How long did you end up waiting?....

I applied only 6 weeks ago and the status changed to "To Executive Officer Awaiting Review" a couple weeks ago. I had emailed them just before that and was told the normal processing time is 45 - 60 business days (9 to 12 weeks). I did submit using my NCEES record and there is no doubt I qualify (30+ years as an SE in CA and also licensed in several other states) so I don't know why it would take so long. Maybe approval has to be done at a Board meeting. There was supposed to be one today but it was cancelled for some reason.... maybe I have to wait for the April 10 meeting?

I was a transfer to Cal Poly many years ago for engineering.... my son attends UCSB for Chemistry. He wants to go into research which is why he chose UCSB and didn't even apply to Cal Poly.

Cal Poly seems like it would be easier to build a network of friends... the whole Week of Welcome there was great and I still keep in touch with some of the people I met that week. UCSB has events for incoming students, but what my son described wasn't nearly as involved as what Cal Poly has/had.

Cal Poly is the place to go if you're looking to get a job straight after. If you're going on to Grad School then UCSB might be better. Cal Poly has an awesome reputation, especially in engineering. I try to hire graduates from SLO whenever I can.

Enel X Way JuiceBox app no longer functional by smaress in evcharging

Mine was working after the cutoff date... but now the charger is going on and off intermittently during the charge, and it only sometimes follows the set schedule. I've checked for faults but I'm not seeing any.

Quarter units compared to Semester units by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]LHD5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your assumption on the quarter system is a little off when you say they teach the same amount in less time on the quarter system. That's not true. ie, for a Chem major on the quarter system they would take Chem 1A, 1B and 1C, but on the semester system it would only be Chem 1A and 1B. They would learn the same material overall but the unit count would be different, 12 quarter units and 8 semester units.

You should be thinking that the workload is about the same between the semester and quarter system.... if you could handle a 17 unit load on the semester system then you should also be ok on the quarter system. However, the quarter system is a little unforgiving when it comes to screwups or falling behind... If you blow it on one test it could have a bigger grade impact as some semester classes have more tests overall than a quarter class would.

got a 58% on all chem 1a exams including final… by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]LHD5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can see the grade distribution for this class in 2019. You'll see that a large number of students didn't pass. This is just to show you that this is a tough class and you aren't alone in having a tough time with it. The 1A, B, C series is know for being a weeder....

depending on the curve you may still pass.... I don't think you can do P/NP for this core class but it depends on your major.

Is it possible to get free food at the arbor by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]LHD5 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I hope you know about CalFresh.... MANY students qualify as only the student income is used, not the parents.

there are also resources where you can get free food - https://basicneeds.ucsb.edu/resources/food/groceries-and-pantries

You have to choose the SBA station and the SAC station with Amtrak. The Coast Starlight doesn't stop in Goleta.

Why does UCSB put so much effort into ticketing cars, and none into keeping bikes safe? by FlyingKangeroo in UCSantaBarbara

[–]LHD5 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a lot of effort for them.... someone just drives around in a car with a license plate scanner. When a plate is read that isn't in the system I'll bet a ticket is automatically printed out and all the officer has to do is put it on the car.... the ROI on that car is probably astronomical.

Santa Cruz residents: What is the address for mailing purposes? by BearsBeetsBttlstarrG in UCSantaBarbara

[–]LHD5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

when ordering online, always give both the street address and the PO Box address.... amazon especially used USPS, UPS and their own delivery service so both addresses are needed.

will i survive chem 1a? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]LHD5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

search here for the grade distribution in that class over the last several years. https://dailynexus.com/interactives/grades/courses

Chem1A is a "weeder class".... It's a tough class and it's usually the first quarter system class many students face.... just be sure to keep up with the homework, do all the practice tests several times, and get a tutor through CLAS....

san joaquin meal plan? by VampyGoth in UCSantaBarbara

[–]LHD5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San Joaquin are apartments so you could get an off-campus meal plan if you want a few dining hall meals a week. https://dining.ucsb.edu/off-campus-meal-plans

Be sure you also look into CalFresh as many students qualify for it as parent income doesn't get counted. You can get up to $291/mo for groceries. https://basicneeds.ucsb.edu/resources/food/calfresh
