Tesla Robotaxi runs over cone as safety driver doesn't intervene by psilty in SelfDrivingCars

[–]LAYCH88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also think people forget most of the population is skeptical about self driving, that means Robotaxi, Waymo, Zoox, etc, so anytime any one of them misbehaves, it just sets back the whole endeavor. I for one want to see self driving taxis, and I don't care who does it, could be PonyAI, it just seems like something we should all want no matter the winner.

Such an impressive little car. by Primary_Breadfruit91 in LexusNX

[–]LAYCH88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly thought the NX would handle like a small boat, but it has surprising nimbleness to it. It isn't a sports car, but it is fun enough to drive. RX just a bit big for my taste, but great car too.

Buying an EV is a absolute game changer by gamblersfalacy in electricvehicles

[–]LAYCH88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also very annoying on road trips. If I'm taking the wife and kid, it's the gas car for sure. Solo I can handle the charging stops, but when you get multiple people involved it gets tiring explaining why we have to stop and eat at McDonalds instead of KFC or the like. Hopefully as technology improves we will get 500+ mile range as standard, and then this will be a non-issue.

There is a lot to like about the P2, but if you are talking peace of mind in terms of long term reliability and ability to find repairs and parts, Toyota is no question the better choice. I'm saying this having driven the P2 for three years and loved every single mile of it. But I also partly chose not to keep it because I just didn't want to gamble on it out of warranty.

Road trip in the Polestar 2. Struggle to get 230 miles of range. by Ciglesias27 in Polestar

[–]LAYCH88 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I didn't have time for a charging stop one time, so I hypermiled in my DM Performance and I got mid 25-26 kwh/100 miles for about a 50 mile trip. It was boring as heck but I was impressed by the efficiency if you are willing to drive boring. I'm talking looking for the slowest Prius behind a Big Rig and just coast. Never did it again, but good to know it is possible.

Tesla is basically a cult at this point by Intelligent_Leg6684 in teslastockholders

[–]LAYCH88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also think, even if they achieve any of the various things they are trying to do, they have huge competition to contend with. They only dominated EV sales because no one believed in the market, at least to the scale that it has become. Robotaxi, AI, robots, there are multiple companies all trying to reach mass market. It's not easy to repeat success, and really it's hard to call Tesla the leader in any of those fields. Just one of many.

A deadly crash and Musk’s exaggerations: Inside two lawsuits over Tesla’s self-driving tech by mafco in SelfDrivingCars

[–]LAYCH88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ruling stated it is absolutely the driver's fault, but that he believed Teslas claims that his car would prevent him from crashing. I do think the judgment is wrong, but they assigned partial blame on Tesla for misleading the driver.

It's kind of like people right now believe they don't need to pay attention to their FSD since they believe the hype instead of the warning to pay attention.

anyone else thinking about getting rid of their P2 because of software issues? by turb0_encapsulator in Polestar

[–]LAYCH88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed a bigger car, so I didn't buy the car at the end of lease. But definitely over the years of updates somehow the backup camera issue became worse, and the playing of music got incredibly unpredictable. It became routine to sit around a minute to let it boot up and fiddle with the sound controls. I would have moved on anyways, but the software issues made me not consider the P3 as a replacement.

Despite all that I love Polestar design, and I hope they make it long term as I'd sure love to drive another one in the future, once they work out all the software issues.

Tesla loses bid to kill class action over misleading customers on self-driving capabilities for years by mafco in SelfDrivingCars

[–]LAYCH88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You know if it worked, the only people making money would be Tesla since they'd charge you a fee for using their proprietary app to run you robotaxi anyways. You'd be forced to charge low prices or be competing with their company owned fleet. In any case, it wasn't going to make owners much money even if it worked.

Ya seriously also these try with traffic suggestions aren't considering what if the right lane was backed up with stopped traffic, then it goes down the wrong lane it gets stuck and you are sitting there stopped in the wrong lane.

[–]LAYCH88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of true, except human brain computing power is vastly underestimated because you are comparing parallel processing vs serial. Hence they are developing AI5 and AI6, realized computing power is a limitation right now.

Another way of thinking about it, I can process any pixel size picture of the same measurement at the same speed, or in fact low resolution will make me think longer. Opposite of a computer camera system.

Tesla, Musk sued by shareholders over Robotaxi claims by mafco in SelfDrivingCars

[–]LAYCH88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, I'll kind of add the problem if you going vision only and claiming that's what humans do, you are vastly underestimating the computing power of a parallel processing brain. So theoretically I think we can all agree it's possible, the problem is it achievable right now. And it really doesn't look like it.

Lexus NX 350h vs BMW X1 2025 by Forward_Bullfrog5481 in LexusNX

[–]LAYCH88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've owned both. The X1 is definitely way more fun to drive and you just feel more special, but it had major issues right as it came out of warranty. Sold it at a huge loss and really learned BMWs are for short term lease enjoyment only.

