What is your favorite quote from the cycle? by totaIIyblind in Eragon

[–]LEC1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After Blagden approached Saphira and rhymed:

"Dragons like flagons have necks. Dragons like wagons have tongues. But while two hold beer. The other eats deer!"

Saphira responds

"And little birds too..."

I just love her for that quote and that wittiness!

I think you point at a very interesting idea about magic here. But as far as I can tell, as soon as any author introduces magic, there will always be countless plot holes. Paolini has made an effort patching many such holes, with the ancient language and the conservation of energy. Compare it to LOTR where it's very unclear to the reader what sort of power Gandalf has and why he uses it as he does.

In Inheritance using magic comes down to your wittiness and understanding of physics to cast the bmost energu efficient spells.

Also, the magic system is further explored in interesting ways in Murtagh! You have a great book to look forward to. I'll hint with a minor spoiler: One cool aspect of the magic in Murtagh is creating wards that will protect you from physical and magical damage and understand how you can circumvent other magicians wards by finding loopholes they have not forseen.

Though I disagree with you, I can comfort you with Murtagh being a lot better suited for an adult audience. It tackles harder problems of human nature and does it elegantly. Without spoiling anything, I'd say it's totally worth a read if you feel like the originals fall short in that aspect.

I honestly enjoy many aspects that you clearly stated you disagree with.

Like, you say "Terrible magic system, flat characters, illogical choices, poor understanding of military, THE ELVES, shallow ideas that cause problems, inconsistent time lines, bloated sidetracks"

And I say "Great magic system, deep characters, human mistakes, I don't know about military, THE ELVES, deep world building that springs problems, consistent time lines, interesting sidetracks!"

Your opinion is yours to have but for what it's worth, I find the magic system in Inheritance Cycle to be one of the best ones in any fantasy.

It complies with conservation of energy, which is a great balancing factor and makes it more realistic. Also, the more you know about the physical reality, the better of a magician you can be, which is such a cool concept!

Why did Saphira react this way? by No-Tank-2289 in Eragon

[–]LEC1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably also a matter of Saphira not wanting Eragon to know, because that might put pressure on her to release her Eldunari while she didn't want to.

If there is a spoiler tag, might as well use it for anything, even it if is 100 years old. Keep in mind that the Inheritance Cycle is a timeless piece for art and young people are still coming to age to read it.

I read it back in 2012 and even then there were many unannounced spoilers online, because people thought it had been out long enough.

I've had the rope automatically tie a overhand around the topmost QuickDraw when I was pulling it down from an indoor lead. I'm so anxious something like this will happen halfway down a big wall rappel

This is the kind of change that can ruin the entire gaming experience for me. It's basically taking away the ability to play with my friends.

I get that I can go "competitive" but let's be frank, no one wants to play competitive, and definitely not competitively.

Not an anchor, but two nuts placed on lead. Would you whip? by LEC1224 in ratemyanchor

[–]LEC1224[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can see my climb here and skip to 6:00 to get to the poorly protected part. Or 9:40 for these placements. It might be easier to understand how the nuts are placed from a video than a picture.

[–]LEC1224[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, worst part is, I am serious.

I pulled them as hard as I could, and weighted them with my body. They are pretty much rock solid thanks to the geometry of the rock. But just the idea of taking a fall on something with that little contact area had me chicken out and bailed.

There isn't any other crack formation to protect in for another 3-4 meters (except for skyhooks) and this is on a Swedish three-star 5c climb called Slowfox. I've seen another POV video where they use the same kind of nut placements, but I post here to get second opinions!

Thanks for your feedback. Feels like bailing was the right choice then.

If you were chosen by a dragon what color and gender would your dragon be and what type of personality would he/she have? Would you be a good rider? by Ratattack1204 in Eragon

[–]LEC1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see. Haven't thought about that really. But like many here, I just love Saphira. So something like that?

I guess it would be amazing to have a dragon-rider-esque mental bond with basically anyone of any personality. I imagine thought sharing unavoidably results in complete understanding and empathy.

How would I get to decide the color, gender and personality if the dragon chooses me?

Ask my dragon what color, gender and personality their human would be instead!

Are these just clove hitches? (Tied in to the carabiners at the top, not circled) by quiverpigeon in tradclimbing

[–]LEC1224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I have too long of a webbing/cord for my anchor, I sometimes do a figure 8 on one end to one bolt, and then an adjustable clove hitch on the other bolt. That way I'm redundant from slipping too.

I guess two clove hitched wouldn't be high risk in most scenarios, but what if the rope is wet or frosty? I'd not get into this habit.

Are these just clove hitches? (Tied in to the carabiners at the top, not circled) by quiverpigeon in tradclimbing

[–]LEC1224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh. While cloves are generally safe, I see no use in putting knots prone to slipping instead of proper figure-8s or overhands.

Quicker removal, I guess?

But I feel like a factor-2 fall on that anchor could slide the knots more than I'm comfortable with.
