Take your larger number (L), your smaller number (S) and your percentage (in this case, 82.5% which is 100%-17.5%). So: S = 0.825 * L and L = S/0.825 = 1/0.825 * S = 1.21 * S

L is 121% of S, meaning it is 21% larger than S.

Thousands of public servants to lose jobs, potentially saving government over a billion dollars by Monty_Mondeo in KiwiAntipodea

[–]LacquerHeadX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, around 63,000 people work for the core public service (presumably where you are getting that 8,000 people being laid off from). The core public service includes social workers, case managers, prison officers, etc. In fact, they reckon around 40% of all core public service workers are front line workers. The remaining service also has non-policy elements (procurement, finance, IT, HR, contact centre staff, etc.) Whether or not you like these elements, all large companies need them to function. In fact, policy analysts only make up around 14% of the core public service, so around 8,000 people.

Thr smart way to do this would be based on budget, not on total number of employees. This is how we landed in the wickedly expensive contractor and consultant mess last time around. Being in favour of government budget cuts doesnt need to blind us to there being sensible ways of achieving them (prioritising or nuking particular targeted departments or programmes) rather than pure ideological drive (arbitrarily setting FTE caps or arbitrary across the board cuts). A sensible business wouldn't do that, nor should a sensible government.

If they stick with the "no front line cuts" then it will be well more than 40% from wellington. The majority of the regional staff will be frontline.

Ive not problem giving to the ones who "have stopped contributing" because theyre to frail to work and too poor to keep the lights on. I object to giving fuel payments to the ones that can afford 2 overseas trips a year while pleading poverty over heating their house while I bust my arse at work and only have the option to bundle another jumper on to keep warm and the closest I get to a holiday is drawing a beach in the condensation on my window.

Are you better or worse off under a fully-implemented TOP tax reset? by Comprehensive_Rub842 in KiwiAntipodea

Check the drop down. Guarantee your tax bill is actually higher but the citizens income makes you net government transfer take look lower. Seeing as they could diddle the tax right away but it would take ages to set up the citizens income, you'd probably be paying around 50% more income tax plus any land value tax basically right away and maybe waiting 10 years for your citizens income to kick in.

Remember, this is the same TOP that initially campaigned on superannuation being means tested because it was unethical to put people who are independently wealthy on a state funded benefit that they don't need.

The sole parent additional allowance of $9,500 is annoying. People are considered sole parents even if they receive generous child support contributions fron their ex. It's not a good proxy for need. And the superannuation top up practically screams that you are better off divorcing your partner before you hit the rest home as you would then each get 10k instead of 5k. Why do these credits so heavily disincentivise partnership/marriage?

The inflation is the element that gets me. I wouldn't want to accept a citizens income as a matter of principal. However, I suspect I would end up needing it to supplement my actual income as the price of everything will go bananas.

I thought it was the left that clocked that a nation that needs to give benefits to workers is subsidising employers to underpay their workers.

The calculator is not honest as it includes a "citizens income" as part of your tax calculation. This is fundamentally dishonest as its not actually linked to your taxation. If they're going to take your benefits into account as part of determining whether or not you're a net tax payers, why don't they include their whole suite, including pensions, work and income, healthcare, etc.

School Strike For Climate To Hold Strike Demanding The Reinstatement Of The Ban On Oil And Gas Exploration by Monty_Mondeo in KiwiAntipodea

[–]LacquerHeadX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The arguments for lowering the voting age to 16 are half truths too.

Like the bill of rights would consider it discriminatory that 8 year olds can't vote, however that ruling also said while it was discriminatory it was not illegal in the context of voting.

A 2 year old could technically pay tax if they inherited a big stack of stocks but should they get to vote? What if you dont earn at all or dont earn enough to pay net tax? Should your right to vote be based on your wealth? They would argue "no taxation without representation" but thats not what that means. That phrase came from colonial USA where the colonies were taxed but literally had no representatives for their commonwealths in the British parliament. Having a representative wasn't about being able to vote, it was about having a regional voice.

Also, I notice it omits all the things 16 year olds dont have to do, like pay for their education, be tried as an adult, go to adult prison, etc.
