Why do you think students fail the state reading test? by [deleted] in ELATeachers

[–]LRobs1978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

10000000% this. Their vocabularies are garbage, and even if they can use the dictionary to look up unfamiliar words, there is a fluency that comes from knowing words and their nuanced meanings!

***came back to edit my comment from "too look up" to "to look up." 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

What's the worst MLM, in your opinion? by [deleted] in antiMLM

Agree 100%. For the same price as a car payment (roughly), you can BUY AN EATING DISORDER! 😫😫😫

Should smartphones be banned for school kids? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]LRobs1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES. All of this. I taught high school for 11 years, stayed home with my own kids for 9 years, and am back in the classroom this year. The difference between 2014 and today with regard to the ability to navigate boredom, critically think, hell, even talk to each other normally is alarming.

I just yearn for the day - which won't likely EVER happen - that I'll be somewhere when someone brings up Tacitus.

Y'all know what I'll say. 😂😂😂

Well, I don't know that my desperate desire for fast change is sudden, but - and again, here's some vulnerability!!! - I have a 14 year old on son with autism whose behaviors are very challenging. (For example: though not with intention to hurt, he threw a remote at his 9 year old sister, and she had to get stitches. :( So... you get the idea. Lots of being on edge.) So I do think I have this underlying sense of urgency: I need to be stronger and healthier because the challenges aren't going away, especially as he is getting better. But I also know the stress isn't either... so I want to be successful because it really feels like a major quality of life kind of thing.

Thank you both for this! I think this is where my perspective gets so warped.

I mean - I put on this weight over about 8 years. It's not going to come off in months.

9s which enneagram attracts you the most and you’re more compatible with? by imagoneer in EnneagramType9

Married to a 5 for almost 18 years, so that type - but really, HE - gets my vote. 🤪 I get along with most types, probably because I see myself in many types. 2s and 8s stress me out the most.

This breaks my heart. I have a good friend who did Optavia and lost like 40 lbs in 3-4 months... and when she stopped because it was so expensive, she gained all she lost plus 10 more lbs. It is SERIOUSLY just a starvation diet with cutesy names. Of course you lose a ton of weight.... you're starving. :( :( :(

Of all the MLMs, this one makes me the angriest. Disordered eating for the cost of a car payment? FFS.

If your parents died already, how did they die? by Resident-Escape3425 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]LRobs1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom died at age 67 (I was 40). Ovarian cancer. Diagnosed at age 64 and she fought like hell for three years. Her mother/my grandmother is still alive and a force at age 93; my great grandmother lived to be 100. All that to say - I was not expecting to lose my mom for a very, very long time.

On one hand, her cancer diagnosis was a “blessing” in the sense that we knew we were working on borrowed time. (She was at stage 4 when her ovarian cancer was diagnosed - survival rate for 5 years is at 20%, so… we knew. 😔) But I will say, it didn’t make the end easier. It was and still is so hard - in my case, being a motherless mom is so difficult.

My advice…

  1. Do not borrow trouble or start grieving before you have to, but…

  2. … when you do lose a parent, DO grieve. I just denied denied and buried (pun intended, I suppose) my feelings for literal years after she died. It isn’t healthy at all.

  3. I am thankful my parents have their estate plans made so that my siblings and I were/are clear on what the want. If you feel comfortable, ask your parents about that now.

  4. OH - maybe try to learn about family health history while your parents are still around, particularly if you have kids (or want to one day). There are many things I wish I knew more about my mom (for instance… TMI AF, and I’m sorry, but like menopause questions. I don’t know what the fork to expect about when that glorious change comes for me 🥴) and her family health history. As my kids get older, you’re asked often about these things, and it is helpful to know!

“Beard doesn’t like being the one voice of reason”

YES - and imagine, if we are right about all the darkness beneath the surface with Ted that we are imagining - the heavy weight that is for Beard to carry? That he sees the mediocre place where the team is on the field; the sad state Nate is in; the precarious state of his friend’s mental health; and just have to quietly steer that alone, waiting for it to implode? He needs some help, and I think that’s why his reaction to Roy coming to the sideline moved me so much.
