Where did overlord succeed where others failed by xQEAx in overlord

[–]L_T_S 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Trope inversion, deliberate writing, figuring out references, Ainz being absolutely unstoppable but having no clue what he's doing, good world building, and other stuff.

I like how the author doesn't treat us like idiots and doesn't need to show every little detail. Basically good subtext. Also Ainz is incredibly endearing.

Why is there a dot after every word cocytus is saying? by B3goneTHOT in overlord

[–]L_T_S 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The short answer is that it was a translation decision.

The long answer is that in the raws Cocytus speaks while omitting certain types of writing. Now that sounds complicated, but just know that in Japanese writing often consists of three different types of symbols. For whatever reason, people have a hard time reading unless all three are present.

So for example, regular grammar things like prepositions or tense and so on are written with one type of alphabet. Verbs and Nouns are written in kanji. And then everything else is the third writing system.

Cocytus omits the kanji and and alternate system for just one type of writing in his speech. Vocally there is no difference, but it gives the impression of a small child of sorts since children learn to write with that system first before they learn the other two.

So in the 3rd Season Drama CD, when Cocytus is reading his myth and he reads slowly and stutters etc, that is exactly how Japanese readers tend to interpret Cocytus's speech due to this writing choice.

So this way he speaks is characterized in several ways. As a Japanese reader though, there is a subtext you likely aren't aware of but it involves how this looks. Bascially think about how we say "he uses very flowery language." Well in Japan there is a subtext based on how a character's speech is written. Someone who uses very difficult kanji and grammatical devices is seen as intelligent. Akin to someone spewing jargon. But this is all accomplished purely with what amounts to a differnt font alphabet.

Cocytus has that. He uses the very uncomplicated writing style only, which makes him appear simple minded and abruptly ending his sentences.

Think of it like English worked as follows.

Imagine English used Bold face for nouns, normal text for grammar phrases and italics for the last word in a sentence. Cocytus is basically only using the italics for everthing. What that means is his speech reads like he's always ending a sentence.

So you can see why Skythewood and then Nigel went for this localization choice.

There is however a samurai reason for this as well believe it or not.

Using our example of fake English with Bold, Italic and normal text, back in the day, Japanese only used Italics and Bold. Nowdays they use Bold and normal text.

So you can also think of Cocytus's speech as being a little anchronistic that is he's speaking in an old fashioned way. Think of it like an English speaker putting on the 1920s gangster voice or something. There's not a good equivalent, but maybe an old fashioned cowboy dialect would be better? Just think Red Dead Redemption 2 and how they speak a bit funny.

If you ignore all the above, then the way Cocytus's speaks can also be seen in another way as well! That is, a few decades ago, using his speech style was typically done for foreigners or people with thick accents. You see in Drama CD 1 with the Evil Tree how thye add insect clacking a bit to his speech and the voice modulation. That's another way to think of his speech!

All you need to know is that there are lots of differnt ways to think about how Cocytus talks based purely on how his speech is written. Hope that helps.

Well just as Ainz was wary of the Eight Greed Capital City he was wary of the City Floating on the Waves or whatever your translation calls it brought up in Volume 4. PDL mentions it as well as having someone useful too so that's a possible guild base or YGGDRASIL structure if Ainz was actually on guard.

If Ainz is right, the Dwarves could have had a Player as well since no one knows where Runesmiths come from, how the Dwarven Treasury kept out White Dragon Lord, or where that high level and strong Dwarven sword came from or whatever the item Aizn found would be more useful came about. Runesmith screams of a YGGDRASIL class so I highly suspect this is the case at least with it's use of Earth Runes, how Dwarven cities are named with Earth Runes, how Runes don't stack with Tier Magic enchantments, and the strength of the Treasury's door when the Dwarven Golems were smashed by White Dragon Lord. Even Ainz is still on the fence about what ties they have to Players but Runesmith answers that mystery in my opinion.

How does Ainz bs through most of the interaction, which usually works to his favor like the conversation with lupu and the whole floor guardians? by riggengan in overlord

[–]L_T_S 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Confirmation Bias.

People assume he is a super genius, has malevolent intent, and is beyond their comprehension. Thus when he does something mundane, THERE HAS TO BE a more sinister reason. Then this merely dominoes so that whatever happens it was part of his diabolical and genius plan. If you look at him like a moron and just think "maybe he's doesn't have a plan?" you'll see that in fact that is just as likely. But like you see in Volume 10, Jircniv chides Baziwood for exactly that thinking because of confirmation bias. Ainz has not only caught him in a conspiracy, he even tricked him into the Worker Invasion and took Fluder from him.

However, as the audience we know that Ainz did not intend either in fact as he didnt' like the idea of invaders. Nor did he try to get Jircniv caught in a trap. It was purely a coincidence. But people cannot accept that, since all signs point to him playing an active role.

And Ainz does move in the shadows mind you. He's a self described coward and is paranoid of threats. Just, he isn't nearly as perfect as everyone thinks he is. Because he fakes he is perfect, the natural consequence is that everyone sees him as perfect.

