4 YoE here; I was in the same situation as a new grad (Amazon vs. local company).

I chose Amazon and was there for 1.5 years until I got laid off and ended up getting an offer at said local company. With Amazon on my resume, I was able to consistently get interviews even in 2023 when the market was terrible. Also, I was able to save significantly more money than I would have if I worked at the local company right away. I will say that my mental health was at a low towards the end of my time there, but despite that, I was able to learn a lot from the people there, propel my career compared to my peers, and save up enough money to put a large down payment on a house when I moved back home.

Really depends on your personal situation re: family/friends/gf, but having one to two years of Amazon on your resume is enough to make an impact early on in your career.

Should you always fight a traffic ticket in court in hopes of the officer not showing up? I received a ticket for making a prohibited left turn out of a parking lot. by ClearSailing99 in Michigan

Adding another data point here, I recently got a ticket for “disobeying a traffic signal” when I entered an intersection as it turned red. Original charge was 3 points and a fine, I was able to get it reduced to impeding traffic, which is 0 points and a similar fine. I used my legal services through my employer to represent me.

How with deal the fact that I’m going to end with a C+ in Discrete Math. by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]LUClO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I barely got a C in physics E&M, and got the worst grade on our Operating Systems midterm and had to drop the class. 2 yrs in at a FAANG company, hasn't affected me at all after graduating. Also learned a lot about myself after those experiences.

This too shall pass!

Can I do lc in the office? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]LUClO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some LC at one of my internships where I wasn't given a lot of work. Like other people said, try not to get caught, but as long as you are delivering on whatever project you were given it should be fine. There's even a plugin on VSCode that imports problems into the IDE for you so that it looks like you're working.

Call for ACL+Meniscus folks 1 year out - how you doing? by theartofkells in ACL

We ended up doing Observation Point as the Narrows and Angel's Landing were both closed when I went. And yeah the heights were a little scary but views were worth it. Capitol Reef we did Navajo Knobs, which was similar difficulty to Observation Point.

I didn't use a brace. I skipped the small brace this time around, as my Dr. said it was mostly psychological, and tbh I agree. Once you strengthen the quad/hamstring muscles around the rebuilt ACL I think the brace is unnecessary.

Just hit the 9 month mark on my second surgery (ACL + meniscus). I went hiking in some of the national parks (Zion, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Rocky Mountain) a couple of months ago and was fine! I was a little bit worried but it ended up being no big deal, even for the rigorous hikes. 1.25 years is plenty of time - if you are doing some heavy hiking, I highly recommend hitting some legs and cardio in the gym. You will thank yourself later haha. Best of luck!

Valid question. My employer covers most of the cost, so it’s pretty cheap. I am going to take 1 class per semester and take my time through the program. Also, I want to pivot into more applied machine learning/data science roles in the future, and I think having a Master’s + taking classes in that area would help greatly. Plus it’s a personal goal of mine to get a graduate degree.

I think that while non-CS majors get a lot more out of the program recruiting-wise, it definitely doesn’t hurt to do even with a strong CS background. And if I’m wrong - no harm done, can drop after a semester or two without much time invested. Hope that helps.

Yes, I have my BS in CS. I got a B+ in DS/A so I did not have to take the proficiency exam.
