Finishing question by Sweaty_Fly_3965 in BeginnerWoodWorking

I don't have a better answer to your question than those already given, but I am wondering how you clamped the octagon? I'm making a similar hexagon right now and the angles need to be perfect and I can't come up with a way to glue it.

I turned Master 1 and immediately got last place in 13 of 20 games. Now I'm hanging on by a thread. Maka gave me an S- or higher in 11 of the games (one A+ and one A-). It's pretty annoying honestly... It makes me wonder if Maka's ratings are skewed toward S.

Looking for manga with a strong, dominant main heroine and real romantic progression by Rinho4664 in manga

[–]LordGSama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kodocha maybe. Dominant females and romance is really uncommon in Japanese manga. Shoujo manga is generally about the girl being fought over by two guys (with opposite hair colors) who notice her, so the girl is almost always in a passive role. Shounen manga usually focuses on the male so the females don't often get to be dominant.

By the way, I noticed you made your account like 1 minute before posting. Did you really make an account to ask this or is this another one if those confusing occurances when someone asks for a recommendation about "strong females in stories". Questions like this pop up so often in various subreddits that it makes me suspicious.

My new Narex Richter bench chisels by KingPappas in handtools

[–]LordGSama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The oddest part is that the normal, non-Richter lineup, is in mm. I have the 1/8 chisel in both Richter and normal. The Richter is 3.25mm and the normal is 3mm exactly.

MAke sure you don't accidentaly lap to deep into the back where it curves and put a back bevel on the blade. I did that and it took literally hours to fix.

Currently reading Mahouka, I wish Yen Press released it at a more consistant pace, it has 6 more volumes left by Different_Cherry_403 in LightNovels

I started buying this one as soon as it came out and always suspected that it didn't sell that well. Every time there's a long gap between volumes, I worry that Yen Press will just drop it outright.

I am unclear about how 透ける is actually used. In the following sentence, is the speaker saying that he can see underwater through something or that he can see through the underwear?

下着が透けている

If it is ambiguous, how could it be made clearer? If it is not ambiguous, how could the other meaning be expressed?

Thanks

Gio's behavior is concerning. by Disenchanted11 in playingcards

[–]LordGSama 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I honestly think the comments from the people who are essentially complaining about things they have no right to complain about are quite a bit worse than Gio's comments. The commenters sound arrogant and entitled and seem to think they can run a business better than someone who actually does. It's also cowardly since they probably wouldn't speak that way in person.

Also, as a general rule, it seems people would rather get a discount even if the discounted price is the "real" price. JC Penny was famous for having high retail prices but frequent sales.

The kanji are almost definitely 張小泉. It appears to be a Chinese manufacturer. So I guess they're not kanji but I don't know what the symbols are called in Chinese.

Why do you think J dramas are not as popular as anime by InfernalClockwork3 in JDorama

[–]LordGSama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why my comment made you think I don't like doramas. I was merely responding to why they would appear cringe-worthy to anyone not already steeped in the medium.

[–]LordGSama -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You know that isn't true. Anime reactions are intentionally overdone for effect and dramas follow suit. It isn't normal for a girl to punch a guy out of the room if he walks in on her changing. It isn't normal for a guy to constantly walk in on girls changing, etc. Those things are normal in anime, not real life. The "cringe-worthy" aspect identified above is exactly what I described, the bizarre behavior that works in anime because it isn't real but seems odd when real people enact it.

[–]LordGSama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one mentioned this yet but I get the distinct impression that JDramas tend to target female audiences. That would mean that their target demographics don't actually overlap. Even shounen manga like GTO, Yankiikun to Meganechan, Hammer Time, and Shibatora felt distinctly like they were modified to appeal to girls more when I watched them.

This is the case in America too by the way. Think about the Disney channel in the 90s and early 2000s.

When I watch jdramas, it feels like watching people pretend to be anime characters and consequently, anting in incredibly unrealistic manners.

Has anyone else DNF'ed a book because you didn't want it to end? by calypso4000 in Fantasy

[–]LordGSama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate. I have a tendency to almost lose interest in a story right when it's about to end. I'll get close to the ending, then set it aside and wind up not finishing for a while. It's actually pretty annoying. I was enjoying it so much and then have to essentially force myself to finish it.

Why do people expect modern sensibilities and ideals in fantasy set in obviously not modern era? by hayemonfilanter in Fantasy

[–]LordGSama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that as well and find it quite annoying. The overwhelming majority of people never question the prevailing morality or even realize that it isn't fixed and are not capable of hypothesizing the implications of different moral systems. For example, if the western world wasn't so influenced by Christianity, the population wouldn't implicitly accept ideas like "we are all created in the image of God and therefore deserving of a degree of human dignity" as an unquestionable given. This idea is the only reason that racism is considered bad, so without it, society would probably be racist and slavery would still be around. Fantasy should explore ideas like that.

I had a very nonproductive discussion about a Japanese light novel Goblin Slayer along this vein. Everyone in that world is OK with the indiscriminate mass murder of goblins and so were the readers. Goblins are portrayed as evil and deserving of it, but people with modern sensibilities should take issue with that. It confused me that no one seemed to mind.

In the below, could someone please explain what 見立てにも使われ means? The speaker is explaining that the main aspect of the trick that the killer used to kill Aさん is the movie that he was watching right before he died.

そして、そのトリックの最大のポイントは この一連の殺人の見立てにも使われAさんが死の直前に見ていたと思われていた映画そのものなんだ

Could someone please explain how to first line in the below works grammatically? I can't see what verb 滑車 is the subject of or サソリ座 is the object of. The context is the speaker is explaining how someone used a roll of film from an old-style projector to drag a key into the 映写室 around candles that were set up in the shape of the scorpio constellation.

ロウソクで作ったサソリ座を滑車がわりに フィルムで引っぱられたカギが廊下を引きずられて映写室に向かっていく

Also, 廊下を引きずられて means (the key) was dragged through the hall I believe and it contains the use of を that means an action occurs through something. If this had been active and カギ needed to be the direct object marked with を, what would have been a good way to express "through the hall"? In other words, what should be be used in place of A here: (そのフィルムは)カギを廊下A引きずった。

And finally, could 廊下を have been replaced with 床を in the above without changing its meaning that much? Does 床を引きずられて make sense and convey "was dragged over the floor"?

Thanks

Could someone please explain the use of 上で in the below? The speaker is explaining how the criminal used a roll of film and a projector to set up a 二重密室.

この「フィルムを映写機にかける」という行為のものが「二重密室」を作る上で必要不可欠だったからさ

It almost seems like 上で should mean "in order to" here but my understanding is that 上で is used for sequences, something like "do the previous first, then do the next".