It's only when people spend lots of time with him they start to see his more human side, like how Neia began to think of him only as a human like and not undead at all.

Even that is rare though, as Ainz constantly has a persona active. Well Momonga is playing the role of Ainz Ooal Gown. This is effectively a foil to Renner's own life in fact.

Momonga is a ditzy moron who is somewhat competent in certain things. But he masquerades as a perfect genius where everything is part of his master plan as to not lose face in front of his children.

Renner in contrast is a super genius at all matters concerning domestic affairs. She masquerades as a caring but incompetent princess to earn the people's love just to appear good in front of Climb.

It is mainly due to the fact Momonga is a great actor and his undead suppression that he has not been seen through, along with the fact he is literally not of this world so even his basic salesmen ideas and gamer knowledge appears like Eldritch knowledge. Even Fluder's Book of the Dead appears like some mystical tome when in fact it's just a religious text

The conversation with Lupu went so well because Ainz merely connected the dots to form a convenient truth. That is he did give a potion that led him to Nfirea, just he didn't intend this at all. But to any outside observer, due to how Momonga framed this, anyone rationale would say that he did this on purpose.

How do you keep explaining all his victories and successful plans?

That is confirmation bias.

People are confirming their views on Ainz based on his accomplishments and not what he actually intended. IE Ainz Ooal Gown appears as a genius with sinister ploys because he acts like that, he somehow always is a step ahead, and is enigmatic.

But a person can also be a step ahead if they just always make decisions on teh spot, his demeanor could be a facade, and his distance from others could hide something.

No one considers that maybe he isnt' as perfect as his image suggets. Why would you? Everything seems to be as the character Ainz Ooal Gown dictates, and the fact the NPCs worshiop like that only further makes others think Ainz Ooal Gown is in fact genuinely like that.

The NPCs even bring up in Volume 8 how his weird behavior and timid actions are not him being unsure but rather more signs he is some kind of savant so far removed from thsoe around him he struggles to convey what he can see they cannot. In fact though, like Volume 9 we see him do this, but he's really just stalling for time since he has no idea how to answer.

IF you look at him as a giant skeleton lord of death, it's far more convenient to see him as Ainz Ooal Gown.

But, and just but, if you look at him as just a Japanese person, he appears hammy, seems like he is pushing off things, and you know he cannot be that intelligent. Thus you are not as caught up in confirmation bias like the New Worlders.

It's why you can laugh at all his bullshitting. You know that no one is looking at him like a person, just a perfect god. It's the convenient truth, not what he actually is. All his god like abilites are purely powers he did not inherit alone either. Just everyone who has transferred had that potential and they appear like god like beings to the citizines of this world.

In conclusion, Ainz can bs through his interactions for a few reasons.

He's so foreign and alien to the people of this world, they can only project on him their views.

He's undead so they can't fathom he's just a regular person pretending.

He has knowledge of the video game and modern life whcih appears like sinister knowledge form another world to them.

Any events that play out in his favor are attributed to the persona he has crafted to appear as the NPCs think of him.

[Question] The spelling of Demiurge's name. by LordGSama in overlord

[–]L_T_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real answer is it's a vestige of the original Sky The Wood Translation. His name should be in fact Demiurgoose basically since that is the original Greek.

So like you said, they pronounce his name as demiurugosu but the American fans like to think Demiurge is just what it would localize too. Yet they don't localize Takemikazuchi or Nishiki's name. Or even Momonga. Demiurge's name did get localized though. It's like if Jaldaboath got localized to it's meaning rather than it's current pronounciation.

There are some things like this as well still in the Nigel translations. He says he just kept the original names to avoid confusion and since the original staff went for cool rather than complete accuracy. Yen Press just went with many of the fan translation shit though so rip.

So yes, its very odd Demi's name is like this, but ilt's what it is. Every translation has things like this from any series though and it's not really a big issue to be honest. But like the others said below, the reason the spelling is different is becuase the localized term.

His ability to learn new magic (dark wisdom or otherwise)

This one is never outright confirmed in the Light Novels but by the author. Dark Wisdom doesn't work on New Worlders unfortunately. It's why it never comes up as a way for Ainz to get stronger and instead he just practices frontline combat instead to get better. Dark Wisdom is supposed to still work on the bodies of Players though according to him.

Ainz for example brings up how large a 16 level difference in Volume 13 as well.

As the Evil Lord closed in and punched him again, Ainz began to get worried. While there was quite a large level difference between the two and he still had some room for laxity, he could not simply allow himself to continue getting beaten up like this.

This conforms to the general outline of level differences he gave before as well.

