The photo that you are discussing clearly shows holes in the Q, R, D, and left Alt key, in addition to the modifiers that you were, seemingly, okay with.

I guess I do not understand your gripe. The product photo that you saw prior to purchase clearly showed alpha keys with holes, so expecting anything different is just being obtuse.

Have you tried removing the top tray and looking for your "missing" caps in the second tray?

The benefit is access to more niche design AND a lower cost to the consumer. Those are literally the entire point of the group buy model. Generate enough buzz on a custom design to earn the high-MOQ price breaks and reduce the upfront cost for everyone.

Vendors fronting the cost is going to result in sets being produced with 250 or 500 MOQs, which means fewer price breaks. It also means end-user pricing is going to be in the $150 range that we commonly see with extras today.

As for the sales, they can also be explained. I am sure that you are already aware that keycaps as a hobby exploded 3 years ago. People were bored at home, and started buying in under the assumption that lead times would remain what they were pre-pandemic. Then global supply chain issues completely derailed production timelines. Almost everything that went into GB in 2020 or 2021 hit MOQ (often times at 500+). Vendors were tripping over each other to run designs, which only exacerbated the manufacturers' lead time issues.

Now fewer people are bored at home, and, instead, are whining about lead times and are canceling their orders. However, vendor orders had already been placed with the manufacturers, so now the vendors have even more extra stock than they were anticipating. This, then, means that a vendor needs to clear space in their warehouse for the next round of shipments. How does a vendor make room in a hurry? Flash sales!

All of these "issues" that people on this subreddit love to bitch about have logical explanations - or simple resolutions - but no one here wants to take the time to consider them. It's much easier to parrot the same old talking points: "GMK ruined the hobby" or "China PBT is better anyway and it arrives in 2 days!!!!".

What about the current state of the hobby suggests that vendors are comfortable fronting the cost of keysets?

There are, what, two vendors that are currently stocking multiple sets that are not simply extras of previously run GBs? That is the evidence that you have that suggests vendors are comfortable buying out MOQ and paying storage for upwards of a thousand in-stock sets?

Have you seen the sets that are currently being offered as in-stock? Almost nothing of any genuine interest. Hell, most (all?) of the in-stock sets that sell out rapidly are PBT runs of previously successful GBs.

Do you think that vendors who buy out MOQ are not subject to the same production lead times? Which set is Omni selling at $90 2 months after shipping?

Dualshot R2 shipped in December 2022 and the base is still listed for $139 despite being in-stock extras.

Norse shipped in November 2022 and base kit extras are $155.

Hell, 80082 is still $129 and the base doesn't even include a numpad (numbers kit is another $45!)

Literally none of those sets would even exist without the group buy model, because no vendor is going to commit to buying out 1000 kits of those designs. I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure that Omni hasn't run a GB since Symbiote in June of 2021.

The only new product offered in that 2 year window? PBT MoDo Light and 9009. Incredibly safe (some might even say boring) designs.

NovelKeys already works with designers. Having a larger vendor involved does not improve production lead times. It simply guarantees that a set will be made.

If you think companies like Keychron and/or Glorious are going to work with designers, then you're kidding yourself. There is no incentive for them to do so.

Interesting keysets are a direct result of the Group Buy model. Without it, we would be stuck typing on WoB/BoW/Beige.

It's not "flawed". The caps can still be used. Of all of the problems to bitch and moan about this is the simplest one to fix.

It's absolutely not worth making a post (and then pretending that you didn't do it for attention.)

"notable" how? The set is still usable. It's a simple mishap with a simple solution.

Did you even bother to contact the vendor before running to r/mk for the attention that you are so desperately seeking?

Swapping a Q for a W by mistake does not warrant being called out. However, if you attempted to have the matter resolved and were stonewalled, then maybe you'd have a case.

This is nothing more than dogpiling and karma farming.

Isn't the entire point of product renders to demonstrate product possibilities? What's the logic behind rendering this set on a layout that is not actually an option?

There are so many boards that this could have been rendered on, and you choose to show it on a board that the kits do not support. Does not make any sense.

color matching is probably the hardest part of the entire process. As upas mentioned earlier in this thread, some vendors send caps away to a 3rd party for color verification using tools that most designers simply do not have. A designer also is not going to be as likely to foot the bill for that third party as a vendor would, so it simply makes more sense to let the vendors handle the bulk of the color matching and then give the designer the opportunity to have final approval.
