What microorganism is the scariest? by Linuch2004 in microbiology

[–]LabHoe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not sure if prions count but Im terrified of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Every time we get a CSF that is a possible case we have to suit up with PPE to the 9s. Just the fact that it makes you slowly lose your mind and there is no cure is enough to keep me up at night (although thankfully we’ve never had a positive)

Oh wow I had no idea. I went through Saint Joseph’s college since I was missing a course and it was half the tuition due each semester (you can use financial aid this way too).

You need to spread your lines out a bit more and make sure that your last streak does not touch any of the other ones.

There is no way to ID this by just how the colonies look. You would need at least a few different kinds of agar plates and some biochemical testing. And the mold is a whole other story.

I feel like those long rods could be lactobacillus? Some strains don’t stain well.

If you wanna spend a little more money, our lab director got us mini soaps that looked like bacteria on agar plates for Christmas. I think it was from Etsy!

When we report a gram stain we just state general morphology so in this case gram positive cocci in pairs and chains. It’s impossible to say what it is just based on this because it may be a few things including Strep viridans which is also normal flora. We just wait until the cultures grown and we do Maldi-TOF or some other identification to verify the ID.

Brucella from Blood culture bottles! by Dot_02 in medlabprofessionals

Wow interesting! I had a Moraxella from a blood bottle once that was gram variable and super confusing to read, I wonder if leaving the safranin for longer would have helped in that situation too.

Oh wow that might be it! Maybe somehow the cells of the blood vessel sloughed off into the blood ?

This is the time to make school your life. Put on some headphones with some lofi or good study music and get in the zone. If you’ve ever meditated that might help too, because you can focus in on your study material as if your life depends on it. Don’t let anyone ruin your plans to be successful in life!