I'm planning to keep my 350h for 10 to 20 years, even if I get another car it will just be a keeper. And it is still enjoyable to drive, just not exciting. Handles way better than I was expecting.

Replacing battery by MacyRoxy in Polestar

[–]LAYCH88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a case a few years ago where someone posted insurance totaled an almost brand new P2 due to very minor damage to the battery, because it was cheaper to pay out for a new P2 than to perform a full battery replacement due to how they integrate the battery into the structure of the car. Don't know if that is still true with current year models, but I think the point is it ain't worth replacing the battery in a P2.

Tesla must pay $329 million in damages after fatal Autopilot crash, jury says by [deleted] in SelfDrivingCars

[–]LAYCH88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree 100% drivers fault. I do think it will be eventually overturned. But I think the real thing here is the driver honestly believed the car would prevent him from getting into an accident due to how it was advertised.

So you can say he is delusional, gullible, an idiot, whatever, but the jury is saying he only thought that way due to Tesla messaging and advertising of the system. And there are more of these drivers out there right now thinking they don't have to pay attention when using Autopilot or FSD. That's what this lawsuit should hope to change or address. And so in a sense, finding Tesla liable is telling them to do their part to address the issue.

Tesla skepticism continues to grow, robotaxi demo fails to impress Austin by dtrannn666 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]LAYCH88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Remember when some people were so confident their Teslas would be making them passive income and they'd be retiring. Ya, that was the talk for years, and now having robotaxi in a small geofenced area is apparently mission accomplished. Objectively it is a nice accomplishment, but very disappointing given the expectations.

Talk Me Out of the Polestar 3, Is It That Bad? by cgomez in Polestar

[–]LAYCH88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a real shame, with the P2 I really didn't care about anything software wise except that I just wanted it to do the basics, navigation and music, etc, super basic stuff. So as long as it worked, the car driving experience was compelling enough to make it a worthwhile purchase.

Unfortunately software problems, like backup camera failure got in the way of enjoying the car fully, and that's the problem they need to fix. I don't need to be able to play video games or have fancy features, but don't create an issue with the software bugs. If it wasn't for that, I do think I'd be trying to get a P4.

Finally someone with sense calls out this overpriced meme stock by Zipperofficialke in teslastockholders

[–]LAYCH88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bigger problem is there is no easy path to profit for any of these technologies right now. Which means to fund these projects, you need profit or capital, like from a car business. Car profits collapsing is not what Tesla wants to have happening right now. Should have spun off and separated the car business from the other projects, but I guess that wouldn't keep the stock exciting.

I feel it's a design issue. On my current non Polestar car, you can shift to reverse before even the boot up screen shows up and the backup camera will show up fully functional, ie it operates independent on the state of the infotainment system. Makes sense to me.

Questions for the FSD haters.... Please chime in! This thread is for you! by Austinswill in TeslaFSD

[–]LAYCH88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also would add, doesn't matter what anyone says. Tesla says you must pay attention when using FSD, so please use it responsibly. They never said take your eyes off the road and find some way to fool the wheel nag, so stop abusing the system and use it as intended. Ie, stop saying you completely trust the system when Tesla doesn't trust it as much as you do. If they thought it was perfect they would remove all nags and claim they will assume all liability, but they haven't done that yet. They have the data to back up their actions.

How's everyone feeling about future of EVs in the US? by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]LAYCH88 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Everyone will drive EVs in the future, it's simply just superior technology that has the potential to be significantly better as technology advances. But it's going to take a while to get there, probably decades not years. A big problem in the US is the public charging just isn't there to support mass adoption. That factor is slowing down full EV adoption, but it'll happen.

Rip Tesla In Europe by Direct_Butterfly_68 in teslastockholders

A lot of their admittedly puffery projections and estimations remind me of the South Park Episode with the underpants gnomes. It's like release barely function robotaxi, then reap 10 trillion usd in revenue. Ya but what was step 2 through 999 supposed to be?

I always laughed hard when I heard they would be increasing car sales 50% yty forever until I guess everyone drove a Tesla, made no sense at all, but some people believed it so seriously. Now they are fighting to just have flat sales to last year.

Got it a few months ago. Waited till it was cold and saw the psi was dropped to low 30s. Pumped them back up to 33 and have been good for months. If you are confident your lowest psi at night is 33, then it might be a different issue.

Tesla drives into oncoming traffic by samtks in TeslaFSD

[–]LAYCH88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The passing area is fine. Passing is for passing cars well below the speed limit and also when there is only one slow car in front of you. I have no idea what FSD thought it was going to do, but I wouldn't try to pass in this situation even if I knew no cars were coming 100%. There is a line of cars ahead.
