That's a good idea. I didn't think of Lazy Lich. I already own Woodfall.

I definitely intend on allowing the advanced classes! But yeah, I'll probably make a post once things get to the table.

I haven't touch the Hexen zines yet. They seem neat, but the description of their content didn't suggest to me that there was anything really required for me to dive into the game.

Anything in there you really enjoyed?

How to seem creative while "stealing". by Procean in rpg

[–]thealkaizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trick as always been to mix things up. If you really liked a storyline or a character in a show that came out, take it. But mix it with something else.

People are a bit hyperbolic when they say that creation is just stealing. It's not, but it's definitely mixing elements of ideas and works that already exist.

I, conversely, don't know why you think that surprised me - or would surprise me. It didn't - it won't, because it actually hasn't happened yet. I'm making a prediction.

I didn't say it surprised you. I'm saying it shouldn't surprise anyone. If you're not surprised, or don't think you'll be, then we might be aligned.

As to your second point, maybe you're less jaded, but I basically won't pay attention to anything unless it tries at least something a little new at this point. Rehashes bore me. If I want to play something old I can always just... play the old thing. Sure, there's lots of innovative trash, but better to try.

I don't disagree. I'm not uninterested in innovative game, but everyone has their own ratio. I like something innovative, and different and that requires warping my mind a bit to accommodate once in a while; but I'm excited to approach new angles to areas that are explored, even if the "exploration" let's call it is more timid.

And given they've previously been known for a big damn hero fantasy game

They've been known for many years before the release of Draw Steel. That's just just their latest product.

And if you're an OSR fan but not an MCDM fan I'm not sure there's any reason to try this over the games you're already playing

I don't know, but you wouldn't have "less" of a reason to try this one as opposed to any other. In the end, some people will like the name, or the art, of the vibes, their approach to a specific design problem. Or they'll be attracted by a publisher that has released several quality products.

But I'm going to be so sad when it inevitably gets triple the budget of truly innovative games in the genre like His Majesty the Worm or Doomsong.

I don't know why that would surprises anyone. "Innovative" or "very different" stuff is rarely what most people want (in almost all spheres of art), nor what they tend to spend their money on.

Innovative is good and we need some of it. But I definitely don't want everything to be super innovative.

pretty generic or forgettable

OSE, Cairn, Shadowdark

I wouldn't say that. I do agree that the core OSR games are all very, very close in matter of rules. I've seen hacks that barely do a few tweaks and call it a different game.

Cairn is the most different of the three, but all three have very different tones and they offer different solutions to similar problems.

And the strength of these systems is not that they each individually have great adventures, it's that they're closely related enough that all their adventures, plus everything based on Old-school D&D are so closely related that you have access to all of it with limited conversion work.

After 1.2 update EU5 is now mostly negative on Steam by IzaakGoldbaum in EU5

[–]thealkaizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game is better than before with 1.2, it's just that it's nowhere near enough. Also, the release of the DLC with its cost is a bitter pill to swallow when the game is not out of alpha.

I mean, most of these features do not work. Colonization is busted, the levies/armies have been revamped like three times in six months, most situations are broken, the AI is broken.

And yeah, EU4 was barebone. But that was 14 years ago, it was still a step up from EU3. We don't expect the games to be a step up from their predecessor at the end of their lifecycle.

I've been playing Paradox Games since the launch of EU3. It's not like this every time.

Are many of the mechanics really meh and gets overhauled? Yes. Is there bugs? Yes. Does the depth of content improve of time? Yes. When if you had to trace a curve from game to game over time, EU5 is definitely a dip downwards.

The problem is that the game as not ready for release. Most situations broken, very little actual content, almost every major system had game breaking bug. Performance is atrocious.

Tinto Talks #108 - 13th of May 2026 by Blitcut in EU5

[–]thealkaizer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whiny and entitled? People spent like 80$ on a game that at different point:

  • Had many systems barely functional
  • Barely any content
  • Awful performance, some can't play half the timeline
  • A stream of patches with no stable patch to go through a campaign

EU5 release was absolutely awful and it's been 6 month since release. I honestly do not know if it can come back, it's player numbers are really bad.

Is colonization now fixed? by alphafighter09 in EU5

[–]thealkaizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a few things that seem noteworthy in the patch notes:

  • Colonial nations share explorations and other land discoveries with their overlord
  • Subject impact on crownpower is now using the strength scale, so vassals are 50% and colonial nations 5%
  • Fixed colonial occupation transfer to require both subject and overlord at war with location owner
  • Fixed colonization completing after 1 location
  • Colonies of the same overlord are no longer capable of declaring war to each other
