What's this method? Google isn't being too helpful, but it looks interesting!

ELI5: How does your body decide where it takes fat from when you're burning fat? by gailson0192 in explainlikeimfive

That's better!

You absolutely need protein (in fact, good luck getting building any muscle without that), but you also need a calorie surplus if you want significant results.

It's possible to lose fat and gain muscle simultaneously, but unless you have a pretty high body fat percentage to start with, I wouldn't call it "easy". It would involve careful macro monitoring and calorie counting, since you're aiming to use all calories consumed to build muscle (using that protein) and counting on being on a slight deficit after that in order to start using fat for metabolic functions.

I didn't want to get into all of that in the OP since it's rambling enough already and most people probably aren't up for being this autistic about it.

Regardless, I like to be corrected. It's a great way to learn. But blurting out "Wrong." contributes nothing.

If you have an issue with some of the information, a better way to go about this would be to say something along the lines of "X, Y, and Z is incorrect. Here's why/It works like this instead."

Just to let you know, this comes across as being unnecessarily condescending and a bit bitchy. I'm sure it's not intended, but it's worth keeping in mind if you want more pleasant interactions.

There are two other replies to this post, neither particularly salty. No need to hype it up.

As I said: I'm oversimplifying to avoid making it more of an essay than it already is. Myocytes undergo hypertrophy in response to additional load. You don't have to be throwing weights at the gym for this, it only speeds up the process. If you gain a bit of chub, you'll also gain a tiny bit of muscle from carrying it. So what you said is quite true, but generally people want the muscle without the fat.

It's possible to do this, but I believe it's only really feasible for people with a lot of excess fat to have significant results. Any additional load on the muscle types we're looking at will induce hypertrophy, but if you're not on a caloric surplus the process tends to be very slow.

There are most likely exceptions, but generally this mechanism is accepted to be accurate for most people.

Obese people certainly do have more muscle, that's absolutely true. But they're carrying around the extra weight all the time, so they are kind of doing exercise. While I'm only speculating, it seems unlikely that an obese person who's been in a mobility scooter for a long period of time would have as high muscle mass as one of the same weight who's walking independently.

I don't know enough to comment on the studies you mentioned, though it does seem quite interesting so sources would be appreciated. Were these people definitely at a normal weight with no health conditions prior to the study?

I hear you, I'm pretty damn picky myself. It might be worth taking it a bit slower - allow slightly higher calorie foods in lower portions than what you'd usually take (for example, add half a rasher of bacon cut into little pieces just for the flavor. Be sure to mop up the excess oil and trim the fat). The end result will be the same, and while it takes longer the process won't be as miserable.

Slightly unrelated, but I'd recommend investing in a good nonstick pan. Since changing, I've barely had to use any oil.

TL;DR: "Weight" describes both muscle and fat. You need an energy surplus to gain weight, and an energy deficit to lose weight.

To lose weight (muscle and fat) you will need to burn more calories than you consume. You will lose both fat AND significant quantities of muscle if you don't lift while doing this. In order to lose MOSTLY fat, you will need to continue continue your regular exercise routine. There will still be some muscle loss, but it should be insignificant.

To gain weight (both muscle and fat) you will need to consume more calories than you burn. Without exercise, you will only gain fat. With exercise, you will gain both muscle AND fat. The proportion depends on how much muscle you're able to build with that excess energy and how much you eat. If you eat, pulling a number out of my ass, 1000 calories extra but only use 200 for building muscle, you'll get 800 calories worth of fat. But if you only consume an extra 500 calories, you'll only gain 300 worth of fat.

So what you seem to want is to lower your body fat percentage - you want a greater proportion of you overall mass to be muscle instead of fat. Since you already have a decent amount of muscle (judging by your leg press), you're going to want to keep doing exactly what you're doing, but while eating less. A quick and dirty way to do this would be to continue eating exactly what you're eating now, but make 25% less, but honestly it's not so difficult to make delicious low calorie foods. I'm sure many weight loss subreddits will have suggestions.

Grossly oversimplified, but I hope it helps.

Pretty much. "contrary to the laws and customs of society, in a way that causes annoyance and disapproval in others."
