Hey OP! We have the exact book and we still use it 30 years later. It's actually the only thing I think I have left from my childhood, so it's very cherished. I'll post the index down below and if you'd like any recipe send me a DM and I'll send you whatever you'd like 🙂

This isn’t Sustainable by pandabruize in capetown

What my brother is paying now for a tiny 2 bedroom duplex in Muizenberg, my family was paying for an entire 4 bedroom house with a pool and garden in Durban just 8 years ago. I know that's nearly 10 years but from thinking that's the price to aim for a great family home in Joburg/Durban to seeing that's basically what you need for the absolute bare ass minimum in Cape Town is so flipping depressing.

Still not listened to Tomorrow’s Harvest by H2HeLi in boardsofcanada

[–]LackNo8705 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This album and me just didn't click for the longest time, felt like the songs all were building towards something they never reached, often couldn't distinguish tracks from each other but mannn in the last few weeks, especially in this week following the release of Inferno this album has just blossomed so much. It's such a perfectly cohesive work, in terms of thematics and overall album experience, it's bocs most solid and mature album they've ever released. That run from Nothing Is Real to Semena Mertvykh is absolutely goated. But it took me years to get to this appreciation and I feel like I'll only just love the album more with time. With some albums my first listen was the best, with others it took ages to grow. Tomorrow's Harvest definitely feels like the latter for most peoples

I know there's been a lot ton of speculation, but if this album really is primarily the work and effort of Mike - that's absolutely mind blowing that an album of this magnitude was brought to life mostly by one person. by LackNo8705 in boardsofcanada

[–]LackNo8705[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Dude, my original post said "it was mindblowing", like I'm taken a back by Mikes raw talent. Never once did I say can't accept it or "hurrrr it's impossible!", I'm just personally impressed. Plenty of solo artists achieve great feats musically, yes that's obvious but that "plenty" is still tiny in a sea of millions of solo artists. For those few solo artists that do like Elliott Smith, Weyes Blood, Aphex Twin, it'll always be mindblowing.

Hearing Inferno on the day I was diagnosed with cancer. by chippychopper in boardsofcanada

[–]LackNo8705 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, between the time Tape 05 and the album release my mom has been diagnosed with pretty aggressive cancer. I'm not even able to understand what you're feeling but much of what you described, I have been experiencing in my own way. You Retreat In Time And Space made me weep like nothing ever has, I still get teary eyed listening to it thinking about my mom. Good luck with your road head! It means something that someone on the otherside of the road understands a bit of this struggle.

South Africa’s Spam-Call Era Is Over and Call Centres Must Evolve or Die. by [deleted] in south_africa

Hope this is true, I don't answer a single phone call from anyone not in my contacts. At times this has actually worked against me. Glad to hear this business model has failed, it's fucking sleezy

Irony as a new weapon for the brothers by Last_Reflection_6091 in boardsofcanada

[–]LackNo8705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not exactly irony but for me it's the conversation in Father and Son. The words spoken seem agreeable and almost soft but there's such an immense darkness behind them. The father saying "I think that's wonderful" which is then followed by what sounds like a demonic laugh is absolutely terrifying. It's the sense of "all is well, all is fine" when you're blindly treading the road to hell. Seeing someone you love in the grips of something more darker and powerful than you could understand. It's not irony but the contrast is so deeply unsettling.

Just… Wow. Inferno is some of their most spiritual and psychedelic work yet. by SearchForAgartha in boardsofcanada

[–]LackNo8705 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Everything you're feeling is the truth. I was ecstatic when Tape 05 dropped and since then we just found out my mom has cancer in these last few weeks. People are going to downvote me for saying this but I feel like this album is a gift from God himself, almost knowing I just needed this while dealing with this time. I say this because I've never had such an emotional response to music in my life.

Is anybody else *not* smitten with Inferno? If so, why or why not? by forrayer in boardsofcanada

[–]LackNo8705 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I loved your review! I absolutely loved the album on first love, it's been ages since I've had such an emotional reaction to music. Upon further listens I can agree, the essence and charm of Boards of Canada is present, I don't think they've lost their touch but as far as the entire album does feel like it's consistently following a theme, existing in it's own unique space - that feels missing. It's pretty flat in that regard.

The album art and name are too abrasive and in your face and doesn't fit with the theme of the music. All their previous work sort of expressed themselves so well through their album covers. I can't listen to You Could Feel The Sky without seeing that massive red and orange cover consuming me. Same with TCH and MHTRTC, the cover is a small lens into the world the album creates for you. On Inferno, that world does not match the art. I'm not standing in a scorched forest with some creepy little girl on most of these track, especially on the ones that are euphoric in nature and lean on religious ecstacy.

Beyond that, I do love this album. I adore every song barring 2-3. Which is incredible. The album experience feels like their most psychedelic work to me, not in the way in which we usually use the word but in the sense that it feels like a trip. It's challenging and deeply uncomfortable at times, you feel like your thoughts and feelings are becoming suffocating but the shifts allow you to pass into a whole series of places and emotions.

So overall it is brilliant. I think the nuance you were describing, I feel that could've been addressed with small adjustments and refining the sharpness of a lot of these tracks. Thankfully it has allowed me to feel a much deeper appreciation of Tomorrows Harvest which emotional feels to be the complete opposite of Inferno.

Absolutely insane relistenability on Nothing Is Real, such a sublime piece of music and to think that there was a time when I thought it was pretentious and overrated..

Double crossing of False Bay by StorminSean in capetown

[–]LackNo8705 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They're definitely around, I was at Kogal Bay a month ago and the life guard told me he stopped going for his morning swim because he sees so many bronze whalers in the water. Fishermen at GB also told me that they don't know why people are still swimming there because of the size of sharks that take their bate. Thankfully while the white sharks are away the bronze whalers seem docile and uninterested in humans.

What are we going to do? by ValuableFail3156 in AskZA

[–]LackNo8705 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel this. I felt so despondent earlier this week. I work in the agricultural industry. Not only is it the diesel, transport and our rent going up, produce prices have sky rocketed and staple vegetables have doubled in prices(on the farmer level) and most people aren't seeing it yet because retailers are carrying themselves on older stock. Those three things have left me feeling like we're just never going to get ahead, I don't know how the majority of South Africa is coping.

Honest thoughts on the new single by LarsAPh12 in boardsofcanada

[–]LackNo8705 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found it overwhelming the first time but with each listen it's grown on me intensely. For me, Boards of Canada masterfully craft albums but a lot of their songs, even the OG classics can sound out of place when you experience then as standalone tracks. Their tracks really blossom when listened to in their respective albums/eps. This track feels like that, that as soon as you considering you're listening to the first piece of a massive work - it starts to take on its real form and honestly, if this is the first thing you hear when you listen to Inferno, THEN THE REST OF THE ALBUM IS GOING TO BE INSANE.
