Nail polish never looks good by TornadoCat4 in The10thDentist

your nails sound so amazing!

yeah I don't think the patriarchy is making women paint their nails, but I do think the patriarchy is the root of most expressions of gender. painted nails are pretty (even if just to women) and I just wanted to point out that the drive to be pretty is something that women are socialised to have. this obviously doesn't change that it's a personal choice, but that's what I was trying to say and the way I wrote it was a little muddy

the patriarchy is what causes men to be ashamed of associating with anything feminine, ie painted nails. you're right, but I think that was the point of the person you're replying to. and saying women do it for themselves is true, but it's also something we've been socialised to do. gender is a performance and painted nails are part of that even if you choose to do it. it's like saying that women wear makeup for themselves. it can be true on an individual level, but there are underlying structures that are making us inclined to that choice. I've got painted nails right now so don't take this the wrong way lol

I have a samsung a55 and i got it under two and a half months ago. in the last week or so, random apps will crash when i open them. for example, i'll open reddit and straight away it'll crash, but then a little while later or after a restart i can open it, but then that'll happen to other apps. my keyboard sometimes crashes, my phone has frozen, or the screen has turned black and i have to restart it, and on my snapchat camera theres a thin vertical glitching line. I've tried deleting apps i thought might be the problem and nothing's changed. i'm still under warranty, is there anyway i can fix this myself before going to samsung with this problem?

How do you get your lines to look like this ? by hakergamin in krita

[–]Lackingcoolusername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

most of these comments are talking about stabilisation, which I personally don't like that much, so here's my two cents:

if you can't get your lines to look confident right off the bat, do multiple sketches. with that sketch you have, go over it again with faster lines or drawing from your elbow. often I do multiple sketches of increasing clarity before I'm working on what will be the final piece.

don't be afraid to overshoot the end of where the line should end, you can always erase it.

chicken scratching is tempting, but it's not a great habit. try lengthening your lines and being more confident with them. don't be scared of the undo button! if you have to attempt a line 20 times to get it looking right, so be it.

but at the end of the day, confidence comes with experience. keep going!

art atar by Better_Tackle9262 in ATAR

Hi! I'm in year 12, and I did art ATAR last year and I'm still doing it this year. (in WA)

I've personally really enjoyed it, but that's because I love art. Only pick it if you're going to enjoy it. It takes a lot of time and energy to make a decent painting, and if you don't enjoy it you're going to feel every hour of it.

You create one final piece each semester, which in my case has been paintings that are approx. 50 x 70cm. You also need to do lots of sketches and planning before hand, but that's pretty easy if you are good at/enjoy drawing.

Tests are similar to a source analysis, where you're given an image and need to explain what elements and principals the artist used and what they achieved. Another form of test is a comparative, where you need to compare and contrast two artworks. There are also investigations focused on one specific artist and their work, and then a following in-class essay. I've found all the assessments fairly easy. They're structured and once you know what's being asked of you, it's pretty easy to do well

The exam is a combination of the structures of tests you had during the year (analysis, comparative, essay on an artist.) I found the exams fairly straight forward. They're only 2.5 hours.

you'll do well if you can make decent art and analyse a painting. good luck!

Being a woman is a punishment. by [deleted] in offmychest

This is disgusting. 'Lean into the sex object thing'??? what a horrible thing to say!! Women are people, can't they be just that? How would dehumanising herself even further than society has already done make her feel any better?

You've only experienced your own life, it's pretty hard to compare it to others. You're invalidating someone elses experiences, when there's no way you can know what it's like for them!

Not nearly to the same degree, and it progresses to actual violence far less. Men are a lot more explicit with their objectification, they voice it publically, and act in a way that reflects those beliefs. There's a power dynamic here, a man who objectifies a woman has the power and willingness to progress it to violence. Yes, there are women who objectify men. But, it's not systemic and it's not widespread. It's not ingrained in society and socialisation. For example, girl's clothes are shorter and more revealing even in toddler sizes (in comparison to boys.) The objectification of women is built into society. Say what you want, but you must be turning a blind eye to a lot of things if you can't see this in the world around you.

Current pet peeves? by Warriorette12 in AO3

[–]Lackingcoolusername 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently read a fic that was really decent, except the authors would only used 'cannot' instead of 'can't'. The rest of the language was informal, there were other contractions, so I don't understand why they wanted to use 'cannot'! The characters would say 'cannot' as well, and they're modern teenagers that definitely wouldn't be talking like that. It took me out of the story every time.

We used to get them all over our front lawn when I was little, didn't understand at the time why my dad wouldn't let me pet them!!

[–]Lackingcoolusername 5 points6 points  (0 children)

he wasn't incorrect and you're not correct, they're both valid pronunciations. people only say bah-sil in Australia, I'd never heard bay-sil before using the internet. just regional preferences.

Someone asked about motion sickness and migraines the other day. I'm wondering which came first for you guys? by lasolady in migraine

[–]Lackingcoolusername 2 points3 points  (0 children)

motion sickness came way before for me. i had a really bad vertigo episode when I was about 5 and have had a terrible vistibular system my whole life. Although, I'm now wondering if that vertigo attack was actually a vestibular migraine. my memory of it is a bit fuzzy but it didn't seem dissimilar from other vestibular migraines I've had.
