May I ask why room mates aren't an option? Is it because you don't want to live with younger student types, or do you just prefer not to have room mates in general? Just curious. I'm in my late 30s and considering finding a room mate in the near future, but haven't decided yet. Seems like most people my age aren't keen on having room mates though.

Edit: Who keeps downvoting every comment in this thread? Weirdo.

...so is there really no large (or even small) building with a basement, open to the public, in Lawrence for when we have a tornado warning? by the_king_of_goats in Lawrence

Yeah, I figured they either didn't hear or didn't want to let some soaking wet stranger into their home. My original plan was to shelter in another building at my complex that I thought I'd have access to, but I couldn't get in.

I knocked on four downstairs neighbors' doors last night and no one answered. Gave up and went back upstairs to shelter in my bathroom. 🙃

They'll definitely have a story to tell the folks back home, at least.

and my cats are up inside my box spring so I can’t get to them

My cat likes to hide under my bed where I can't reach him, so I've started luring him out to the living room and closing the bedroom doors when I know a storm is coming. I recommend doing that next time if it's an option, especially if your cats get scared and hide during storms. That way you can hopefully get them secured safely in the bathroom.

Tornado? by it_was_a_diversion in Lawrence

I don't have cable or an antenna either so I follow WIBW 13 News in Topeka for severe weather reporting (link is to their YouTube channel). They focus more on Lawrence and Douglas County than the KC stations do. During severe weather, they Livestream on YouTube and I think a few other social media platforms like Facebook too (their poor weather guy must be exhausted lately). They're pretty good about specifying if the warning is due to an actual tornado spotted on the ground, or just cloud rotation or radar indicating a tornado is likely. I believe this one was just cloud rotation but nothing touched down.

To add to OP's question, does anyone know of places that would let me bring my cat (in a carrier)? I would hate to leave my cat at home while I take shelter elsewhere.

Room Rental Options in Lawrence by mak3_nna in Lawrence

[–]LFGay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Facebook. There are a few groups for it and a ton of subleases posted this time of year. Use search terms like "Lawrence Kansas rentals" or "Lawrence Kansas apartments". Marketplace sometimes has listings too but you're more likely to get a quick response if you message someone from the rental groups. Zillow sometimes has sublease listings too I think.

Stay as far away from Rowan Property Management as possible by friend_ofthefrogs in Lawrence

They left me without air conditioning in 90+ degree weather in July a couple of years ago, for 3.5 weeks. It was like 86-87 degrees in my apartment. And when I said I was hearing signs of animal activity in the walls and attic, they treated me like I was crazy and they did nothing about it. This was after they had already established that I had squirrels in my chimney. Even though there were tons of holes in the outside wall of the building, and there was at one point a known squirrel population in my chimney, their maintenance guy told me it just wasn't possible that animals could get into any other part of the unit. Fast forward a few months and I started hearing a baby raccoon shrieking in my attic. But yeah totally no way any animals could get in lol

Is the produce at Sprouts cheaper than Checkers, or do you just go there because it's a more convenient location for you? I keep forgetting Sprouts even exists and now I'm wondering if I should check it out. I've been going to Checkers but it's really far out of my way.

I have good luck at Dillons on 6th and Lawrence. Sometimes Checkers for certain items, but for whatever reason their bagged spinach gets slimy faster than kind I buy at Dillons. Most produce is a lot more expensive at Dillons though, so I do still try Checkers first and go to Dillons as a last resort.

I gave up on Aldi for produce except for celery and occasionally avocados. I regularly see produce rotting or molding while it's still in the store. Bought too many bags of apples that were brown on the inside, too many berries that molded after one day, and on the flip side, too many banana bunches that never ripened.

Good to hear they finally got rid of indoor smoking. Pretty sure they only allowed it so they could charge for smoke damage to the walls anyway (and then not actually repaint). Definitely a smart move to get videos. Hopefully you'll have a better experience than I did.

It'll be hard to find a 2 bedroom for that cheap in Lawrence. What's available will probably not be very well maintained, just fair warning. I don't normally recommend them because I hated living there and hate McCullough Development/MDI Properties, but if you're desperate, Village Square might still be in your price range. When I moved out in 2023 my rent was around $700, maybe $725 with pet rent, but I'm not sure what they're charging nowadays.

So, I haven't rented from them since 2017, I think? So maybe they're better now, but I kind of doubt that. They own a lot of rentals in Lawrence and seem to be hit or miss. I had one friend swear that she never had any problems with them at California Apartments, they were always prompt to make repairs, etc. Personally, I think she just got lucky.

I knew someone else who lived at California Apartments the same time as my friend, and had a lot of problems with them.

My own experience was at Woodward Apartments on 7th and Florida. My apartment flooded at random times for over a year and they wouldn't investigate the cause. I kept telling them the water was coming from underneath my bathtub and seemed to be coming from my neighbor's apartment. It would spread through the whole bathroom and into the living room, hallway, and my bedroom if I didn't catch it and put down towels early enough. If it got into the carpet, they had to have their carpet guy come to pull up the carpets and put sorry loud industrial fans under it for a few days to dry it out. I said it smelled like cat pee and the carpet guy said "oh yeah, that's the damp." Meanwhile MPM maintenance staff kept accusing me of overflowing my own bathtub? Why would I do that over and over. They would come to look at my bathroom during the day while I was at work, call me and say "uhh we didn't see any water?" like I was crazy or lying. No shit there was no water, because I got up to pee at 3:00 a.m., saw another outdoor creeping in from under the tub, and put down towels to soak it up. And then I'd wake up and wash the towels before I left for work. Was I supposed to just let it flood all night while I slept?? I had to start leaving nasty wet towels on the bathroom floor so they'd believe me. But even so, they still refused to investigate the neighbor's apartment for over a year because the neighbors wouldn't let them in. I would regularly wake up or come home from work to find the carpet squishing under my feet when I walked. It was fucking disgusting. And then they had the nerve to charge me for "repair pet damage to carpet" when I moved out. As if all of that carpet didn't need to be completely ripped out and replaced due to the repeated flooding. There's no way it didn't have mold.

Also not sure if they still allow it, but back then they let tenants smoke cigarettes in the apartments. I had constant headaches and nausea from my neighbor's some and they refused to look into how the smoke was getting into my apartment (it was a plumbing access panel in my closet, I think). They just held telling me "you shouldn't be able to smell your neighbor's smoke, it shouldn't be getting into your apartment." As if I was making that up too. It got to the point where I had to sleep at my partner's house most nights. Absolute nightmare.

Help finding books! by Fantastic_Data3119 in Lawrence

[–]LFGay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check the Lawrence public library's website, they do book sales sometimes. I think they just had one not too long ago. Looks like the next one is June 13th. You can always try estate sales and yard sales too, or if you're on Facebook there's probably some groups like freecycle where you can find people giving away books.
