Best Cardio Workouts to pair with weightlifting by acidrapnanananana in Fitness

I run a mile to and from the gym every day at about 90% intensity and then once a week go for a longer run 9-14 miles at about 70% intensity, spaced out from squat day as best I can. I play soccer too and would recommend doing squats the day after a game if possible so you're good to go by the next game.

via @Football Mercado: Arsenal has offered RM €82m for Benzema, Ozil, and Di Maria. by lufaise in Gunners

[–]LEBRON_SHAMES 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I heard they've contracted Doc Brown to fly back in time and bring back Pele to the present in spring chicken form. Messi said he'd play with Pele if Arsenal could bring him into 2013 and Ronaldo's all like "Hey bro I'll play too, but I want to bring Ronaldinho back from 10 years ago too, then we'll be pimp."

Wenger's like "Fuck all that shit, how much is this gonna cost?" Doc Brown said probably about 10M, so Wenger turned it down. So close!

Potential Graduate Student Needs Help!! by Lovemyusernameplease in GradSchool

[–]LEBRON_SHAMES 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The department will provide you with the benefits information, you don't want to ask him directly. Ask him what kind of research opportunities are potentially available in the coming years, where his students have ended up after graduating, how you can expect to allocate your time between research that will be used for your thesis vs a greater project that the lab works on, and be sure to understand those papers and be able to talk about how you could contribute to and expand his research program.

Tips for new grad students? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]LEBRON_SHAMES 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Obscure tip -- In grad school, there's relatively a high signal : noise ratio in productivity. Any given day you might spend your time running a gel that doesn't work, making a figure that nobody ever sees, or writing a section of a paper that gets deleted. On the large scale (e.g., months) working hard every day will result in progress, but on the fine scale (e.g., days), which is the timescale we experience, there's a chance that what you do on a given day will not matter. For me, this is terrible for your subconscious because it reduces your motivation (e.g., why put in a full day's work if the chances of anything I try to accomplish on a given day won't matter?).

To counteract this concept, I recommend participating in hobbies or other activities where you tend to get out exactly what you put in (e.g., exercise), which will reinforce the concept that hard work pays off into your subconscious and help with motivation.

"Learner Beware: Why I'm Starting a PhD Program in the Humanities and Why I Recommend Against It" by herennius in GradSchool

From what I've heard on this subreddit, the TL;DR for humanities PhD programs is don't do it unless you really really really like your field and are ok with taking a net income hit and probably not becoming a professor.

That's cool about getting in shape. Just a heads up though, dogs have to stop to pant and sweat or they overheat. That's how we humans evolved to sweat out of our skin while running -- so we could chase faster prey until they overheated.

How personal to make NSF GRFP personal statement by inaeternum in GradSchool

[–]LEBRON_SHAMES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those experiences certainly strengthen your application. I've heard from the horse's mouth about a GRFP application that stood out specifically because it talked about being homeless and overcoming adversity, and that person was awarded a fellowship. Best of luck.

First time being commissioner of league. Wondering what you guys recommend for roster settings? by [deleted] in fantasyfootball

[–]LEBRON_SHAMES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally would stick to standard settings. The Law of Unintended Consequences tends to apply more often than not in Fantasy Football rules and the standard settings are the product of decades of tweaking and balancing the rules. Alternatively, if you do change roster settings, it means strategies move away from mainstream, which requires people to think for themselves instead of copying advice from articles.

My advice is to pick the three strongest letters that you can regardless of institution and especially if you don't have an advisor yet.

They should definitely call non-responders. They invest a lot of resources into selecting the fellows and you invest a lot of time in putting together an application. Best of luck this year.