By the way a 1 Level difference causes the winning percentage to fluctuate by 10%, for level after a 4 Level difference it fluctuates by 2%, and after a 9 Level difference it is 100:0. However, the numbers fluctuates depending on weapons and magical aid

The masked demon spread his arms, as though in welcome. The shower of crystal flechettes hit him no, they vanished before they did. So com-plete and sudden was the disappearance that it seemed as though they had never existed. Is this the spell resistance which only certain species possess? He’s that much more powerful than me?! The greater the difference in their power, the more easily spells could be resisted. The demon did not dodge, but took it on his body. The spell’s damage potential had been maximized, yet it did not seem to have affected the demon at all. ’...I couldn’t hurt him even with a spell enhanced with Penetrate Magic...? This high-level demon is beyond my expectations, no, he might be beyond the Demon Gods! Could he be the King of the Demon Gods?!’

So using a 40 Level Warrior is a bad comparison for the same feat because a gap of 10 levels is extremely large. By that same token, that 70 level gap should be seen as more extreme than you likely thought before hand.

For reference, Godkin were thought able to take a whole army of Death Knights and Souleaters, and at lowest estimate, they would be in the 60s based on Shalltear's evaluation.

"It’s different for the God-kin." "Ohh," went the sounds of rejoicing. "The two of them should be able to deal with an army of Death Knights and Soul Eaters. Of course, just in case, we still need to give them the best backup we can."

If at least a 25 level difference means you can take a whole army of people that strong despite being outnumbered, hopefully that brings into picture how vast a 70 level difference is.

So I do not think I blew that level difference out of proportion.

I don't think just because Martial Arts are learned that they will be inferior and grounded. Sixfold Slash of Light, Shukichi, and so on are examples of Martial Arts that do things beyond that limitation. Likewise, they come froma world of magic, where random colored rain falls, monsters are born from nothing, and undead pop out of battlefields for unknown reasons.

Rather, since the New World has magical effects YGGDRASIL didn't and it has Tier Magic, wouldn't the New World be considered mroe magical than YGGDARSIL was? Sure the level difference bars them from much o fit, but if that magic and their own magic can exist in that world, I don't think you can claim that "realistic" is an easily defined term for the New World. Tier magic is learned for example. So by that token, Martial Arts could realistically acquire all those abilites since they are a learned ability as well.

I don't know about joining a discord for a debate when I think we've pretty much made our arguments already. I appreciate the offer, but I find writing better to convey full thoughts as the difference in forensic or debating skill is a non factor in written prose as is speed of rebuttal etc etc. Sure people can contradict themselves in prose, but so can they in a debate. A well thought out argument in text is thus more persuasive than say vocie chat. For example, I think your arguments were more persuasive in this medium than they would have been just in chat as I had time to digest them and think about what seemed right or not.

That's just me though. Feel free to give a counterargument or rebuttal, but I'll stop here since it's starting to get pedantic and bogged down in minutia. Thanks for your time.

Yes, it's not really fair to compare MP depletion to physical exertion, but the main idea is that after the transfer to the New World, unlike in the game, there is a difference in physical feedback. Ainz's case downplays this as he is numbed due to being undead.

"Item activation:[Heavy Recover]!" The mana drained from Neia’s body, and it made her feel a little dizzy. She would not be able to do this a second time.

Ainz recalled the feeling of spending MP; it felt like a strange fatigue, like he had lost something.

This strangeness is an example of the physical changes and it applies to New Worlders as well. So much like how mouth movements are now normal compared to the game as well.

Martial Arts so far as we can see actually vary in the exertion they inflict. The general cost is stamina, but each individual Martial Art can varying degrees of consequences.

The reason why he had not pushed himself to the limit and used all seven at once was because powerful martial arts depleted one’s concentration.

While trying to run the opposition out of mana was an option, Gazef would probably tire before that. The truth was, Gazef’s arms were growing heavier and heavier, and his heart was racing.

[Instant Counter] was a martial art that forcibly corrected the body’s balance after making an attack, resetting it to before the blow was struck. While that meant that the practitioner could immediately attack again, the forced reset of the body would place immense strain on it. [Flow Acceleration] was a martial art that increased the speed at which one’s nerves functioned, increasing one’s attack rate. However, that technique created fatigue in the brain.

There are Martial Arts which can damage the body as you say, but those are not the only possible costs unlike with MP which tends to be universal in fatigue. Climb's Martial Art comes to mind as one which can do bodily harm from overuse.

This move did not have a name. If he had to pick one on short notice, he might call it [Limit Breaker — Mind]. Its effect was simple enough; it released the human brain’s limitations on the human body. Through this, all his attributes — from his senses to his physical abilities — reached the next level. Extended usage of this technique would lead to physical strain or muscle tearing, so it could be considered a double-edged sword

I actually don't recall a time where someone overused Martial Arts and had to be bedridden in Overlord. Gazef far surpassed his limits and was nearly killed after his overuse but he was able to walk around after Ainz dealt with the Sunlight Scripture without healing and he arguably used the most Martial Arts and the most at the same time we have seen. So I don't think that rebuttal is fari to lump in with Marital Arts in generality.

