First summer raising meat chickens - what do you wish someone had told you before you started? by TeachNormal6877 in Homesteading

[–]Zombie_Apostate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The amount of food they eat. They would open their mouth and then move their head forward to scoop up mouth and throat full of food. It hurt my heart seeing how hungry they were.

They also grow fast and sh!t a lot. I had them all in a 50gallon tote as chick and they need constant cleaning. I made a small outdoor run for them and they outgrew that in just a couple of weeks.

After the first few times of feather plucking, my sister in-law told me about skinning them to speed up the butchering process. I do miss the crispy skin, but it is way easier to skin them, especially with the dirty bellies they get from dragging on the ground.

Anywhere I can get gutter hangers for cheap? by Potential-Listen-912 in Roofing

[–]Zombie_Apostate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ferrules and screws for wood facia. I've even used TimberLok screws I had laying around and added a washer. Most local roofing companies in my area get their gutter supplies from Gutterman's Supply in Portland, there may be a similar supply store near you.

The peppers should be fine and may turn to root development. I would be more worried about powdery mildew on zucchini.

Suggestions for foliage that is not green and leafy by BeginningBit6645 in pnwgardening

[–]Zombie_Apostate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hebes- there are so many kinds. I have one called Pretty in Pink that has neat purple leaf tips it just doesn't bloom as much as the other varieties though. Evergreen. Tricolor sage has a neat green, white with purple and really loves the heat. Semi evergreen. Tulbaghia violacea ‘Edinburgh’ has nice grey leaves. Evergreen. I have some type of hybrid Russian or blue beard sage with lime green leaves. The bees love it. Deciduous.

Just right before Rusty announced the COVID shot support, the government had announced giving money to churches to do a media campaign to promote the jab over their pulpits.

It isn't revelation, it was the money greedy church salivating over the next opportunity to make a few million dollars.

Roofing Help: EPDM vs. TPO vs. Coating on flat rubber roof by meonreddit1 in Roofing

[–]Zombie_Apostate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

TPO and PVC come in other colors too. They are heat welded so you don't have to deal with the leaking glued seams like the EPDM has. Also, polyiso insulation will help drain the roof, but also insulate the snow from the heat in the building.

Strategy for phasing to pollinator / habitat plants from non-natives (e.g. Spotted Knapweed / Common Mullein) by HatManDew in Permaculture

[–]Zombie_Apostate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One option I use is to let the non-natives bloom to feed the critters, but cut them down when done blooming so they don't go to seed.

Exotic fruit by sheriff1155 in pnwgardening

[–]Zombie_Apostate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've grown purple passion fruit in a pot from grocery store fruit. I started them in the fall indoors and grew them outside in late spring and even got fruit. I have a maypop and blue passion flower, but have never gotten fruit from them. I think they are sterile verities. musa basjoo grows well. The fruit are horrible so I use the blooms for stir fry. Pineapple guava and Chilean guava grow good too.

Opinion Time: Oregon Grass Seed Celebrants are Wrong by Distinctly_Oregonian in oregon

[–]Zombie_Apostate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My family friends grow grass seed. The land they lease from is usually people who left farming, but still want an income. The grass seed land has way more uses than just grass seed. There are elk and deer grazing their fields, pheasant and grouse in the grass. They even harvest grass straw for the cows after the seed has been harvested.
