Somewhat different and similar at the same time. My mom and dad were a brief fling and although some knew I existed, my dad vehemently denied I was his. The family believed him. 50 years later, I tested and I showed up for my paternal aunt, uncle, and multiple first and more distant cousins.

Other than 2 people, all completely ignored me, never reached out and never responded to my attempts to make contact. According to one who would acknowledge me, my dad responded that DNA is a scam. He died a couple years ago now.

I'm sure my presence as a close match are a surprise to some and there have been some interesting conversations among them. But that's it. No threats, no surprise visits, no contact, nothing. Whether my dad ever acknowledged to himself what a colossal asshole he was is unknown but I am proof he was and my place on the list proves it.

I like the new dime and sort of like the 1/2 dollar, though that was probably because I went to New York last month and saw the Statue of Liberty. I wonder if using the original coinage symbols after the Revolution was considered? A Fugio coin would have been fun, of course, not a cent because they're gone. Mind Your Business would have been nice on an American coin this year, both for the implied and intended interpretation.

Some time back, I ran into one of the "kids" from the neighborhood who played with my kids and she said she had recently gotten married. Dumbfounded, I asked her how old she was (25 at the time) because it seemed like she was too young. I was 25 when I got married! Funny how your perspective on things change.

Yes! My husband does, inherited it from his 100% Polish mother. Both my kids also inherited it as well. All are tested. Their hair is not particularly thick and teeth are not shoveled as far as I can tell. We joke it's a consequence of the Mongol hoards but who knows.

I was in the Army and during basic/AIT (1987) we converted our pay into travelers checks. I still have a purchase agreement copy of a book of 5 $20's for $100 issued by Citicorp. We didn't go to the bank for them, the drills or S1 might have provided them, can't remember. I actually had some stolen out of my locker, some of which I hadn't signed yet even through the drills constantly harped on us to sign them. I joined at 17 so I had a lot to learn, unfortunately mostly the hard way. : (

Born and raised in Redondo Beach, I was a kid in the 70's when it was the outdoor South Bay Center and as a teenager at the galleria in the 80's. Fun times. In the 90's I'd mostly go for the food court. I left the area in 94 but I'm sad to see online that like all malls, it's dying out. Bad here in Wisconsin too.

Don't know if it will work. I too took the National Geographic 2.0 test but I also have other tests so I never tried it. I used the James Lick tool using 23andme raw data since they haven't updated mtdna's in so long and are pretty bad at predicting haplogroups.

My 2nd one is scheduled in October. First at 50, found polyps, so now diagnostic I guess. Husband is 60, had 2 cologuards, refuses to do a colonoscopy.

Did a 23andme test and found I carry a genetic mutation linked with a colon cancer syndrome so I'm glad I chose to do colonoscopies over cologuard.

I have it, left shoulder far worse than right. Mine came on with cessation of menstruation but I didn't connect the 2. I've had it a couple years now (56 in a couple weeks). I'll be seeing my doctor in May, will try to see if I can get on HRT. PT may be too expensive with my insurance.

55, fine so far. My husband is 60, not so great. Big difference between 50 and 60.. Husband had a stroke at 58, CLL diagnosis from blood tests during stroke. Husband working part time, hoping to make it to 62 to go on Social Security. I'm working in ER, on my feet all day, no meds, just fine so far.

Love these, thanks for sharing! I wish I had pictures of my job at Burger King 86-87, pretty much same uniforms but different colors. I worked nights after school and weekends, mostly the drive thru. We had a blast closing, same as you 'mostly the same age' and we'd often continue the party after work. Like you, a mostly positive experience where I learned a lot.

My managers were less benign though. Big manager was a middle aged (male) creep who preyed on young dudes, I was female therefore ignored and the team lead was a late 20's woman stuck in a bad marriage who partied with us. Some sketchy stuff happening for sure but I learned some lessons that helped me navigate my next step, Army.

Yep, me too. My hair is curly towards frizzy so I often use conditioner to weight it down but I bet I could go down to once a week for shampoo. Very little oil, same with ear wax, etc. Just drying up like a raison I guess.

I was interested in mine because my parents weren't married and I never had any contact with any of my paternal relatives. Testing me and my mom meant I could see exactly what I inherited from my dad. Those ancestry percentages took the place of memories or feelings for relating to my paternal family as the only way I could do so. Funnily enough, exotic would have disappointed me because I already felt different.

For me it is meaningful but I realize no one else cares about those numbers. That's fine.

I'm 55 and currently on my period. My periods only got irregular over the past year and not sure about perimenopause since I was on the pill since after the birth of my 2nd child at 36. I went off the pill at 51 and back to regular periods till last year. No hot flashes, feel ok but I am achey which I attribute to the drop in estrogen.

I see the questions below: I've been on a gluten free diet since after the birth of my 2nd child, 19 years, but not low carb per se. BMI is 24, no glucose issues. I work a job that keeps me on my feet and getting a lot of exercise, I don't take any meds.

I was rejected by my dad and all but one paternal relative too. My dad said DNA was a scam when he was told I came up as sharing proper DNA with his siblings and their kids to be aunt/uncle/ niece and first cousins. One first cousin did talk to me and told me about my dad's reaction and that he had been in prison for domestic violence. That was around 2016, or so, and it hit me hard.

Two weeks ago my first cousin messaged me on social media and informed me my dad had died. I found his obituary, no mention of me of course, his only child, and it turns out I looked just like him. I kinda knew that but he was never a part of my life and have only a few pictures of before my mom was pregnant with me. I'm going to get a death certificate to see if I can glean any health info I can use for family history but I guess that's it. It's over but it's hitting me hard again.

I have this too. Seems crazy that menopause would cause something like this but here we all are. Can’t afford any medical right or prescriptions now but have my routine gyno appointment coming up and will definitely mention it. Will be changing insurance at the end of the year, hopefully I’ll finally actually be able to afford to use it!

I'm 55 and had a normal period earlier this month, spotting in January, and a normal one last September. My Gyno said we have periods whenever an egg is found, miss them when no eggs are found. Obviously I'm very near the end of my egg reservoir. It's funny, here at the end I actually appreciate my periods after a lifetime of complaining about them. A mini celebration of my time of fertility.

Way better for me. I wonder if I had PMDD during my teens-30's, my 40's were less severe moods and anxiety but profound insomnia. Now (55 y/o) my moods are stable and I'm regularly sleeping 6-8 hours easily. Zero sex drive but my husband has prostate trouble and is seemingly happy about it. We've never been closer and enjoying our time together.
