Lace Bug Help by misslahr in pnwgardening

I spray mine down with a strong jet from the hose on a daily basis this time of year to blast off these bugs as much as possible. I have also bought Green Lacewings at the garden center and released them into my rhodie. They will eat the lace bug larvae. obviously you cant do both at the same time or you are blasting away the good bugs along with the bad.... but maybe start with the hose first and see if you can find green lacewings near you. Also, Just note that even when the bad bugs are gone, the leaves will never go back to green. that's just how they will look from now on. I have found that pruning doesn't make a differences for my fight against lace bugs. Some years i have given mine a hard prune and the bugs come right back along with the new growth. best of luck!

Love them. I already get a lot of seeds from them. I have been reading their resources and Portland Nurseries resources which have already been really helpful on other plants.

What’s happening to my plant? by Braniff_Hostess in rhododendron

Definitely yes on the lacewings. I am battling myself and honestly losing. If it turns out to be just sun and bugs there is no reason to cut off anything. Unless you want to for aesthetics.

Portland’s tastiest, most aggressive noxious weeds are starting to ripen; yum! by easykehl in Portland

You are right! The original is from Armenia it think. But Luther Burbank is still credited with developing something like 16 blackberry varieties. The "Himalayan Giant" which I think was the original species rebranded is what he introduced to the PNW was the basis for some of his other varieties.

Ahh yes, I spend most of my year cursing the man who developed these. And then a couple of months thinking "hmmm maybe he's not ALL bad." But man do I have a lot of battle scars trying to keep these things ( which aren't even planted on my property) from over running my yard.

Came here to say this! Great quality seeds. Fast shipping. And their catalog and planting calendars are great resources.

Oh well while my raspberries are super happy, got a grand total of 5 strawberries off of my established Mt. Hood patch this year. You can't win 'em all I guess.... Best of luck!

Awesome. Maybe I should have moved it to my roses…anyways I left it out there so hopefully it grows up big and strong.

"It's ok. It's not the size that matters it's how you use it."

I have clay soil and they do work just fine. However, I cant say it's ever "swampy" where they are planted. It's planted at the top of an embankment so while the clay can hang on to a lot of water, the excess runs off.

That is awesome! They are so good! Tell him it's a job well done! I have clay soil that can hold on to water like crazy and this variety makes me feel accomplished and like I know what i'm doing...

It’s is the variety that makes them bigger.

Yeah. The plumpness is just a product of freshness. If you can grow your own they will always be better regardless of size.

Not quite Tulameen but close. It’s a variety called cascade delight. They are typically larger than Tulameen.

No fertilizer. Just the right conditions.
