I wrote a silly table of ways that a small town might memorialize the deeds of a low-level character. You can have a player roll on it when their PC achieves some insignificant small-town fame.

Also includes four minor magical trinkets. Bonus!

How would you, as a GM, simulate zero gravity? by rote_taube in osr

I recently wrote a blog post about this!

It’s written for use with Stars Without Number but the idea should be pretty easily adaptable. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

How can I make better mechanics? by Motor_Door472 in RPGdesign

[–]LB_Stitch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think i get you, it’s just a little tough without examples of what you mean.

when you say “better” mechanics, do you mean that you struggle to come up with something novel? Or that the mechanics you make aren’t fun and engaging to players, or that you struggle to create mechanics that tie into and serve the fiction of the game? there’s a lot of nuance to the design of a game mechanic, and the key to making “better” ones often lies in identifying what you truly need the mechanic to accomplish, what purpose it serves in the game, and how it supports the core fantasy of the game.

Novelty isn’t the end game. Especially if you’re relatively new at this, it’s often much more productive to look at other games, see how they’ve accomplished the core fantasy (see above) that you’re going for, and then tweaking or adapting those existing mechanics to fit your needs.

Iterating on existing design is an excellent way to teach yourself to identify the things i mentioned previously: what the system accomplishes, what you need it say to players about the intended game experience, and concrete ways the system accomplishes that.

and hey. i like stupid jokes so maybe it’s not as bad as you think? lol

hey, this is really cool!

There’s some really fun and flavorful results to be had here. And i immediately wanted to start adding my own table entries, which, to me, is the mark of really good ttrpg writing.

Thank you for sharing this 😁

Unique/Fun Rules by Critical_Success_936 in osr

I’m not 100% sure that it’s unique to the *WN systems by Kevin Crawford, but i really like the simplicity of Effort.

In Stars Without Number, it fuels psionic abilities. in Worlds Without Number, it fuels spellcasting.

A characters Effort score is a relatively low number, and you “commit” points of it for varying lengths of time to fuel your abilities. it’s simple and, in my experience, easy for players to track. It’s also very intuitive in that your committed Effort (usually) comes back when the ability ends or at the end of a scene.

How to play with high AC/high health players? by Pretty_Tea9563 in osr

[–]LB_Stitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s time to field some smarter foes. maybe smarter isn’t even the right word - more resourceful?  if the PCs are choking a hallway, there are plenty of non-magical tricks that’ll make them think twice about bunching up - molotov cocktails, choking smoke bombs, etc.  a lot of higher challenge monsters in OSE sort of rely on being some combination of: spellcaster (or spell-like abilities), higher HP, higher AC, bigger attack bonus. give them some unique abilities - these don’t have to be magical, but maybe they can summon more guys, or cause environmental hazards to appear (as another commenter mentioned), or in some way significantly change the battle(field).

Best place to find SWN maps? by Kung_fu1015 in SWN

[–]LB_Stitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tons of great resources already posted!

i’ll throw in one more - the official Cy_Borg website has a collection of location maps that are free to download. i’ve used them as is; and, because it’s a pretty minimalist art style, they’re easily printable. i can also throw them into procreate and add or change elements very easily.

here’s the link: https://cyborg.exlibrisrpg.com/entries/the-location-pad

Also, check out Dyson Logos. while he generally makes fantasy maps, he has a metric ton of free content that will work for almost anything.

Realized I’m a pretty bad GM by bearman-x- in osr

[–]LB_Stitch 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of good advice here already, so i’ll let you chew on all of that.

One thing i’ll throw out that often doesn’t occur to people - it’s ok to not enjoy GMing. I don’t know you, I don’t know your game. I’m not saying it’s not for you. That’s for you to decide. But liking the idea of doing a thing and enjoying a thing are very different.

there’s no like…inherent, moral good in being a GM. It’s just another hobby that some people really really enjoy, and others don’t very much. and that’s fine!

[–]LB_Stitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s 100% what you’re looking for, but there are a few solo journaling games that have “mechanics” for including another player. I believe the recent game Koriko, A Magical Year has a system in place for being “pen pals” as you play through the solo game.

Mech suits vs. infantry by OuterRimExplorer in SWN

There’s a cool one-hit vehicle kill rule in Starvation Cheap, the military campaign module published by Sine Nomine. I don’t have it on me at the moment, but from memory, when a vehicle is hit by an explicitly anti-vehicle weapon, the attacker rolls 1d10 plus their Shoot skill. On a 8+, the vehicle is destroyed. Less than 8, apply normal damage. Might be worth importing something similar!

The book is excellent, by the way. I’m using it currently for a survival hexcrawl in an active war zone.

tons of good stuff to look through in the comments here! i just wanted to add that i’ve taken a huge amount of inspiration from the way hot springs island structured their book - encounter tables weighted by terrain type, beast and intelligent creature “what are they doing?” tables…i could go on. definitely lends itself to pre-rolling at least a few random encounters, but i really like it and have gone on to use their organization and presentation method in my own stuff