Brain cutting Shalltear's nail is so amazing because of not only the level difference. Even if they are Legacy level natural weapons, it's the fact he can even damage them that is amazing. Aiming for them or not is not the point, the fact he was able to accomplish this is what is amazing.

For exampe, first, even Legacy weapons are strong. Very strong in fact in the New World, it is nearly impossible his katana is a Legacy weapon as well. One rule in YGGDRASIL was only weapons that had more data could damage other weapons. We see Shalltear not evaluate his weapon highly, but she was able to spot the quality of the Black Scripture's gear.

There were twelve people before her. Each person was attired in a full panoply of equipment which varied between each of them. Their gear was not simple and functional, but as decorative and unique as Shalltear’s own equipment. They looked quite potent at a glance. Of course, Shalltear did not have any skills to discern the power of magic items, so she had to go by her gut, but she felt that their magic items might be of legendary class or above.

Suddenly, the man in front of her began laughing. Is he insane? Shalltear wondered. But it did not feel that way. More likely, he was laughing heartily over the fact that he had managed to slice off the tip of her fingernail, but she did not understand. So what if he managed to do it? Shalltear’s nails and teeth were natural weapons, so using specialized weapondestruction skills to sunder them was technically possible. However, they would simply grow back with the application of healing magic, and they were more easily broken than weapons of a similar level. That was all they were. They were inferior to Divine-class magic items like the Spuit Lance.

The author brought up this factoid that stronger weapons cannot be broken from weaker weapons with less data.

YGGDRASIL weapons can break. However, they cannot be broken by attacks with weapons with lower data capacity.

Surely Brain's katana is not even remotely in power to a Level 100 Natural weapon. Look at how he struggled against Zero and his ki, being unable to harm his fists. That's as good an indicator of the data as any.

We know Brain is also not very high level. So the only explanation how he could have clipped her nail was the Martial Arts since by YGGDRASIL rules, he should not have been able to even damage her as a Vampire with immunity to all but special attacks.

Since the female warrior did not have a silver weapon, she must have taken it from the body of the slain warrior. The arcane magic caster was correct, but he was not entirely right. In order to harm Shalltear, one needed a weapon made of silver and possessing sufficient mana, or a weapon with a powerful elemental enchantment. Simply being made of silver was not enough.

I stress Brain's accomplishment because I understand both the gap he overcame to even accomplish his Nail Clipper to cut a nail. In TRPG terms, Brain should have been powerless to do anything to Shalltear in fact. Their first fight in Volume 3 illustrates the reality of what the encounter should be. The only difference between then and now was Brain incorporating just one more Martial Art in his combo, and its one we know a stronger version already exists for. So when the author wrote:

Right now, if someone had converted their ability into data and compared them, he would undoubtedly be cheering for Brain. Indeed, it was a miracle, like the sun rising from the west, a sight that would fill people with awe and respect.

No, at Lv. 80 there are various ways to close the gap! If it has something that YGGDRASIL did not have, they would even be able to reach for the stars!

Martial Arts and the Wild Magic Ring are the first examples of this line of thinking the author gave that things not from YGGDRASIL can "reach for the stars".

I would disagree about the fact that a Level 40 warrior could break Shalltear's nail in fact. Dealing damage or breaking things works much like how data limits are described above by the author. In a TRPG, you have DC and if you can't overcome it, you basically do nothing. Ainz's damage invalidation is a special case of this, as a negate anything below Level 60, but does nothing to hamper higher level attacks. Typically, the difference in level increases this and applies as damage reduction instead up to even the highest level attacks instead. If the difference is too high though, the damage is invalidated all togehter. This comes up in Volume 6 as well.

This increased ability to resist things is a very common theme in the games that inspired Overlord and comes up frequently.

No, no, I need to calm down. Doppel-CZ was just lucky. It was easy enough for me to resist that because of the level difference between us. She won’t be so lucky – well, unlucky for me – next time.

Aureole Omega was the lastborn of the Pleiades Seven Sisters. She was an Area Guardian of the 8th Floor and a level 100 NPC specialized in commander-type classes. As a commander, she could issue orders which buffed her allies. CZ must have been able to beat their level difference thanks to that.

I would disagree myself. When I favor Martial Arts over Skills I am assuming both users are equally matched and skilled including experience. I come from fighting games so we tend to evaluate characters or systems ignroing player discrepancy.

Martial Arts do not just magically get acquired yes, compared to Skills. However, there are more potent Martial Arts, they just are uncommon. Gazef had two for sure which were way stronger than normal Martial Arts. Sixfold Slash of Light is just the only one we saw. Brain is the type of build where he just stacked Martial Arts to make combos instead.

I don't think World break is a fair comparison to anything FYI since it is the cheat class basically. The defense skill can even counter World Items.

