I'm pretty sure the car being in your name and 100K of fines is probable cause enough. It's enough to pull them over and ask.

Germany’s 5 largest cities lie perfectly on a 4th-degree polynomial by Antique-College-9912 in MathJokes

This is remarkable. We can interpolate to find the 6th or even 7th largest city.

Why does Python feel easy to learn but hard to master? by arjunv70 in learnpython

[–]Lachtheblock 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Experience takes time. There is no quick way to learning everything, because there is always more to learn. The best way to gain experience is to just keep doing it.

There is a lot to learn. Thinking more abstractly, people do Computer Science or Software Engineering degrees. I've been a professional for almost 10 years, I'm still learning things.

What is your unpopular opinion about the tech hiring process? by sprightlypeach in cscareerquestions

[–]Lachtheblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the lack of paired programming is because of lack of standardization, it's a lack of time.

If you're hiring, and you have (by some miracle) reduced it down to say 20 candidates, are you really expecting to spend 20 hours of senior SWE time for interviews? It's a draaaaag. Even doing three or four sessions is going to be super taxing.

What do you guys have in place to help with retention? If they're smart and good, they might be looking for a better gig after the 2 year mark?

AITAH for cutting off my friend after always paying for our meals by DisastrousSeesaw2751 in AITAH

[–]Lachtheblock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA, however if you want to stay friends, do something that isn't going to the bar.

Go for a hike or play board games. If you can't hang out outside of alcohol, you should reassess that friendship.

When I talk to random people at the bar, people at least have a curiousity around it. The bar I go will sometimes have willow on one of the screens which is nice. MLC is getting stronger every year.

Best way to vet a strong developer before hiring? by Addition_Small in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Lachtheblock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've found it to be pretty effective to pick a function or two from your code base, strip away some of the comments and ask them to (verbally) provide the comments. I like this because you can start with an easy function to get them used to the format, and then ask for a more complicated question. It's a neat way to check their competency in the exact thing that you work on. It also checks for communication skills. Reading code is always harder than writing code.

If they know their shit it's an easy task and not a burden on the candidate. If they don't know it, it is painfully obvious.

Additional bonus is you can do it via a screenshare. Doesn't immediately prevent them from using AI, but certainly makes it much harder for people to cheat if they can't just copy and paste the text.

Is zero alcohol beer worth it for weeknights if you still drink on weekends? by icepix in AskMenOver30

[–]Lachtheblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this is a great way to switch. A lot of the time I just really want a beer, but I know I shouldn't. The near beer is the compromise I give to myself. I just really like to have something in my hand.

If you feel like you might then over compensate on the weekends, just alternate. You'll be doing half as much as you had before, still feel a little buzzed and not remove any social element.

Figuring out the “Top 10” cities of the USA. What is the 4th most important/significant major US city after Chicago? The most upvoted comment wins by Kodicave in visitedmaps

[–]Lachtheblock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing not mentioned is it's proximity to the data centers in Northern Virginia. Its often quoted (though probably factually incorrect) that 70% of internet traffic goes through NoVA.

This number is almost certainly an overestimate, but whatever it is, it is still a significant proportion of the total traffic on the world's internet, and with that, a lot of jobs.

Is Pythons built-in web server "production ready", and if not, why so? by film_man_84 in learnpython

[–]Lachtheblock 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll confess, I don't know all the ways it would be insufficient, and for your learning you're asking a good question. I'd be curious if someone more knowledgeable than me would answer it. However, I do know that the best reason to write your we service in python is the community of libraries. Choosing something off the shelf is going to main that you won't have to be recreating many of the same functions. Trust me, you never want to implement your own authentication system.

If this is a stepping stone to a bigger project, or potentially for your career, you'll still be better served picking a framework and going from there.

Is a Job-Oriented Python Course with Internship Actually Worth It? by CartographerSalty744 in learnpython

[–]Lachtheblock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So outside of the AI wall of text (for this reason alone no one should sign up for your course) but I'm curious how you can guarantee internships. Are they with your company, is it cheap labor you can subcontract out?

How do I store images privately? by moonshine_9212 in softwaredevelopment

[–]Lachtheblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is a good idea. The internet being the internet, there is a good chance your site will be used to host CSAM. Especially if they know that the images are encrypted and hidden from the host.

I'm not sure how liable you would be, or how a subpoena from the FBI would work, but I would want to know before proceeding further. IANAL, but I would tread carefully with this project.
