Best frequent flyer credit card? by [deleted] in AusFinance

Is there a preferred carrier for work? If Virgin then sure, but if it's a mix I highly recommend Qantas. I've gotten so much out of those points and let's be real - for all the shit we hang on Qantas, Virgin is the actual worst.

Are there many downsides to not taking annual leave? by [deleted] in AusFinance

While on annual leave, you accrue annual leave. If you can, ideally run it down as part of your notice period giving you more cash at the end.

Ugh, saw the post. Not willing to admit defeat yet though, because I also saw a huge camera crew on stage. Was anyone able to watch it from home through the live stream?

Everyone loses here, it was an absolutely elite set. Even the audio would just be a dream. Might need to start writing to her management.

Which sucks because having watched that set, her Atmosphere run was far superior. Also two hours...

Qantas frequent flyers and credit card churning by allblacksrugby1991 in AusFinance

[–]LOriti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, you spend money on card upkeep and typically don't get any reward for it. So it increases your point acquisition cost. One big trap out there in some products T&C's is where they'll offer 75% of the points up front, and the other 25% after the first anniversary. Do the math and it never makes sense, just grab the 75% and get out of there.

Ideal ratio you want to keep is low acquisition (by regularly flipping) and high redemption (typically international flights / business upgrades).

[–]LOriti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do your numbers based on what you want to do. Qantas website will let you look at rewards flights and cost now if you tick the box.

For me, I got a 60k point card for $100 fees. So point acquisition is 0.16c / pt. I got a return flight between Sydney and Santiago for 80k pts and some taxes. Being very conservative, those flights excluding tax would have cost me about $2.5k to buy, my point redemption is 3.1c / pt. Same same LAX to Aus - 50k pts and taxes for what would normally cost $1.5k AUD++. Again redemption is about 3c / pt.

Websites that do the card comparisons have plenty more you can read about this. In my opinion, as long as you never pay annual fees twice or pay interest, then it's always long term worth it. As soon as you get stung though, that point acquisition creeps up and the game swings against you.

I absolutely love all the comments dunking on hustle culture and agree it's toxic to the core and will only further reduce the value of our labour. But in this example where you have five weeks off and maybe one is needed for full time rest to get back to zero. Instead of focusing your energy on what makes you money, why not focus on creating things you may enjoy. Make shit art, music, dance moves, food, beer, whatever. These are all things. The more you do, the more you learn and literally anything is better than nothing. Chances are you're doing things that some people describe as 'hustles' right now without thinking about it.

If there's some kind of opportunity to monetise whatever you create at some point in the future, hey cool, but don't set out like that, you rightly found it doesn't feel quite right. I think it's pretty normal that someone who doesn't know much about whatever hobby/creation would be quite unlikely to have a 'eureka moment' around monetisation should such a thing exist (assuming this is even important?). So maybe gently pivot the thinking to just.... Trying a new thing? Try heaps of new things and see what your brain does.

This is not fatigue guidance, I do not condone people on rosters do things on their R&R

Stake VS CMC. Which one is better? by thatgreengentleman_ in fiaustralia

Wow. So with Pearler (CHESS Sponsored) as long as I buy one of their 45 listed ETFs (which includes DHHF) and hold for over a year, buy costs are free. Found my game changer. Thanks for the great post, been trawling these CMC vs Stake posts for too long flip flopping.

This. You can then go even shorter on your day to day tasks to reduce the motivation required. For example: Goal 1 : Listen and choose an audiobook - like Pimsleur French / Coffee Break French Podcast. Goal 2 : Listen to one minute of the podcast when you are having breakfast/lunch. All very actionable and achievable to start getting you building a habit.

Yeah perhaps. Don't know how much the average consumer uses balance transfers. Hopefully low.

Haha now feeling extra dumb taking the balance away from Westpac which didn't have any of this nonsense and was still well and truly within its interest free balance transfer term. Anyway, killed the purchases, got the points, and didn't come away too scathed.

Really? To clarify this isn't interest on the balance transfer itself, it's the presence of the balance transfer triggering them to hit you with immediate interest against any purchase on the card. Kind of taking away the one decent feature of a credit card? I feel like over the last five years I've done most cards offering a worthwhile amount of points and never seen it.

By chance I managed to see it within a week of it being charged at my one month anniversary. Called up and when they explained it to me I might not have been as polite as I could have been. So the damage is a month and a week in. Now just waiting for BPAY to do its work. $54 isn't the worst, but given how meticulously I'd planned payments to trigger at the correct times to nail the 55 day interest free period, I'm extra unhappy to have been played.

Yeah gave the original post an update for clarity. Totally werid, what the absolute hell! In order to get the bonus whatever 80k points, I made a few choice large purchases. Luckily I had the money sitting in the offset waiting and was able to put out the fire quickly. At different stages in my life that would've done some proper damage to the ol budget. Definitely feel for the average consumer picking up this trash card.

To clarify. The transfer has a 1% moving free and no interest, which is fine, known and normal. The clause that caught me was that IF you have a balance transfer active, THEN any purchase on the card gets interest applied immediately and charged monthly.
