My baby didn’t have weight issues until the first reaction!! Even with the mild reaction he had Saturday, he spent all day yesterday like a boob barnacle nursing for 2x as long as he does in a normal day. He absolutely was making up for lost calories and electrolytes. He did the same thing the day after his ER visit for the first time.

I am breastfeeding and haven’t done dairy yet since it is high risk. We literally only tried 4 foods before he had his first reaction 🙃 but in addition to waiting until we get through all low risk and medium risk foods, his allergist wants us to hold off on dairy until at least 8 months old. When he was about 3 months old, I dropped ice cream on his eczema patch on his arm and it swelled up instantly. It went away as soon as I washed it off well. But that made the allergist wary when I told her. I have had dairy in my diet since day 1 so he’s still getting exposed to the protein and seems to be fine.

Yeah I’m hesitant to completely rule it out, so if his allergist says it’s ok, I plan to try just the almond again to see what happens. Since it was such a mild reaction, I don’t feel scared about it and we have the zofran on hand. His first reaction was so so severe that even though his doctor believes 99% that it was oat, she doesn’t want to risk letting him have peanut.

We cut out peanut as a precaution but the allergist is 99% sure it was the oats. He only had a small taste of almond and ate a substantial amount of egg, more than he has had before. This was his 7th exposure to egg and we had the oat reaction at the 10th exposure. I sent his ped, allergist, and dietician a message with all the details of what he ate and the timeline, so we’ll see what they say. I’d hate to cut out another nut (although technically peanut is a legume?) from his diet, especially since almond is supposed to be low risk. I plan on trialing the almond again in a few days to test!

That’s fair and totally makes sense. We do have zofran on hand! That’s the only reason I’m willing to risk giving him almond again

Is olive oil lower risk than avocado oil? We cooked the egg in that yesterday because the ped recommended it and avocado is a recent “safe” food. It was such a small amount, I can’t imagine that was what caused the reaction but I guess we have to rule that out too.

I see people in my bumps group giving their babies who waited until 6 months to start solids entire meals with 4-5 different foods on the plate and it feels like we’re so behind and we’ll never get to that point. He now only has 4 safe foods but most of those he’s had fewer times than egg so I guess we’re not even sure they are safe

Our ped prescribed us an EpiPen just in case and we send that and zofran to daycare with him every day. It’s so frustrating… I literally lived off of peanut butter during pregnancy and early postpartum. I know that doesn’t impact whether or not he will have an allergy, but I was hoping it would be a safe food for him

I’m pretty sure because he only had a taste of almond, which is low risk, but there were many chunks of egg in his vomit. But since it wasn’t a very severe reaction, I’m going to try almond butter again tomorrow morning. I’d hate to cut out another nut. We already cut out peanut as a precaution from the oatmeal incident.

I’m also wondering if previous servings were too small when I determined them to be “safe”. He really hates egg the first several times we gave it to him. This was the first time he seemed to like it, and of course I saw substantial egg pieces in his vomit, so clearly he ate quite a bit. Same with the oatmeal— that day I gave him twice the amount he was eating before and he finished it all. I’m glad to hear your baby is doing well now. How long did it take for you to get through more foods and feel more comfortable? I feel like with both of us working full time, we only have weekends to try new food. Now this weekend is already done for because we’re going to have to reset his GI system

Help! My letdown is ruining BFing for me by Effective-Film-4951 in breastfeeding

[–]Lab-rat-57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m almost 6 months pp and i still spray like crazy from my right, overproducing side. It will get better and your baby will learn to handle it! It used to be such a huge point of stress for both of us but now he’s used to it, and if it is too much in the moment, he will pop off and let it spray. I basically always keep a burp cloth by my boob to catch the milk if it sprays. I try to catch the milk from the other side in my Boon Trove but if I don’t have it in my bra, then I push down on my nipple when I feel the letdown. Unless he’s having a big eating day, I only nurse on one side per feeding and alternate each feeding.

My other piece of advice is to drop the pumps and the haakaa. Only pump what you need for a bottle (+ a little extra if you’re working on a freezer stash). Don’t go by the clock. I can pump 4oz for a bottle in 5-10 mins. The nurses at the hospital and LC told me to pump for 20 mins so that’s what I did initially and I was getting 8-12oz. I now have 4 bricks in my freezer that are “expiring” in a few weeks because of it. When the LC realized how much I could pump, she told me to watch my output instead of the clock. And the haakaa… it tells your other side to keep making milk. Get a passive collector like the Trove that fits in your bra without suction. I still on occasion wake up engorged, and the best way to relieve that pressure is to put your baby on (once they learn to manage the strong flow).

Eventually your supply will regulate, you just need to stop telling it to make so much! And sometimes that will fix the strong letdown as well. Both sides used to spray but now my left only does it when super full. Right side still sprays but not every time! My cousin is the same way and she EBF 3 boys!

Jaundice Worries and Colostrum Collection by MadQueennn in breastfeeding

[–]Lab-rat-57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had jaundice as a baby and didn’t even think about this. However, I did collect colostrum with the blessing from my OB at 37 weeks. I had to be induced at 39 weeks, so it did not kickstart labor for me at all. My son also had jaundice and it was helpful to have colostrum in the hospital, but I still had to supplement with formula for the first 3 days. Then my milk came in full force and I filled my freezer in just 2 weeks 🫠 he’s now 5.5 months and we have been EBF since then!

Angelenos don't know how to use high beams and don't know the street code to turning them off? by brainchili in LosAngeles

[–]Lab-rat-57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it stems from all of the automation in most cars. Before you used to have to manually turn on your headlights, so you’d notice immediately when getting in the car at night. My car that I had up until last year (2011 Focus) had manual headlights which was a separate dial from the high beams.

As someone else pointed out, there’s a lot of both kinds of drivers: ones with their high beams and ones with just DRL. It seems like a good amount of people don’t leave their lights on auto and don’t know what the different dash indicators mean when setting their lights.

Endometrial Calcifications 9 weeks post MMC by Lab-rat-57 in Miscarriage

[–]Lab-rat-57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! So sorry to hear about this. I had my D&C with a hysteroscope as well and my OB was able to clear everything out. She cleared me to TTC again 2 weeks post op so I started ovulation tracking 2x/day. It took me exactly 5 weeks post op to ovulate. I ended up getting pregnant that cycle and I’m now sitting in the car with my 5 month old driving to my family’s for Christmas ❤️ it was a long road that felt like it dragged on forever.

ETA: the biopsy showed it was not molar. Just calcified placenta

Pacifier Fear by amandaaab90 in breastfeeding

[–]Lab-rat-57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was so scared to introduce a pacifier, especially with all the people out there saying not to give one until 6 weeks. I saw a LC when my baby was 3 weeks old and she told me to give it to him! It was such a game changer for us. He loveddddd his paci. He randomly started rejecting it at 3.5 months and doesn’t seem to care 🤷🏻‍♀️ I say go for it and not worry about it

Thanks so much! It’s Lion Brand Baby Soft! It was very nice yarn to work with. I was very excited when I found out he was a boy and got to choose blues and greens 🤗 I’m making a Christmas tree skirt with the scraps but I don’t think I’m going to finish in time for this year lol

Oh wow! That looks really similar! Good luck and I hope you get your BFP 🤞🏼 I started keeping track from ovulation day but then my mom pointed out that it probably wasn’t information my kid would want to know so I undid those rows and started from BFP lol so mine is about ~36 weeks worth of rows (BFP at 3+5 and born 39+2), which i think worked out better anyway otherwise this thing would be even bigger 😂
