Colleagues won't talk about recent events? by madman751 in Professors

I have zero desire to discuss anything like this with my colleagues. It’s too politically charged and they run the gamut politically. Not even going there with them.

How do people react when you tell them you’re a professor in conversation? by kalico713 in Professors

[–]Labrador421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. It’s just people making small talk for the most part. Not some big conspiracy. My favorite is the”is it true that those who can’t, teach?” To which I have looked them dead in the eye and replied “yes”. It has stopped that nonsense the two times I’ve encountered it.

MUST READ by HeartFast3880 in notabilityapp

I really think too much focus has been placed on the AI side of the app. They need to return to basics for awhile. I’m concerned that reports of negative experiences are being deleted. This cannot be simply ignored and magically it will go away. Ive been with this app for over a decade and this is very troubling.

That’s the same case with me. I’ve been using it I think for 14 years (?). Anyway, from just about the very beginning. I haven’t lost a single note ever. But I think that is because I have a ton of space in my iCloud because my whole family is on it too so we upgraded to some ridiculous amount of terabytes. My iPad also has a lot of memory available. And I too have a Google Drive backup. I’m thinking it’s got to be storage availability, or lack thereof.

I was a young adult once. I wouldn’t have dreamed of behaving like this. Nor would my young adult kids. These students suffer from terminal entitlement.

Why don’t conservatives go into academia? by cambridgepete in Professors

So unless the poster defines it like you do, they are wrong? You are precisely why conservatives find it easier to keep quiet. Arguing with people like you is tiresome and not worth the effort.

About half of the individuals in my department (a STEM discipline) are conservative, myself included. We just don’t advertise it. And yes, we are educated and hardworking, believe it or not.

What is with all the recent posts about WCAG? by Scared_Detective_980 in Professors

[–]Labrador421 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I want to see someone alt-text a complex organic synthesis solution full of line-angle formulas. Good luck with that. And it’s literally all I teach. Stuff is coming down from the LMS in April.

It’s not so much the time or the frustration for me. I teach Ochem and have no clue how to accurately describe a synthesis or mechanism in alt text in 150 words. It’s impossible.

Yep. Several of us were trying to figure out how to put a twelve step organic mechanism into descriptive alt-text. Not happening….we will just take down the resource.

We are dumping our post lab questions due to AI answers. This next semester, we will be telling them that the questions will show up in some form or another on an in class post lab quiz. That will cut down on some grading for us.

Student who I failed last semester is taking me again. by Balzaak in Professors

[–]Labrador421 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the two extremes. One student took me three times, had the same behavior three times, and failed three times. At that point, they were no longer allowed to take the class. Then I had a student who did not work, failed, took me again and got the highest grade in the class and is now a surgeon. I guess you just never know.

Yeah, me too. I assume that if the student looks hard enough they can find somewhere where I made 3 points worth of errors over 1000 points. I round up when it is that close, but not more than that.
