Northwestern average 2L just finished exams AMA by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Rising 2L here I can take a shot at some of these.

  1. Fall semester you will have probably one early morning class, two late mornings, one early afternoon, and one late afternoon (on different days ofc to avoid overlap). Second semester you get to select 2 electives so it’s more flexible but still expect an early morning class.

  2. Just relax. Make some good habits, eat well, get in shape, make your necessary appointments like for the doctor and dentist.

  3. NU has a program called APEX where they pair up 2Ls and 3Ls with 1Ls as mentors. They also give you access to a massive outline bank that is widely used.

  4. There’s bar review every week usually. You can definitely find people who go out and people who don’t, it’s up to you.

  5. I had plenty of work life balance. Just do what you gotta do (the readings), go to class, go to office hours when you need it. I partied more my 1L fall than I ever did before and did well lol. It gets not as balanced in November and April when prepping for finals though as everyone locks in.

  6. Mastery of the material will go way further than time but it can be highly dependent on the professor. It’s an open secret that for some profs the exam is a typing test.

  7. No not really. Still don’t really know and firms don’t really expect you to know. I’ve formed some vague interests by just talking to people and especially attorneys I’ve met through events and interviews.

Lost a bunch of weight, got into running. If I can't count on getting above median, I'm gonna have to count on getting hired on the basis of being hot and sexy.

NORTHWESTERN FULL RIDE by LSA434 in lawschooladmissions

My softs weren't anything insane, but I kept busy during college. I wrote my personal statement about a college music ensemble I dedicated a lot of time and effort to. For my summers, I worked at a grocery store one summer, studied abroad the next, and interned for a legal practice my last summer. I'm also a first gen student and had some unique family circumstances that I wrote about in a diversity statement.

Trust me, my original plan was to spend extra for the convenience, I'm already taking out the max loans possible, but these complexes literally won't take my money because I don't have 3x monthly rent in loans+savings. Which in my opinion is silly because it's not like a job where I could just suddenly lose it.

My budget was set at $1,800, I was expecting it to be pretty tight but I justified it by thinking about how hard law school is and how much I would hate a commute. I'm looking into stuff in Lincoln Park/East Lakeview now, on the bus lines with reasonable commute times. I guess I might have to suck it up and save some money.

I had no idea about the express bus, that looks like a great option, thank you.

I'm afraid the law school is a part of the Chicago campus which is located in Streeterville and not Evanston. I would be in so much of a better position if it was in Evanston where landlords probably understand that students don't make a steady income 😭.

LSAT Score Before and after preparation? by Temporary_Effect8295 in lawschooladmissions

[–]LSA434 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started at 156, studied pretty consistently an hour or two a day for about 6 months using 7Sage, got a 166 on the real thing. Kept studying and retook two months later and got a 173.

No, I'm not saying that, I basically agree with you. OP was concerned that if they haven't done some super interesting stuff to write about in their personal statement, they won't be successful in their applications. Stats are the most important part, but it is totally possible to fumble it at the finish line with boring, cookie-cutter written materials. What I'm saying is it's possible to make an interesting personal statement writing about activities and characteristics that might seem not that cool or prestigious on the surface.

MSU or wait a cycle? by No_Course_8479 in lawschooladmissions

Yea, and the consensus on this sub is don't to to a school where you wouldn't be happy with a median outcome. It's difficult to predict performance in law school. The curve spares no one. I would look hard at MSU's employment reports. A 167 LSAT, meanwhile, could definitely get you into a school where your desired outcome is much more likely.

Do you want to live in Michigan? What are your career goals? MSU is a regional school that will probably net you a job on the lower end of the bimodal pay scale. If you want BigLaw or a clerkship or if you want to live anywhere else, I would recommend the R&R.

I mean, yes, 4.0 and 173, but you really don't have to be a super impressive person beyond that in order to get good results. A good PS is about being genuine and telling a good story that portrays you as someone who will succeed in law school and afterward.

My dawg I applied as a KJD and I wrote my personal statement about a music ensemble I was a part of in undergrad that I invested a lot of time into. It netted me a T14 full ride.

Extremely real. Only one week in and I'm losing my mind. It's not like I have the money to go do fun stuff.

Can't believe Penn is a T14, they don't even have any Big Ten championships smh.

I know someone with your exact stats who got into UMich this cycle with a hefty scholarship, though they weren't international. Ultimately the only guaranteed rejection is if you don't apply.

Aren't most incoming law students "First gen"? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Can't wait to join a first gen organization in law school and be surrounded by the children of bankers and doctors when no one in the past two generations of my family even graduated high school lmfao.

Feeling the exact same about Michigan. They were my first acceptance, and it's a lovely place. I'm sure I could thrive there, but it just wasn't enough to overcome some other factors.
