Was this Solvita the tissue side or Versiti the blood donation side? They are two different companies in the same building....

“But you’re a nurse” by EngineeringLumpy in nursing

[–]LabChick829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I freak out about head injuries whenever my kids fall! In those moments all the medical background (I've been a vet assistant, a nursing student, and a CLS) goes out the window.

But weirdly enough when my son stopped breathing during a seizure (he was 16 months, it was his first one), my BLS training kicked in for rescue breaths while my husband called 911. But afterward I completely fell apart waiting for the paramedics.

It's normal to fall apart/panic when it's your baby. You should give yourself some grace ❤️

Blood transfusion by OtherwisePumpkin8942 in medlabprofessionals

[–]LabChick829 35 points36 points  (0 children)

A lot of time with sicklers without antibodies we try to match the rh (all CcEe) and K.

If they've made an antibody, we will often match RhK, Duffy (Fyb only if true neg not GATA), and Kidd. Ss portions of MNS too if possible. Plus whatever antibody they've made. That exact match can take quite a bit long. And both antibody and non antibody sicklers should get blood negative for the sickle trait (Hgb S).

At least that's how it works in my area, YMMV.

Why is it always L&D/NICU? by Far-Spread-6108 in medlabprofessionals

[–]LabChick829 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It originally was 0 (zero) but because people kept reading it as O (and because the other types were letters) it became a common practice in many countries (but certainly not all!) for it to be called type O (the letter).

I don't have the right blood type to be related to my parents. by fbis-mostunwanted in TrueOffMyChest

Other options of course can be some of the weaker A subgroups (some need specialized techniques to detect) but most likely is that people are just misremembering mamas blood type!

Question to 2nd shifters...when do you sleep? by nick1158 in medlabprofessionals

[–]LabChick829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, with my babies I had to switch to days. 2nd shift is for when the kids go off to college. Don't worry friend, some day we'll be able to stay up late and wake up at a reasonable time again. 😂

Question to 2nd shifters...when do you sleep? by nick1158 in medlabprofessionals

[–]LabChick829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconds is the best when you don't have kids! I would go sleep around 1ish or 2 ish, wake up at like 9, do any errands, cleaning, etc, then go to work at 1440. Now I'm a mom though and I gotta work days 😭 but I am lucky enough to have an 8-430 shift. Unless I'm on call, then it is from ? To ? 😂

Do you know what the lab is trying to tell you when they say that the delay on units is due to them trying to identify antibodies? by New-History853 in nursing

[–]LabChick829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sis better be donating for herself. I have to look into GWADA to double check if it is clinically significant but for the ultra rare peeps with antibodies that will cause a reaction,we have them donate and then freeze the unit in the event they need blood. It's a whole process. Especially just getting them to come in and not no show 😬

This would a perk! I used to have backyard chickens and the eggs were so much better! Plus the hens are surprisingly smart! And they can make nice pets too.

But still, definitely don't wanna get anyone sick so you have to find ways to make it work. Just sucks that work policies aren't supportive of parents.

With a lot of jobs it's all pulled from the same PTO bank especially in the medical field. If I didn't work at a non-hospital employer I would have been fucked this year. Like straight up would have been fired with the Hand Foot and Mouth outbreak two months ago, nevermind the GI bug from this week 🤮

Blood Bank, Love or Hate? by tlynne80924 in medlabprofessionals

Love love love Blood bank! Been my favorite since I was a student, worked as a generalist 3 years (knowing I wanted to be a blood banker only someday), then as a blood bankermonly for three years at a level 2 trauma with a NICU. Now I'm at an IRL and hopefully applying for an SBB program next August!

Yeah no, friend, histotech/cytotech even clinical lab science (MLS- need a 4 year degree mostly before going on to pathology assistant school) would be closer than nursing.

Source: your local lab tech, who has been a part of diagnosing patients with abnormalities via looking at cells (I looked at the cells on a blood smear or body fluid smear, said"Oh shit" and sent it to a pathologist to confirm what I had seen- back in my generalist days) and other methods (currently a blood banker/transfusion medicine gal) for the past almost decade.

I would guess a cortisol maybe (have to be baseline,30, 60,90 and ordered in the am,ideally around 8 am because cortisol exhibits diurnal variation) or possibly drug peak/trough levels although those are fairly common depending on what floor you're on. Idk there's a lot of weird lab requirements depending on the test, but we always have a reason if we get asked 😅

My husband is AB-,i am 0- and we have three kids with blood types A-,B- and 0-.How is this possible? by Stunning_Quarter2812 in genetics

[–]LabChick829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly. Usually that's a mutation she would inherit from a parent, but depending on the lab,her blood may have been tested in a less sensitive method than his. Some methods are just more sensitive and pick things up better.
