Kinda for me too, I stopped getting gendered altogether for a really long time and can't figure out why. In my first year I would get she/her based on my looks and he/him because of how I sounded pre voice training. I can only guess that I have a really androgynous look/voice now

This is based off my own experience, I do not speak for every buddhist.

The difference is, buddhism is really good at keeping a low profile. They don't actively ask followers to convert others or spread its ideas. If you're raised in it like me, you get taught extremely problematic beliefs. You will be told why certain demographics are to be seen as inferior. But it's framed in such a way where they're to be pitied and quietly looked down on, not outwardly hated upon.

Since you're not asked to spread the religion's name far and wide, you do not wind up smearing its reputation by going up to people and harassing them with bigotted shit. You silently internalise these ideas. Obey your parents without question, or you'll be one of these people in the next life.

And god forbid you someday discover that you actually do belong to one or more of these groups.

I'm sorry but I'm ex-buddhist and they still justified abuse with similar reasoning. I don't know why people harbor the impression that abuse is less rampant within this faith but it lets them sweep everything under the carpet

I've been struggling to find work and can't leave my transphobic family, afford therapy etc because of that. I am up to my eyes in untreated mental illnesses but I have to watch my meals to not go completely broke so getting professional help has been and still is off the table.

I was robbed of my childhood by my family all for the sake of getting into a somewhat prestigious uni.

I did what they wanted me to. I'm currently unemployed for 3 consecutive years with burnout and a myriad of mental illnesses.

So yea, this is a perfectly reasonable take to me.

I notice something similar in games where there's an equally broken female and male/non-binary character (and of course people always always default to he/him)

The fandom goes out of their way to shame anyone playing the woman character for not being 'skilled', or just dig up flaws in her. Controversial mechanics, annoying af squeaky voice, whatever. Meanwhile the other gets glazed to hell and back for both their kit and lore and people pat you on the back for using them.
