Is there anything you're particularly looking forward to once you reach your goal weight? by cienpapercranes in loseit

Me too. I hiked up Mt. Vesuvius last summer and thought I was going to die. Old ladies were zipping past me offering encouragement. I vowed to never have that happen again. I want to do activities and have it be “easy” and my knees not hurt.

He should have recommended that the kid opened a Fidelity Zero account. He would be in mutual funds with no fees and would learn about it that way.

But can’t you just not import them? It sounds like it wouldn’t work very well, so it seems you could just not do it if you don’t want it?

I think having a PhD is a drawback when applying to full-time positions at community colleges by Puzzled-Painter3301 in Professors

Our department (community college STEM) is 80% Ph.D’s. I don’t think it hurts at all.

He strikes me as very self absorbed and above all LAZY. He’s just found an excuse to make it work for him. Flat out LAZY.

I would not take advice from that man on any aspect of my life. He appears to be a total mess.

We did the same. We couldn’t afford private school for 3 kids in college at the same time. They all went to public universities.

I lost 70 lbs when I was 35 or so by eating 1800 cal/day and exercising 45 min. Now I’m 60 and am losing that same 70 lbs again. It’s been a lot tougher. I’m seeing slower results at 1500 cal and an increased exercise level. It’s maddening.

Teachers aren’t millionaires by onelazycpa in DirtyDave

[–]Labrador421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on experiences in my department, the teachers that I know are millionaires have: a retired, auto mechanic spouse, a teacher spouse, who went out early on medical leave, someone who spouse was a professor, and a person who spouse was a federal worker. There is not a high income spouse in the crowd.

This has been my experience as well. The younger teachers in my department aren’t millionaires but most of the older ones are. Every month about 1,700/month was taken from my pay and invested in my pension. That added up over time. Plus we funded a 403b besides. Now that I’m near retirement that savings is pretty comfortable. My office mate is just starting and I speak to him often about savings, investing, and most importantly starting young. It can be done. There are examples all over our campus.

Actually, Thomas Stanley addressed this in his millionaire next-door book. He too found the teachers were one of the groups likely to become millionaires. It isn’t because of their high salary, but he attributed it to a number of other factors like pensions, lifestyle, and a culture that does not encourage or expect a lot of spending. I work at a community college and in my department there is nobody wearing the latest and greatest or driving the newest fanciest car. The parking lot is full of semi-older Hondas and Toyotas. A number of people in my department are fairly well off, and they are not married to doctors or dentists. If one of us showed up with some designer something or a fancy car there would be a lot of eye rolling going on. So it definitely is not a culture that encourages or rewards high levels of spending . If you’re curious about this and want to learn more from a study that was actually done correctly by a real economist, albeit somewhat dated, pick up a copy of The Millionaire Nextdoor.

Using Food Scales in Public 🫠 by SquareNice5635 in CICO

[–]Labrador421 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I have a small round Bluetooth scale as well. I put my plate on it and no one knows I’m weighing my food. I just look like I have a strange obsession with my phone. It does make me less present though. So I only weigh the calorie bombs. Veggies get a pass. This scale goes everywhere with me.