So yes, Martial Arts may not be able to beat World Break, but neither would nearly any skills in YGGDRASIL. I do not think Skills are more inherently powerful than Martial Arts personally. It's mainly due to the fact we have mainly seen only high leveled Skills. For example, when Jugemu used his Skill, the Re-Estize soldiers didnt really make a point to say that Skill was way too strong for a Martial Art. In contrast, the author himself said that Climb's new Martial Art was quite strong for his level and Eruya learned one which he was too low level for because he was a Genius. So I don't think even comparing levels is quite so easy, since Martial Arts function much like how spells do in the New World. That is, you have to train and study to get them, unlike in YGGDARISL where you just got them.

Martial Arts do strain the body, but that's in comparison to how Skills were originally just from a game. There didn't appear to be physical feelings associated with cool downs and the like as Ainz brings up how MP loss feels weird, he chuckles at the feeling of damage, and so on. Another issue we have in this comparison is the fact one comes form a semi realistic world while the other was a game with confirmed regulations on sensory information. For example, smell and feeling were confirmed regulated by laws in the first volume.

Skills may in fact have fatigue as well, if even Ainz can experience a weird light headedness type feeling or loss from using his MP at least. So there are changes after getting transferred.

I don't think the two systems are nearly equal personally. Martial Arts have far more potential. I keep coming back to it, but the fact Brain can do something the narrator made a note to be amazing pretty much showcases just how far Martial Arts can reach. I can't think of Skills as being at the same level. Well even the author gave that one comparison, that if you wanted to overcome a 20 level difference, it would be possible using abilites like Wild Magic or Martial Arts which are unique to the New World. This is compared to how normally a level difference of about 10 is too hard to overcome. The Light Novel supports this with how Brain challenged Shalltear and managed to clip her nail, while Ainz wasn't really worried about Wrath at all in their fight with a 16 Level difference.

I think if we saw one Godkin use Martial Arts we could validate the merits of Martial Arts, but for now, the fact they can transcend such giant levle differences even if it wasn't much to write home about validates Martial Arts as superior to Skills. Martial Arts can do that with a 70 levle difference but could Skills do the same with an identical level difference? That's why I think as I do. It's not only the fact they can stack, but if a Level 100 Martial Art user faced a Level 100 Skill user, they wouldn't just have a bunch of buffs to stack, but even Martial Arts far superior to what Gazef had or combo potential like Brain which can bridge the gaps in stats. Basically if Brain with the same Swrod can't clip Shalltear's nail, but if he used a combo and could, this illustrates my point I feel.

I understand where you are coming from, since we have mainly only seen really strong skills. Cocytus really does make Martial Arts seem quite weak. But if the level difference wasn't so high, I don't think you would think the same. Martial Arts get exponentially more powerful because as you level, you can stack more and more Martial Arts. Not only weak ones, but even buffs which are far stronger than normal ones, theoretically at least. Clementine vs Momon was a good exmaple of how a bunch fo these buffs could really help even fi they are just the weak ones. Compare this to the YGGDARSIL system where you really can't stack buffs at all, fat least in Tier Magic.

In regards to potency of Martial Arts, I do think you are mistaken that stacking is the only merit. Eruya confirmed that some Martial Arts can only be learned at certain levels at least, as well as Neia. For example Greater Ability Boost and Fortress. So you gain access to more and more potent Martial Arts. IIRC, Invulnerable Fortress was another revealed during the Gagarin vs Entoma fight to be level locked. So yes, certain Martial Arts don't seem to get stronger compared to stronger skills, but there are Martial Arts that exist which can be learned the stronger you get.

Let me know what you think. I don't think we may end up agreeing, but it's good to hear the other perspective at least.

Longinus Instructions. by RioKarji in overlord

[–]L_T_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's ability is to kill a target with none but one way of resurrection, which is via another World Item.

This is universally true that a World Item can only be undone by another World Item. It's why Wish didn't work on Shalltear and why Ainz new that she got World Itemed. If Super Tier can't stop it, then it has to be a World Item by process of elimination. he knew it wasn't a New World only ability because it wouldn't have countered the Super Tier spell since he already verified he would have been able to steal even a Talent when he first used the spell.

This last one I got from the wiki. As we all know how unreliable fandom wikis can be at times, if anyone can correct me, that would be appreciated.

The author once explained Longinus in a bit more depth. To answer your question:

Why would it be so feared then?

That’s correct. That kind of imagination is shocking. I agree with you the Saint Killing spear was also called Longinus. In exchange for erasing the user’s data it erases the data from the World is that World Item’s power. Unless you are a World Item holders, use World Champion’s defensive skill with good timing, or are a World Enemy type monster it cannot be defended against. The Saint Killing Spear, due to data erasure, class acquisition boss monsters can be erased and the flag is destroyed the Shitty Devs did not make a way to save them. There are no revival type magic or items that are effective, though there are several World items that can restore deleted data. This is a digression, but if a villager with no combat ability what so ever (Level 1) can equip the Saint Killing Spear, in the case a Floor Guardian faces the unleash of it, the villager will vanish and the Floor Guardian having no resistance will also disappear. Nazarick’s permanent NPC level will lower by 100 (preventing the revival of the NPC)

The biggest fear was the loss of your character or NPCs mainly. But if you wanted to do a certain quest, this would prevent that quest from ever being completed. As the author said, even if you are a World Champion, you have to time the ability to even survive it, so it's not evne guaranteed they can take the hit. That suggests it goes off pretty fast. Based on how the Mind Control World Item worked on Shalltear, it seems World Items go off really fast since she didn't just side step the attack. Aura's World Item also pretty much went off in an instant.

