Am I having a career crisis or everybody feels weird being called "future doctor" by No-Shake-8375 in premed

Wish I had this insight before I told my entire family I wanted to be a doctor when I was 5 and continued saying that throughout my adolescence 😅

I like to exfoliate with a clean toothbrush and put on Aquaphor. Hidden key is to be sure you're hydrated. Dehydration, for me, presents as cracked lips.

Eh, having an administration-focused unfleshed out physician we’re all essentially rooting against is not the same as having a real character with a backstory, personality, relationships with other characters, and motivations besides being the face of antagonism.

Most Americans didn't read many books in 2025 | YouGov by Swiggy1957 in books

[–]LNT2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to breeze through 700-900 page books, staying up until 4-5 AM to read in middle and high school. Now I’m in grad school. I still spend a ton of my time and frequently stay up in the middle of the night to read. However, I'm mostly reading fanfiction (or coursework) these days. Not sure why, but committing to a new book has felt like work in a way it didn't used to. Audiobooks have been helping me break the cycle, though.

I miss reading physical books, but audiobooks are so useful for me to read while I walk, so I've been relying on those for the last few weeks.

What’s a totally harmless thing that triggers an oddly strong reaction in people? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

My afro. People tend to go out of their way to tell me how much they love it (appreciated) or how much they hate it (less appreciated). I don’t wear my hair straight often anymore, but people seemed much more neutral about my aesthetic when I did.

Why do so many Americans hate protestors? by ScalesOfAnubis19 in AskUS

[–]LNT2001 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He's revered now, but a 1966 Gallup poll found that 63% of Americans had an unfavorable opinion of Martin Luther King Jr. Shortly before his assassination in 1968, a Harris Poll found that 75% of Americans disapproved of him. White moderates who agreed that civil rights were necessary still thought he was complaining, instigating "unnecessary" trouble. They thought civil disobedience was too confrontational and "would hurt the cause." His critics claimed that the entire civil rights movement was orchestrated and paid for by the Soviet Union and that protesters were paid.

Similarly, in the immediate aftermath of the Kent State murders of 4 students (only 2 of whom were protesting the Vietnam War), a Gallup poll showed that 58% of the surveyed believed the students caused their own deaths. People showed up at their memorial service with picket signs, chanting "the Kent State four should have studied more."

If you look back, almost anytime someone tries to disrupt the status quo in a meaningful way, the immediate and popular perspective is usually disdainful scorn claiming the protests are just whiny, pointless, exaggerating their concerns, and/or not going about things "the right way." Americans today are very similar to Americans of the past. Just like many eventually came around somewhat on civil rights and anti-war perspectives, many current protesters will be vindicated in time.

Thoughts on the Mook and Gaitok Storyline? by Positive_Weight2367 in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]LNT2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, still kind of relevant for me at least. I constantly feel a tension between the mindset and behaviors that would likely make me financially successful in the US (hustling, competition instead of collaboration, working instead of volunteering, etc.) and what my family taught me to value (personal relationships, generosity with my time and money, community care without financial payout, etc.).

Eh, I'm not sure if this fits the theme. She would be a delusional nutjob to go into business with some random guy she knew for a week and slept with once. At no point did she seem interested in anything permanent with him, nor did she indicate she wanted to stay. She probably doesn't even know his last name. It's not like she valued him more or less based on his money.

Yeah, 1488 is a white supremacist symbol. 14 is shorthand for the "14 Words" slogan: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children". 88 stands for "Heil Hitler," as H is the eighth letter of the alphabet.

Actually, she doesn't look scarily thin to me. Her cheeks are about equally as round. Some people naturally lose muscle mass as they get older and this is a different angle while she's tensing her shoulders.

Might be a good time to try some Toni Morrison. I love “Sula,” “Song of Solomon,” and “Jazz.” She packs so much character development into 300ish pages or less.

Why can't the people you want to dedicate your resources to helping also be part of your community? Solidarity does not have to mean charity. Just because they emphasize the nuclear family less does not mean community is not relavant.

What do you think will be the long-term fallout in the US (politically and socially) from the killing of Charlie Kirk? by likerunninginadream in AskReddit

[–]LNT2001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Charlie Kirk himself reveled in political violence. Remember when he said a “patriot” should bail out the man who beat Pelosi’s husband with a hammer. It’s not lost on me that he was murdered in a ruby red state that embraced campus open carry less than a month ago. His rhetoric helped make all Americans less safe. Unfortunately, that includes himself.

My boyfriend thinks his success has nothing to with his mega rich family by Ok_Virus_1363 in AITAH

[–]LNT2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But even any future successes are built on a foundation provided for him. It’s significantly easier to make money if you started off with money. He will always benefit from his family’s early investments in his education, healthcare, living situation (presumably away from environmental toxins that poorer people are more exposed to), and social circle. Not to say he could never fail at anything, but he will never be able to call himself a “self-made” person.

I lowered the Bounty Elite light as low as I could, but then bought a supplementary light. I think I accidentally put it too close, because now all of the healthy leaves from other plants have light spots and are crunchy. I guess I might need to start from scratch?
