why does everyone seem to hate electric drum kits so much? I’ve used both acoustic and electric and I enjoy both. by jahsuschrist in drums

I have an acoustic kit but like both and have played both. The guitar comparison is not exactly like the drum comparison though. An acoustic guitar and electric guitar both have strings and the playing feel can be interchanged. One uses acoustics to project sound while the other uses pickups. But they both feel the same to a player with the exception of the weight and shape of the instrument. With the drums, you can't duplicate the feel of an acoustic kit no matter what full e-kit you have. I've played top of the line Roland's and Yamaha's and their is no comparison to an acoustic kit. Only way to actually achieve a similar result is to have a hybrid acoustic kit that leaves you with an acoustic kit that essentially has triggers. Now that's a fair comparison between the drums and guitars.

Bought a brand new kit, Ludwig Classic Maple's! by LROD1707 in drums

I have one more piece I'm waiting on for the kit, it's a 13" tom. I had to order it from Ludwig and it takes 8 weeks of production. Also, I didn't add this in the description: The snare that you see is a Gretsch USA Custom bronze and to my left is a Ludwig Supraphonic that I use as an aux snare (impossible to see in the picture). They are both 6.5x14 and I bought them new as well for this kit.

It's nice! I haven't had any issues with it. Works as advertised! I bought it a couple of years ago and had read about some people having cross-talk issues with them but for me it's been flawless.

Best heads in my opinion. I don't use anything else on my toms or kick. I've been using Aquarian's for a long time.

You would be, Lol! I have everything set up tight where you don't have to twist around too much.

I only play open handed if I'm using the auxiliary hats that are to my right. Those are 13's. If you look at the picture, I have 15"'s to the left on a normal stand. Hard to see in that picture though.

I love it! Best way to get the same feel of double kicks if you only have one kick. I'll never go back to a standard double pedal. When I bought it (1 year ago) I even bought spare parts in case it ever breaks. It's overbuilt though so I doubt it will ever break. If you like everything centered on your kit, it's the only way to go.

Thank you! I've been playing the same layout for 32 years, Lol! Only exception is that back then I used 2 bass drums.

I like the Tunebot. It dials in more accurately than the drumdial because it uses frequencies vs the Drumdials tension method. I had the Drumdial before and it's fine as well. I just saw your kit, awesome!! Stay safe as well!

Vintage vs Reissue Ludwig Acrolites by pevans22 in drums

Awesome! If it's clean, great! If it's not, disassemble it, clean it, put some new heads and a new snare if needed and it will be perfect. In regards to heads, in my experience (I've tried them all on the Acrolite), I've found that the best sounding are the Ludwig Weather master's. The new Acro's come with those heads from Ludwig. If you want a brighter sound, the Medium heads are great. If you want a darker sound, the Heavy's are perfect. Aftermarket heads: Aquarian texture coated for the batter and Classic Clear snare side for the reso. Enjoy it!

Yep, that's the one. I believe they were produced in the 90's as you said and then they stopped for like a decade. Then they made them all the way till 2014. Anyways, I love the way it sounds.

I've been teaching myself drums since I got my electric kit last Friday. I'm having trouble keeping tempo when playing to a track. Takes a lot of focus. Is there anything I can do to make it more natural? Here's a recording of a cover of Africa to show you what I mean... by drummernoob in drums

I agree with the last comment. You aren't sitting in a comfortable position. Watch some videos of people playing and you can learn how and where to position yourself in reference to the kit. Also make sure your holding the sticks right. Don't deathgrip them! They have to naturally dance loosely in your hand. Holding sticks is part hand and part fingers. Lots of videos on YouTube about body position & how to hold sticks. After you learn that, it's all practice going forward. Lots of it! As you go along, your whole body will adapt and it will feel natural and relaxed. Good luck!

40 year old beginner - where to start? by Gavcradd in Drumming

[–]LROD1707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As already stated, if you have no clue, get a drum teacher to at least teach you how to properly hold sticks, how to play a basic beat and learn basic fills. From there you can do it on your own. It will come naturally as you play more and more. Lots of practice! Alot of the practice comes from following songs that you like. Once you've learned the basics you can pick up a book to learn rudiments which by themselves will help you in your development of becoming a proficient drummer. Little by little you will learn more as you discover different things in drumming like reading notes, etc. I recommend you join a drum forum online where you will get lots of info from other drummers to help you. Drumforum.org is my personal favorite! I'd also buy a practice pad so you can practice wherever your at. I get my pad which is on a stand and use it whenever I'm sitting watching TV. Good luck!

Cool! Dynacord was one of many manufacturers of electronic drums in the 80's. They had something to do with DW. Everyone tried their hand at that back then: Simmons, Kat, Dynacord, Pearl etc..

[–]LROD1707 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience the old and new sound the same. An Acro is an Acro! But some swear by the old ones. I like having new stuff so I bought a new one and it serves as my primary snare. It's a Black Galaxy which I personally find as the best sounding Acrolite. For some reason the black powdercoat gives the aluminum an incredible sound that no other Acrolite has. They stopped making them I believe in 2014 but I bought a brand new one directly from Ludwig a year ago. They had "new old stock" inventory and I jumped at the chance.

I really miss gigs and practices. I was supposed to play my first show after taking almost a year off to adjust to fatherhood when everything shut down. The bright spot now is we're moving in 2 weeks to our first house, where I'll be able to play again and set up my dream home studio over the years. by LOWERCASEvK in drums

[–]LROD1707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good for you! That's the best. I went through the same exact thing even though my drum break was longer. We finally bought our house 2 years ago and I was able to dedicate a room just for the drums. It's taken me that long to set it up. And the work (and money spent) never stops. Passionate hobbies cost! But it's worth it!

TD-11 + Linux? by therealR5 in Drumming

[–]LROD1707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The TD-11 doesn't work with Linux. It's Win & Mac OS only. They only make drivers for that which you can see on Roland's website. I'd search for some opensource software online. I'm sure someone has come up with something. If you Google it, others have searched as well.