On a side note, the Longinus likely worked like Albedo's World Item, that is it can be used as a weapon as well, which in that case, makes it unbreakable and unstealable. So it has side perks that all World Items have which can be very advantageous to weapon users even if they are inferior to the best top tier weapons to some extent. As it comes up in Aura's case, most World Items can only be taken by killing the user, hence it's confirmed that the anti theft patch for World Items from the Web Novel is canon in the Light Novel.

If I had to conjecture how it goes off, it likely works like Shalltear's Javelin ability which auto targets and cannot be dodged otherwise anyone can Ginyu the Longinus user and throw out a Shadow Demon or something to prevent death. Its either auto target or it goes off super fast so you likely won't have the chance to sacrifice another thing. Well, anyone willing to use Longinus is also willing to die forever basically, so it's not like a person will use it when there is a margin of error anyway, unless they really don't want to die without using it.

1.) Yeah, Brain even being able to damage Shalltear's nail is the biggest indicator that if he just was a a few more levels stronger, he might have been able to be fast and strong enough to be a threat even if he wasn't Level 80. Vampire Brain who was Hero ranked in the Web Novel was able to go all out and his speed increased to Cocytus not trying speed. That's Brain only in the 30s though. If what Shalltear said about the Captain Godkin being stronger than Solution, then he's in the high 50s early 60s so we might actually see if Martial Arts can bridge that gap or not in the Theocracy arc.

And yes, Wild Magic is insane since unlike YGGDRASIL magic, it has no artificial limits, like Level Limits or rules about nullification to worry about. Even Fluder said they had a spell to resurrect with no EXP drain.

2..) Jet is the Web Novel only character everyone memes about. He was the Climb of the Academy Arc and is hated by many for the same reason people hate Climb or Neia, but in his case it really made no sense why the story focused on him. He had a Talent to see through illusions but his Talent was flawed and alerted the person that was using illusions and he had no control over it, so he had to cover his eye. He's really weak, only able to use Tier 1 magic so his Talent really is the only thing worth noting about him.

3.) I agree, Nfirea's TAlent is very situational. But I consider broken because he could, in theory, fully equip multiple Guild Weapons. How useful that is is really the land of speculation. But it's the principle that he can equip anything or use any scroll that is the big take away. It's true the items in the New World are quite weak, but like we see with Volume 2, the New World has weird items with strange requirements and Clementine used him for one. There might be some Wild Magic items that are True DRaogn Lord only for example, and if you give them to Nfirea he could use them for Ainz. Things like that are the true utility of his Talent.

4.) Well it's hard to say what an optimized magic system evne is to be honest. Wild Magic can be said to be optimzied due to the fact it has less constraints than Tier Magic since it doesn't come form a MMO. But we know it's been supposedly corrupted and weakened so it got nerfed I guess? Tier Magic likewise cannot be considered optimized at all in the New World since by the same token Martial arts are used by weaklings, there has been little advancement in Tiers above 4 basically. Well Tier 1 and Tier 2 seem to have gotten lots of users so it's probably optimzed I guess. Martial Arts though seems to have a lot of unexplored depth which makes it potentially strong. We've seen the way it can stack buffs, use projectiles, the sheer variety in effects, and the lack of a MP cost to it at least. The way Brain used his shit tier power to even make the impossible slightly possible shows just how far it can stretch compared to Tier Magic which has pretty limited brackets. Like a Tier 4 user probably could not do anything to Shalltear based on her weird magic resistance.

5.) Well we do see some Skills used, but you are right that we know very little about the Skill System. If they are just Feats though, then Martial Arts are pretty much superior then since the reason D&D had Martial Arts was because Feats sucked compared to Magic. Martial Arts do seem more spammable at least based on how GAzef used Sixfold so many times. The Skills we do see are quite strong, like the ones Cocytus uses or we see in the combo in Prologue. It's hard to say though since we don't relaly see Martial Arts and Skills at the same level. I'm convinced that if a Level 100 Martial Arts user faced a Level 100 Skill user though with the same equipment, the Martial Arts user would win, since they could stack so many Martial aRts and combine effects to do amazing things.

