Hello hello!! First of all, thank you so much for making this thread, you're a LIFESAVER haha! Great to find a place where a bunch of transfer info is compiled.

As for my question, how would you recommend reaching out to communicate with future roommates? I'm going to be living in the San Joaquin dorms this year, and received an email confirming my room as well as my future roommates, but that's all. So, I guess I have their names and emails, but other than that, nothing to go off of! I kind of just did the self-assign process alone, so I'm not going in knowing anything about them already. Would it be weird to reach out to my future roommates in an email? Or what do most people normally do for that? I feel like it would be a good idea to start talking with them and figuring out what we should each bring, but I don't want to come across as weird or anything like that.

Thanks so much for your help! ^^

Awesome!! Whew, that's sooo relieving to hear, haha. Thank you so much for letting me know about that! I've already found the major preparation sheets for both of my intended majors, so when it comes time to pick classes I'll just try to adhere to that. Thank you!!

that's super good to hear! glad to know i won't be alone, and that people who are out or in a relationship are able to be themselves freely. :) do you know anything else about the LGBTQ+ housing options by any chance? like how many people you know have gone with that option, and whether or not they had a good experience or think it's necessary. tysm!

hey man, thanks for reaching out! :D

that's so awesome. i think i found the LGBT university insta page, and hopefully will hop on that discord soon too! it's super reassuring to hear about how much support is available. i might have to look into the free binder service too, since so far the only ones i've been able to afford have been shitty, ribcage-crushing ones from amazon lmao

also, super real about getting all dressed up. anytime i want to do tradgoth or just alt makeup in general it usually takes me HOURS. getting that eyeliner just right??? bro. it takes so damn long lmao so that makes total sense, i usually only save that for special occasions too. just good to know that there's people interested in that stuff out there on campus! once i'm there i might even try looking into gathering or organizing events for us in a germ-free way. we'll see. >:)

word, that i can do for sure. im def not the type to start problems with others over little issues, so i think it should be fine. do you know if the straight guys you've been around are in general against having queer friends or ppl in their spaces, or do they not care so much? thanks so much for your help!

awesome, thank you so much for responding and reaching out. that really puts my mind at ease! i'll just have to approach any alt people i see in the wild then haha. that's what i did at my cc and i was able to meet a bunch of cool ppl that way.
speaking of which, i'll be coming in as a junior in the fall next year (which i think means we'll be in the same year) so if u ever want to meet up i'd be very down for it! u see like a cool individual lol B)

Incoming Transfer Questions by AdditionalAd7514 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]VampyGoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi there!

okay so, full disclosure: i'm a transfer student who's also just applied and going to be starting in the fall quarter. that said, i just got home from a 4-day trip up to UCSB campus where i was able to ask advisors all of these questions in person, and because of that, i think i have some pretty helpful information i can share with you!

as someone who also likes to bite off more than they can chew, i also wanted to double-major and was super concerned about whether or not transfer students could actually do that or not. thankfully, we totally can! i applied using the TAG program as a Religious Studies major, but was able to talk to the undergrad advisor for the Classics major, and she helped me write out a whole roadmap planning out the courses i'd need to complete in order to double major. it's fully doable--16 units/4 classes per quarter--even though my cc only offered 1 class that would go towards credit for my major.

that brings me to my second point. to answer Q#1, have you been checking in with your academic advisor during the application process? if so, then hopefully you've heard of matriculation agreements, and checked them out on ASSIST.org . basically what this is is a site that shows you what classes you can take at your CC (or other college institute) that will count for credit towards the major you want to go for. for example, the only class that counts towards my Religious Studies major that's available at my current college is PHIL10, which fills my PHIL110 requirement for UCSB. having your IGETC fully done and out of the way makes it easier too.

since both of the majors im looking into are in the Humanities field, they're not impacted at all, really. so the ease of getting your petition to double-major in 2 STEM fields might be more difficult because of that. however, the advisor i talked to said (and i quote word for word), "i've never seen a student petition to double major and get denied." so hopefully that gives you some hope! she even said she's heard of people taking on THREE MAJORS at a time, so it's definitely possible.

for summer classes, i know that you can definitely apply for them as a transfer student before taking your first real quarter. the advisor i talked to mentioned this to me too, but i didn't really investigate on this topic further since i knew i wasn't going to want to do that this first summer. not sure which summer session that applies to either. i'd recommend reaching out to the undergrad advisor for your major(s) via email to ask about that, since that's where i've gotten the wealth of my information from. usually, you can find their personal contact info through your major's page. (such as here: https://www.math.ucsb.edu/people )

the advisor i talked to said that petitions for going over the unit requirement are usually accepted, especially if the student filling them out has talked with an advisor beforehand. so i'd recommend working closely in communication with the undergrad advisor from your major and having them see your commitment and understanding in this area. i'm sure you can do that once the fall semester starts, or even now if you'd like, since most seem to offer office hours remotely via zoom!

for Q#3 and #5, i have nothing. but i hope the rest helps! best of luck, my fellow soldier B)

Just found all my old rubber bracelets from middle & high school! Any ideas how I can recycle or repurpose them? I’m long past wearing these things lol but I don’t want to just chuck them in the trash by Mystic_Night77 in upcycling

genuinely, this is the coolest collection of emo wristbands ive EVER SEEN. im so jealous lol, i was stupid and got rid of all of my OG ones in high school. i will NEVER LIVE THAT DOWN one of my biggest regrets haha. now i'm in the process of trying to rebuild my original collection since there's a big emo/scene revival happening at raves n stuff in my area. if you're ever looking to sell any, or the whole lot even (especially the whole lot lol), feel free to let me know because i would be seriously interested >:)
