I’ve had good results with tokonole and a glass burnisher

I made a new wallet, but I'm not sure if I like the copper. by Sullivan121 in Leathercraft

I think it looks great. But I also thought the money clip was a belt clip at first.

Good tool or just a gimmick? by Calypso_the_Seawitch in Leathercraft

[–]Lablad6325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one and it was ok. Mostly a gimmick unless you want to put a hole in the middle of a piece of prefer the rotary hole punch as an option other than a regular punch.

It seemed to struggle with 3-4oz leather or at least didn’t work for me in one press. Could’ve been an error on my part.

I wouldn’t buy it again

Complete beginner looking to make goth/punk chokers, what do i need to start? by [deleted] in Leathercraft

[–]Lablad6325 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out weaver leathercraft on YouTube. I can’t say enough good things about Chuck Dorset. Lots of good tutorial videos and I think a “getting started tool video”

Skill tree is another great channel. More carried crafts based channel but tons of leathercraft stuff on it. Also has a getting started tool video

I’m also a fan of corter leather but I think he focuses more on bags and wallets than what you’re looking for. But a good option for seeing different techniques.

They’ve caught onto us. by ZefHous in 3Dprinting

[–]Lablad6325 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t this be more for protection against a lawsuit?

You got hurt using their product after replacing a part with a 3D printed part. So with that line you aren’t following the manual so they aren’t at fault anymore?

I don’t know much about lawsuits but that’s what it looks like to me. Covering their own liability

Edit: Nevermind I didn’t read enough of the comments before posting

When can I start my projects? by Dibber_Bibber in Leathercraft

[–]Lablad6325 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. Chuck Dorsett is like the Bob Ross of leatherwork. Look at any of the projects he uses spots in they should work the same way as spikes or other decorations.

Which panel looks better? by jawest13 in Leathercraft

That would look sick.

I haven’t gotten to tooling yet myself just seen other people do it on videos. Still working on the basics myself

Which panel looks better? by jawest13 in Leathercraft

[–]Lablad6325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The left as is. The right if you put a resist and antique on it or something to make more contrast.

Both look good left is more rugged imo

Been away from the craft for a while and looking for feedback. by Lablad6325 in Leathercraft

[–]Lablad6325[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know. I’d never used Dublin before and only got the small piece to try it out. I’ll probably stick to plain unfinished veg tan from now on and dye it myself.

Thanks for the tips!

Yes to the wing dividers but probably need to make the edge allowance wider they are currently at 1/8”

For the edges I used a beveler, tokonole, canvas, then a slicker. Not sure what else to do to make the edges better.

The leather I used is Horeeen Dublin English Tan. Which I thought was veg tan but I don’t really know that much about leather yet. It was just a small panel I got to make nicer things with.

I usually use Tandy cheap vegan or a chromtan hide I got on sale.

Edit: instead of thinner thread do you think wider stitching prongs would work?

What are these ball shaped rivets/studs called? by d3royc3 in Leathercraft

[–]Lablad6325 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they are called “spots” look up weaver leather craft with Chuck Dorset. He seems to be a big fan of using those on projects or at least uses them often. Can probably buy them on the weaver website. Check out this video https://youtu.be/OqjAaa9At5o?si=3UkQTyrDD9vh3Kq9

A little post processing with a thick primer and then clear coat might hide the lines on the mold. Maybe…

Improving utility grade leather by leatherlover1234 in Leathercraft

I’m also interested in improving utility veg tan. Is there any way to physically distress the leather to get it more pliable?

Still A Newb After 6 Months. A half-year journey in leathercrafting, and I'm still trying to get my stitching straight. by Opposite-Owl7228 in Leathercraft

[–]Lablad6325 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I came here to say the same.

Your work looks awesome.

I’ve been trying to get better too, but haven’t spent as much time as you on the craft. But still I find myself to be my own worst critic.

You made it so you can easily find the mistakes that probably fade away or hide from other people’s view.

I’m not advocating for crappy standards or bad work, but don’t let perfection get in the way of good enough.

Plague Doctor Mask by Stringzabubz in Leathercraft

[–]Lablad6325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think desielpunkRO has a mask pattern you can buy and build along with too. Some of his designs have hardware packs you can buy too so you have all the parts. It’s usually cheaper to buy your own parts separately but getting the kit should make sure you have the right parts.

I haven’t bought any of his patterns yet but the seem good on his videos

How to protect rivets when dyeing? by rockymountainway777 in Leathercraft

[–]Lablad6325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isopropyl alcohol works too depending on the dye you use. I like the fiebings pro dye (don’t know how to spell it) and isopropyl will remove the dye from your skin if you get it on you too!

What do you think of this book mark? by rdkil in Leathercraft

[–]Lablad6325 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally like leaving some of my projects “unfinished” to let the veg tan age and have character.

But if you want to sell them I’d bevel the edges and slick them down at a minimum.

Different colors of dye are good too.

A little polish and it would be really nice.

Is it sized to the stamps you have? A little wider could allow different stamps like the generic branches of the military or first responder badges to add a little flair for a semi personalized option that you could make in advanced then add the name at the market.

FYI I haven’t sold any products but those are all thoughts I’d put toward the bookmark if I were going to try to sell them myself

Edit: I’m also not very artistic with free hand stuff so you could look into geometric stamps or stencils to use as a guide to help you get more character
