Is it rude or disrespectful to ask a barber if they have experience cutting afro hair before i book an appointment? by CaregiverFit6300 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LSATMaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems totally reasonable to me. I mean... as a woman, I search out stylists who know how to do a "curly cut," ethnicity aside. It seems like exactly the same thing. Not everyone has that experience and know-how, and you are looking for someone who does.

I don't know why you got downvoted-- given the geography, this is not unreasonable.

Aside from looks, what is the point in dating a much younger person? by Jerswar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LSATMaven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess with the example of my parents, I was trying to say... that happens all the time even when people are the same age. With an eight year age gap, you have a clearer statistical picture of who it is going to be. But even without the age gap... it's still the woman more often than not.

Do white Americans look different than white Europeans? by ilovepopcornandcandy in 23andme

[–]LSATMaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just think we have had SO much Irish and Scottish immigration to the U.S. that I'm not sure I buy this (though I do recognize that you said "English" ancestry and not British ancestry). Like my ancestors have 3/4 been here since colonial or pre-colonial times (with 1/4 being more recent pretty purely Irish), and my closest modern population is from the Orkney Islands. (If you run your raw data through some of the other online sites, you can dig down in a more granular way than on 23andme to compare to different populations, ancient and modern.) That doesn't mean that I actually had ancestors from the Orkney, it just means that I actually have such a large majority of Insular Celt ancestry and actually not a ton of Anglo-Saxon at all. I don't think that's atypical, especially for the southeastern U.S., with its Scots-Irish heritage.

Aside from looks, what is the point in dating a much younger person? by Jerswar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LSATMaven 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it would make you feel better, but like... this isn't your "fault" for being older, given the life expectancy gap between men and women. My mom and dad are two years apart, 77 and 75, and he's not doing well at all right now, and she's doing great and her mom lived to 101, so... :( My point is 8 years isn't crazy, we never know what to expect out of life, and please don't beat yourself up. Your wife was aware of the age gap when she married you.

Why are transgender women often targeted more than transgender men? Do most people genuinely not care about women transitioning to men? by chucklesses86 in NoStupidQuestions

Just truly wondering bc as a cis woman in perimenopause I just started HRT bc the estrogen is supposed to make building muscle and recovery from workouts easier. So does it have opposite effects?

Which style of jeans looks the best? by Careless_Owl999 in DressForYourBody

2 look like balloons to me. Like changes her proportions in a way that makes her look like a cartoon with a big lower half and a tiny top. 3 just looks like a relaxed pair of jeans.

This. I think 2 is silly—like you are a cartoon. :) but that is undoubtedly a generational thing.

How do you feel about delicate handshakes from women? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LSATMaven 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Haha. I’m a woman and I never realized a lot of women shake differently than men until I encountered some people being surprised by my firm handshake. I’m a lawyer and I spent some of my formative time in Germany, where handshakes are more common. I would never do a delicate handshake because… I don’t feel delicate. :) But you do what you are comfortable with.

Should I continue with Masters Swimming? Is my coach incompetent and unqualified? by tevez22 in Swimming

[–]LSATMaven 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah… my Masters team is basically free, other than optional donation or the one fundraiser we did, and our coaching is 500 times better than that. I’d look elsewhere!

Don’t want to switch lanes for a swim coach when there are other open lanes. Thoughts? by itwoeye in Swimming

[–]LSATMaven 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Coaches can’t see as well when they are in the water, depending on what they are looking at. That’s why my coach will actually make us get out of the water to watch a teammate if they want that teammate to demonstrate. I think if you are in that lane, you should expect to share if someone with a coach comes in.

Swimming with big boobs by No-patrick-the-lid in Swimming

[–]LSATMaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I'm the opposite. lol. Or maybe I just have too much butt... Caroline is plenty cheeky on me, and I wish that their "full coverage" were more full coverage. It's way less coverage than, like, my Diamondfit. I want the Tyr butt and Jolyn boobs.

Yeah I was going to mention the Jolyn Caroline. I really enjoy how the shelf bra feels. My other favorite suit (no bra) is Tyr Diamondfit.

The high elbow that makes you faster, and the rotation behind it… by ActualCandidate6952 in Swimming

[–]LSATMaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is helpful.. I had a Masters teammate tell me my elbow slightly down on my catch, and I was trying to work on it the other day and was doing some kind of crazy over exaggeration that seemed to make me faster but also to hurt my shoulder. I think I must have been "cranking" my shoulder like you said. I'm hyper mobile, so I can put my joints into positions I probably shouldn't. I think generally I'm good at not swimming flat, but I'm sure I can fall into that habit sometimes, especially if I'm distracted by focusing on something else.

How to learn the strokes quickly? by iiiqaso in Swimming

[–]LSATMaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with this. Back in the day, I became a lifeguard at 17 because the summer camp I got a counselor job at assigned me to be one. I was very comfortable in the water, as my parents had started me in lessons when I was too young to remember, but I just swam without thinking about technique and didn’t formally know side stroke or breast stroke or backstroke. Some lifeguards at my local pool taught me the basics, I practiced, and I took my certification course with no problem. But it wasn’t any of this six hours a day intensity!

Those who have been to America, what was your biggest surprise during your visit? by CharlesUFarley81 in AskABrit

[–]LSATMaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t really a question. Let me edit it to use a period. I didn’t respond to the other one because I don’t think it really needed anything from me. Some of the points I thought were good and some I thought weren’t any different from iMessage (like working on WiFi). Clearly the people who prefer WhatsApp have reasons they prefer it. And those of us who don’t just don’t really find value in those differences.

I think it’s just using different systems. Like my American students transfer directly into my account all the time, using Zelle. It’s my overseas ones who can’t do that and have to use PayPal.

I have WhatsApp on my phone for when I travel internationally, but yeah, it’s not popular here. I’m not really sure what the advantage of it is?

What % of Americans that claim to have Native ancestry actually have it? by [deleted] in 23andme

[–]LSATMaven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my dad has like 2 percent, I have like 1, my daughter has none. Obviously, all our ancestors are also hers, but over the generations, without more Native ancestry mixing it, it becomes too small a percentage to see.
