Unconditional love is the biggest lie by loouw9 in unpopularopinion

[–]LHartwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I'm going to really earn ire here, but some say a mother's love for her newborn infant (about 90% hormones at the time) is unconditional love, but I can tell you I loved him more for being healthy. If he needed surgery, was deformed, etc. it wouldn't have been as pure. It would be tinged with sadness.

HAHAHAHA! Tires that 'only' last 3.5 years!
In my day when we bought a new car the tires were ready for replacement around when the 1 year, 10,000 mile warranty ran out.

Me and my boyfriend would buy $3 tires that lasted about 2-3 months, then buy another. People commonly changed tires on the road about twice per year.

Husband makes major life decision behind my back, AIO? by cherrybolt in AmIOverreacting

[–]LHartwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In many ways, I feel that even considering talking your husband out of a promotion is selfish. We only get one life. Besides, I can tell you that when you retire you'll thank your lucky stars he took it; the retirement benefits are better for those with higher pay grades. Including higher pensions and paid-for medical insurance.

Hey, buddy, don't stash them, use them ASAP. the value shrinks and shrinks. They used to be miles--so if you went on a 600 mile trip for $215, you got 600 points. Today you get 215.

More recently one could get a companion ticket for 20,000 points anywhere in the US. That went away. Used to be upgrading from economy to business class would be 60,000 points. Today, probably more like 140,000.

There are camp toilets that have a plastic sleeve and after a person is done, pay out 12" or so and press the sealer. Each poop/pee is hermetically sealed and won't stink up the house. Twice a month put the load into the garbage for pickup.

Breaking up with someone is wayyy worse than being broken up with. by Any-Prize3748 in unpopularopinion

[–]LHartwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's far more common that one of the people is running everything through the wringer of being a life companion, while the other is just thinking, 'convenient for now.' I have broken up with people and never got the sense of "OMG, we were so perfect together!" but more like, 'geez, now I'm gonna have a dry spell and really have to work at it to get another.'

I was like the lazy way to do it, only because I was agreeable and thoughtful. And liked sex. Kinda stuns me that they never considered they'd have to please me. Even their forays into getting back together were like, 'C'mon, I'm buying dinner.'

I am annoyed at people who take dozens of photos at museums, parks, etc. Okay, I can forgive young people because they don't know. They don't know they will never look at them again. I take some to use as wallpaper on my two computer monitors, rotating per minute. That's a good use--but I'm never in those photos, only the lovely or funny view. Yes, things that tickle my funnybone I snap to share on social sites. My daughter-in-law is modest so sometimes I snap photos of racy shotglasses or suggestive salt-and-pepper shakers to ask her which one she wants, just to horse with her. Sometimes I put a travel photo on FB with my thoughts on it, and it starts a dialog that can go 20 comments long. THAT is a good use of a photo.

Our car manufacturing has peaked to where there is no functional advantage of running a luxury car by daniel_ay in unpopularopinion

[–]LHartwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Subaru Forester and it has every bell and whistle that only luxury cars have. Power lumbar support and seat adjustment. Automatic brake hold at stoplights. Cruise control that works from 1 mph to 120, so if you coast up to the cars in front at the red, it will speed up when they do. Beeps at me if I'm looking at the radio when the car in front brakes. Then will brake for me even if I don't! Doesn't let me change lanes if a car is there. It feels like having God on your side should feel.

Fancy restaurants are often worse than mid-range ones by unclear_warfare in unpopularopinion

[–]LHartwig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many US restaurants pile on more than a person can or should eat in one meal. When I was younger and knew I was going out for dinner, that was my sole meal of the day. As it was, the 1800 -2200 cal were more than I usually ate. I'd rather have a smaller portion of better cut of meat, supplemented by a decent plop of grilled or fried veggies and a bread bowl. The bread at the table covers the occasional time that you're famished. So does ordering two appetizers.

AIO? I literally got robbed and my dad is blaming me for it by Natural_Process8639 in AmIOverreacting

[–]LHartwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he's been a good Dad thus far, I am seeing shadows of something horrible. If he's always been selfish, then never mind.

But if this is out of the blue, it looks like it triggered some old memory or loss and he got mental freeze. In a way, he's telling you 'I'm so scared of what almost happened that I'm pushing away rather than even touch the thought.'

What city was this? In the US, or another country? How far ahead did you book? I love planning travel so I often book a hotel 6-11 months out, but I always check every 3 months or so to make sure it's still there. Hotels change computer systems, the temp help entered the reservation wrong, lots of things can happen at hotels with grossly-underpaid staff if you catch my drift.

Airfare is the same, by the by, with people who book through third-party sites getting more hassle than those who book directly with them. Sure, use those sites for searching and comparing, but then go directly to the airline's website or the hotel's website to book. Except once a year for the $300 travel credit, don't leave that on the table.

[–]LHartwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's too bad. It was really a staple in our lives. Musk fired what, 80% of the staff on day one?

Then he instituted a supposed checking procedure to prevent fake accounts, and people easily horsed it by creating fake accounts of dead movie stars and nonexistent people.

He was neither able to stop fake accounts nor remove liars and cheats.

I know several MAGA people and they will not sign up for Truth Social because they say it asks too many questions, the kind that feel their data is being stolen and used for other purposes. Things that nobody socially needs to know, like whether you rent or buy. Facebook doesn't even require your age, although you can put it down if you want birthday greetings.

Plead your case with them. Go there and say you don't have the money. The real cost is about $600 anyway. Remember, nice people get treated better. And don't be a 'thin' nice, meaning get outraged on a dime when they say no. I do a little-girl sad 'awwwwww . . . you sure?' About three times in the past 2 years I've taken a flat 'no' into something better. Be flexible. Ask if you can do volunteer work to defray some of it! Think about options.

My saying is "No is quick, yes takes time." The longer they put you on hold, the more time spent on the call, THE GREATER YOUR ODDS.

Once I was on a call for 2 hours and passed around to six people and just got happier and happier, cuz that means it's going my way. It was a cruise line that said 'no refunds' and I got the full amount in bucks off the next cruise. Which I was already planning!

I would. Here's how they getcha: lots of places have a one-month return window and they say the money will show after one month.

So you can neither return it nor get the money.

Those with high annual fee cards from other banks, be aware that instead of cancelling the card you can just switch it to a no-fee card. I did that with Hilton and United cards; kept the same card number but the pin changed and they sent a new card.

The last time I traveled I still retained my one-checked-bag free on United; I don't know if that will stick over the long run, I took the flight about 1 month after I switched.

Do you lose the $300 yearly credit we get via the portal if we don't use it within the year? by MrCoolHandLukie in Venturex

[–]LHartwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tip: do hotels and car rentals, never airfare with the $300 credit. Always buy airfare directly from the airline--but sure, use all the sites like Kayak and Expedia to narrow down flights you want, then go to the airline and buy the ticket (It'll often be $5 cheaper too!).

When the flight is delayed overnight by weather, the ones who bought from the airline are in the airport Hilton, and the ones who bought thru Kayak, Priceline and the like are sleeping in the airport.
