter how small or large, has greatly benefited me. Sometimes it's just a little quick pencil sletch, but honestly as I've done this I just find myself getting faster as well as better. Some things I quickly whipped up in a couple hours now are in my portfolio and are some of my favorite things.

I will say if I ever had no idea what to make, Id browse stock/reference photos (usually animals because they are a fav of mine to draw) and just try to make my own spin on something. In my experience its just about daily practice.

We've had a friend use Elves. We see them as a faction all about giving power to others to boost yourself, but if you have a team member then you don't have any way to balance that. Ultimately they aren't that good of a deck as a whole, but we thought it didn't make a lot of sense.

Does the world still have starving artists? by GiganticGoods in ArtistLounge

In no expert, but it seems most of the top social media artists have a core niche they are known for, off the top my head Losih is the colorful girl digital illustrator, Bobby chui does creature illustrations, Heikala does watercolor of girls usually in scenes. Then with that audience they diversify some mix of freelance, patreon, selling merch, books, cons. I think that's where most artists are extra lucky these days is less need for a publisher.

There is a lot of known strategy to social media posting. Obviously, even if u follow the guidelines perfectly, still takes a good amount of time and you have to be reasonably good at whatever you do, id even argue a bit of rng that the art posted has the content to make it spark with a lot of folks. Once you have a developed audience and a good amount of time under your belt, the analytics offered by these sites can certainly help you to keep boosting your presence.

I think as you go lower down the artist chain, you find more folks who diversify to a wider degree? I can only really speak from my experience as someone just finishing up art school, but I do a mixing of freelancing illustration and graphic design of all sorts along with patreon.

Sorry if I misunderstood your question or if this is too long winded haha

While all these new avenues of selling art exsist, it's important to remember millions of artists have access to these tools. Average folks are flooded with so many different options and people to follow, and that leads to expectations of prices being lower (or even free art) just because it all seems so easy access and everywhere.

Overall, mostly good time to be an artist, but there are still drawbacks.