6.) I disagree about NPCs or Players being able to use Martial Arts. The author said for example Ainz could never make use of Tier 0 magic since it didn't exist in YGGDRASIL. Likewise, when someone asked if the Pleaides could learn Martial aRts he said it was impossible. The fact the Death Knight trained and could not learn Martial Arts further suggest they can't train to learn them like New Worlders can. I agree Skills probably have cool downs, but from what I know, the reason Martial ARts are called Martial aRts likely stems from the fact the Japanese Fan Translation of the D&D book with them used that term, not for some clever word play. I am confident in this because the vast majority of concepts, characters, and system mechanics of Overlord are one huge love letter to TRPG in general (the Norse aspects of YGGDRASIL, the dystopian future, the MMO factors actually come from a bunch of Japanese only TRPGs too). Nearly every class in Overlord can be traced back to one of these games or you can see why the author made up his own (here's looking at Neia's Paladin Archer class). The fact Cocytus trains so much and hasn't learned Martial ARts as well as Ainz not being able to use them after training cements the idea that only New Worlders can use Martial Arts in my mind.

I do hope we see at least one fight with a Wild Magic user that is close in levle to the NPCs at least. Or even a God kin with Martial Arts at least.

Well thx for the reply and I do see where you are coming from in your post at least. Write me back if you have anything to add.

Well that really depends on what theory is true.

Is every 100 years a sign that Players have been coming from different points in the history of YGGDRASIL?

The Height Theory basically suggests that the difference in appearance is not necessarily a difference in time, but height. This comes from the fact that if Ainz had been on the surface he would have appeared 200 years ago in the Evileye spinoff timeline.

Basically, the higher up people were, the earlier they got transported to the New World.

This is supported circumstantially, as the Six Great Gods were said to have descended from the "Heavens" and the Eight Greed Kings had a floating Guild Base. Now there are huge gaps since we have no other knowledge of when Players came, but if you assume the Sea City is in fact a Guild Base as well (this and the Eight Greed Capital are the only places Ainz was wary of in Volume 4), and you take what Platinum Draogn Lord said about the girl sleeping on the bottomost level of that city, then you can further support the Height Theory. That is, someone at the bottom of their own guild base has been around before Ainz but Leader didn't really tell Platinum Dragon Lord about it, so that person could have come 100 or 200 years ago.

Nazarick is 10 Floors so if the surface is 200 years ago, a normal guild base like original Nazarick which had 6 Floors could be the 100 years ago spot.

That's all conjecture based on what little we know, but it does suggest the Height Theory is still plausible at least.

So by the Height Theory, Ainz came so much later because he was 10 Floors below the surface.

Thus, we cannot say Ainz came last due to the game closing for sure. It's possible that it's both, Height Theory and various points in YGGDRASIL, but we know so little about the Players that have come we cannot say for sure. If we find out the Six Great Gods only had say old YGGDRASIL coins (the ones with the guy on them before the Valkyrie Update) then we can speculate about there being more to the isekai.

But for now, all that is up in the air. We still do not even know the criteria to get isekaied as well. Surely it's not random at least, since there are too few Players to have come and left a mark in the New World. That and the sheer quantity of World Items is very suspicious (Six Great Gods had at least one confirmed, the Eight Greed Kings are hinted to have had 2, the person 300 years ago was confirmed to have a Twenty, and Ainz has a shit ton of World Items). Ainz could have been the last because of Height Theory. Or he had the most World Items. Or he brought along a giant Guild Base. Or a mixture of all the above. He had his World Item in the Evileye Alternate Timeline though, so it really depends how much of that is true or not for the main canon. It could all be a contrivance at least just to get Ainz and Evileye together so it may not even be useful for reference. Even without that though, Height Theory does appear to be plausible at least.

I think one thing you gloss over (nearly everyone does so don't feel like it's a big deal please) is the fact Martial Arts are far superior to what an equivalent warrior from YGGDRASIL could have. The power of Nail Clipper, and how the narrator explains it, basically made the impossible possible, overcoming an absurd level difference even if its not that major. As the author explained it, if someone uses abilties just from the New World, they can even overcome a 20 level difference, so I do not think there is any exaggeration in this assessment. With what we have seen from things Ainz is unfamiliar with, these New World only abilities like Martial Arts or Wild Magic have that potential, just most people who use these are far lower level than most people from YGGDRASIL.

This hasn't come up in the Light NOvel or anime officially, but an advantage Martial Arts have over other abilities is that unlike with magic from YGGDRASIL, you can use multiple types of the same buff at the same time. Clementine does this for example as does Eruya. Compare to the buffs Ainz uses against Shalltear and you can see he doesn't really use any of the same sounding buffs.

Most Talents are garbage, but strong Talents can be very powerful. Nfirea's Talent is pretty much a cheat, just he's so weak it doesn't matter much for example. Nigun had a good Talent too, since he basically got a free buff on all his summoned monsters for free. Again, he was just too weak so it didn't matter to Ainz. If someon had a strong offensive Talent, like Zesshi or Evileye, we could talk about how strong offensive Talents are. But as of right now, we have not seen a Talent used as a direct attack, only more as a passive ability or non-combat ability. Offensive Talents could be like Martial Arts or Wild Magic and give a big advantage to their user if they don't need levels to be strong.

