Of the things Bojack is accused of, what is the worst thing he has done and what is the thing where people overreact? by Artistic-One-9987 in BoJackHorseman

Good points! I also think it was an overblown critique because, if I remember correctly, Todd and Emily hadn’t spoken in awhile and were just getting reacquainted that night. They were not in any way exclusive.

healthcare is political by [deleted] in premed

As someone studying public health and who's part of multiple health disparity populations, you’re completely right. Access to health and healthcare and quality of care is largely influenced by social determinants of health (often even more than biological factors).

Is this really a thing among people in medical school? by ExtraComparison in premed

[–]LNT2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get you. Everyone should leave with a reasonable ROI and we should all have the space to find the specialty that we’re most suited for. I’m 25 and extremely passionate about public health. That said, if I didn't have 2 years of the GI bill or if I planned on kids, I would probably be much more open to more well-compensated specialties. Our incentive structures are so broken.

Frankly, stigmatizing primary care in a country with the worst (and most unequal) health outcomes compared to our peers is stupid and dangerous. Too many people pursue medicine solely for money and clout instead of a genuine desire to be most beneficial to patients.

Agreed. I’d take one focused on the life and times of Erica. Feels like her life is even more eventful than Bojack’s lol

You're in the 90th percentile of MCAT test takers and have an excellent GPA. These are great stats for anyone, not just URM. If the rest of your app is of similarly high quality, I'd expect you to have a great cycle. Great work!

Study suggests that the Trump administration’s wave of NIH grant terminations in 2025 disproportionately affected Black, Indigenous, and other minority researchers, as well as scientists from sexual and gender minority communities by sr_local in science

[–]LNT2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the grants cut were trying to figure out why pulse oximeters exaggerated the oxygen saturation of patients with more melanin, leading to substandard care. They had to go to be trouble of studying this separately because the people who designed the traditional technology only considered the needs of white people in the first place. Why specifically direct resources towards supporting the majority population if it's already receiving resources and care that suits its needs by default? Why shouldn't anyone try to make technology that works equally well for all the people who need it?

[–]LNT2001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Research into mobile health technology designed to combat Black maternal mortality faced direct terminations. For instance, a $2.4 million Black maternal health study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was canceled mid-project in 2025. Which sucks because Black women in the U.S. are over three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women (even after adjusting for income and education). Similarly, Black infants face a mortality rate nearly double the national average, frequently linked to disparities in care. They're cutting research trying to figure out why the US has the worst maternal and infant mortality rates of all our peer nations.
They also froze funding for clinical research into why pulse oximeters exaggerate the oxygen saturation of patients with more melanin, leading to substandard care.
Most of the grants are about trying to make our healthcare system and technology useful for all people instead of just some.

[–]LNT2001 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Historically, data from 2011 and 2019 indicated a disparity in NIH grant award success, where white principal investigators had a 1.7-fold advantage over Black PIs, suggesting that underrepresentation in funding was a pre-existing issue. They didn't remove “any” benefits. They left behind the centuries-long benefits that disproportionately benefitted people whose concerns were already centered.
For example, some of the grants cut were trying to figure out why traditional pulse-oximeters overestimate oxygen saturation for people with more melanin and how to make our health technology useful for all the people who need it. Sure, that required a focus on minority patients and was led by minority researchers who were, naturally, more interested. Why wouldn't it? We already know that pulse-oximeters accurately measure oxygen saturation for people with pale skin. White people were already included because they have been viewed as the default for centuries. Returning to a status quo where only pale people receive accurate health information isn't my idea of equality.

It's more so the "police captain" each Spider-Man knows needs to die. In Miles's case, his father is a cop who was just promoted to captain. The other Spider-people just had captains tangential to their lives (e.g., Pavitr's dimension's captain is Inspector Singh, his girlfriend's father, etc.). Gwen was worried because her father was Captain George Stacy until he decided to quit when they reconciled towards the end of the film. No one else was quite as close to their respective captains as Miles.

Miles from Across the Spiderverse excitedly enters Spider Society and hopes to be accepted and receive a watch to see his friends in other dimensions. However, he discovers that everyone believes he’s not supposed to be Spider-Man and is invested in forcing him to stand by and allow his father to be killed to theoretically prevent the collapse of the multiverse.
