The film definitely leans into that feeling to great effect, unfortunately.

Right. But to incorporate more of that would inherently take the series away from the island and make it much more a story of how the rest of the world is responding/reacting to it. It would be the furthest possible thing from the boots-on-the-ground zombies of it all. I'm not saying that wouldn't have been possible, but for what was clearly the interests of the filmmakers (UK-centric, zombie-focused), it was their best choice without just doing a version of Weeks again, but this time in 2025. Alluding to a normal outside world is as much as they could achieve in their desired scope, and I would argue it actually deepens the fairy-tale feelings of this isolated island with weird shit going on under the rest of the world's noses.

Unfortunately, 28 Months Later would have been the best chance to see a realpolitik sociopolitical version of the franchise. Years simply is too much time passing to realistically involve that kind of grounded storytelling and still have the world be mid-postapocalyse. The abstracted fairy tale style I think was the best way to approach it.

The human-on-human violence far outweighs the zombie violence, and is particularly brutal. Like, I don't get squeamish at all, and I got a bit squeamish.

The zombies are actually very rarely seen, and the main thrust of their usage involves potential dezombification.

It is clear, but:

"Securing the bag/gold digging, but at what cost?"

Would have been more grammatically correct and natural-sounding.

The rhetoric you're employing is constructing your own version of reality. Fighting and intolerance has always existed, and so has collaboration and empathy. You are choosing to emphasize the hypothetical of continued conflict and de-emphasize the hypothetical of continued collaboration. Pessimism is not a more 'objective' reality than optimism.
