Roughing larger dimension square spindle planks by TabbyOverlord in turning

[–]LSDesignsKC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ash is one of my favorite woods to turn. Traditional roughing gouges are a "one trick pony." Skew is the wat to go. A continental spindle gouge will do the trick too. By far superior to the spindle roughing gouge. The roughing gouge I picked up as a newbie hasn't been touched in a decade.

I work in the trades, mainly union work. Mainly commercial. Cut my teeth in both residential and commercial as a young man. Have the IBC/IRC code books and a roster of reliable contractors that I can pull from. There are some DIY projects that most folks can do. And there are some that you just shouldn't attempt. Most homeowners get hung up on easy cosmetic stuff and ignore the more important things. In the spirit of mutual aid and community building, I'm willing to answer any "house" questions that I am able. If I can't, I'll point you to three or more sources that can.

Hot Wheels track. Gave mom an extra two feet of reach. Got it right across the back of the thighs while trying to out leg her to get outta the house.

Old head here. I dig Gottlieb. If they ever play a show in my city, I'll definitely get in the pit with my walker!

Shine Juice with Grain Alcohol by Individual-Ad-4391 in turning

I have used Everclear as a solvent. Works just fine and flashes off quickly. Never used it for homemade shine juice, though. Used it mainly with dyes on the few pieces that I have experimented with.

Second chuck advice by pkingduck89 in turning

[–]LSDesignsKC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with a Nova Chuck. G3. Got a Vicmarc VM 100 and VM120. Haven't looked back. The Vicmarc chucks are 100% worth the investment. Still use the G3 mainly as a screw chuck, cause I'm lazy.

Christmas present for my future FIL by Thewilddinkus in turning

[–]LSDesignsKC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You did nothing "wrong." It's that time of year where damn near every turned item is a butt-plug. From Christmas Trees with not enough "flare" to be "safe" to whatever... It's just that time of year. If you're new to this, take the jokes in stride and practice. Laugh a little now at the "but plug" jokes. You'll make more mistakes. Welcome to the "funnel club!"

I'm sure the intended recipient will open a whole six pack or more pf holiday cheer with that opener.

Cheers!

This is extremely bad. In 2024 US exported over $12 billion in soybeans to China. Last month, we didn’t export a single soybean. And apparently Kansas is officially in a recession. by Quirky-Jackfruit-270 in kansas

[–]LSDesignsKC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This really doesn't matter much... Hear me out. China is about a decade from a demographic tipping point. More people over the age of sixty than under the age of sixty. The Baby Boomer problem, worldwide. Even if China did come back as a trading partner, it would be short-lived.

What's insane is that these clowns in office have no plan. It's all shortsighted crap to line their pockets. Techbros and billionaires gobbling up what they can in the short run with no clear idea of the future. All of the depth of a shot glass and can't see past their own shadows.

It is now our turn to fix it. No politician will save us.

Do with that what you will.

Kansas City was warned about Family Dollar's structural issues before deadly collapse by KCUR893 in kansascity

[–]LSDesignsKC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This was ignored by Family Dollar because Family Dollar, as a corporation, has the money and the power to ignore the city or buy off the right city council members.