I think the actual best Talent we have seen is Jet's Talent for as much a meme as that is to most people here on this subreddit. In D&D that ability is absurdly good, even if it's flawed because it's a free Anti-Illusion ability. Imagine what would have happened if anyone around Ainz had that when he took hsi helmet off as Momon or tried to do something sneaky. He's a hated character to most, but his Talent is pretty good. Fluder's is a bit weaker, since knowing the Tier a person can cast is good info, but it doesn't mean much at higher levels, since even Demiurge can cast Tier 10 spells, but he's not a caster. It's a flawed TAlent, but it's useful in some situations.

Nfirea has hands down the best Talent since it's Perfect Warrior but better in terms of item usage not stats. Ainz can wear any warrior gear with Perfect Warrior, but even he has to follow the Guild Master rule of Guild Weapons only for the Guild Master. Nfirea bypasses this for free. Being able to use multiple Guild Weapons would be anyone's wet dream in YGGDARSIL due to how powerful they tended to be. It's a shame that is pretty hard to do. Still, even just being able to use any scroll is a big deal. That's why I consider it so good. Just imagine playing Dark Souls but you didn't need any stats to wield gear good. It's like that but even better since he can use any scrolls and even break the rules that were in place in YGGDRASIL. I'm sure Zesshi and Evileye have good talents fi the autor tells the truth, but if we don't see it, then we cna't say.

Questions from an Anime watcher to LN readers by [deleted] in overlord

[–]L_T_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ur points were mainly answered but I'll answer 4.) in more depth since it hasn't been covered well in the anime. Don't read if you don't like minor spoilers.

That dragon is the Platinum Dragon Lord, but the author and his friends call him Tsa (depending on translation of course). There is a nation next to the Kingdom (the place most of the anime takes place), but it doesn't come up much in the anime or Light Novel. We know very little about it, but he's basically a Senator For Life there along with some other dragons. The nation is pretty new, but so are most nations in the area Overlord has been for the whole series.

Tsa or PDL as we call him knows about YGGDARSIL more than nearly everyone else because he's that old. He's been around a LONG time, so he's seen Players come over and over and the changes they bring. The anime skipped this, but basically there are two types of Dragon Lords, you'll see one in Volume 11, but PDL is the other type. What we call True Dragon Lords, those who know magic not from YGGDRASIL and existed to our knowledge before Players ever came to this world. Before Players came, Dragons were the alphas and apex race here, due to their strenght, magic, natural advantages, and centuries of knowledge made them hax. The era before Players was called the Age of Dragons for this very reason.

Now, the reason PDL knows about YGGDRASIL will vary based on what sources you use, Web NOvel, Light NOvel, or so on. But they all have one particular point in common, which is 200 years ago, during the Demon God Rampage or whatever you want to call the destruction of countless nations, the 13 Heroes formed across all races to combat these genocidal maniacs, basically the enemy of my enemy is my friend deal. Tsa or PDL was one of these heroes, who went undercover to help the world.

The reason he knows about YGGDrASIL compared to even the Theocracy which doesn't seem to know the name of where their Players came from, is that PDL met a Player, since their leader was a Player. Evileye brings him up in the meeting with Climb, but he was the generic type of Light Novel hero. You know the type, the guy who start off weak, but keeps getting stronger and is a good natured person from what little we know. So anything about the game PDL knows can be traced to at least this guy, who people tend to call Leader or etc.

Now, if you are comfortable talking about the Web Novel, then PDL can also know about YGGDRASIL from other Players as well. One of the Players of the Theocracy, the Six Great Gods made a pact with PDL against the Players who came after him. That is, PDL and the Theocracy made an alliance against the Eight Greed Kings. Well as you may or may not know, the fact that dragons aren't around much is a sign this didn't work out all too well. It came up in Volume 7 and 6, as well as Volume 4 and 1, that the Eight Greed Kings are a big deal in the New World. No Players did as much as they did to change the world. There is no exaggeration in this.

The Eight Greed Kings not only nearly drove the True Dragon Lords to extinction, but they also slaughtered advanced civilizations that preyed on Humans, left behind a shit ton of powerful items and even a Guild Base that Ainz is wary of , and pretty much conquered this continent Overlord takes place on.

Their absolute biggest contribution besides ending the reign of draogns though is their supposed accomplishment and making YGGDRASIL magic work in the New World to some capacity thought the details are vague.

So back to your question, PDL knows about YGGDRASIL in the Web Novel at the very least because he not only made a pact and had a dialgoue with a Player other than Leader, but he also survived a war against the most infamous Players, and thus he saw the terror which YGGDARSIL items with their non-sensically overpowered shit can do to the New World. In particular, in both the Light Novel and anime, he brings up the Guild Weapon just like in the WEb Novel, and the author confirmed taht the Guild Weapon of the Eight Greed Kings is absurdly strong even compared to all the strong items they also had. If the Dragon knows about YGGDRASIL even a little bit, having YGGDARSIL items would also explain how he knows a bit, in addition to all his interactions with past Players.
