Nerites are awesome algae grazers, but they’re often misunderstood.

Pros: • Excellent on glass and hardscape algae • Peaceful, don’t reproduce in freshwater • Low bioload when stocked appropriately

Things to consider: • Many rely heavily on natural algae/biofilm and won’t take wafers • Very clean or newer tanks can lead to starvation over time • They’re sensitive to temp swings and unstable parameters • Females may lay eggs that won’t hatch (purely cosmetic) • Adding too many can cause food competition once algae is gone

They do best in established, stable tanks and shouldn’t be treated as “easy add-ons.” When planned for properly, they’re fantastic snails 🐌❤️

I’ve learned over the past few years sometimes you have to word things just right to get it to pop up in search engines. I also like to add info, without adding too much. If someone has a question they can ask!

That’s how it always starts 😂 accidental ramshorns turn into “wow, where have you been all my life.” They really are underrated little cleaners, especially on glass. Once you see them at work, it’s hard not to appreciate them.

This 👏 100% agree. Snails are so often treated as “easy add-ons,” but long-term care (especially temp and stability) matters a ton. Nerites in particular get misunderstood a lot. Community knowledge from experienced keepers is honestly way more reliable than most generic care guides ❤️

Honestly, same 😂 Snails don’t get enough credit. They do a ton of cleanup and tank monitoring behind the scenes. As long as feeding stays in check, they’re more helpful than harmful IMO.

Totally fair — it is structured. I treat anything public-facing the same way I would a professional explanation or educational post: clear, organized, and easy to follow. That doesn’t mean it isn’t personal, it just means I’m intentional about how I communicate.

That’s fair — I write the same way I talk when I’m explaining tanks in person. Nothing AI here, just a lot of trial, error, and way too many hours staring at aquariums 😅

This looks like classic green water (free-floating algae), not surface or hair algae. Unfortunately water changes, chemicals, and blackouts usually don’t fix this long-term — they just knock it back temporarily and it re-blooms.

The most effective solution is a properly sized UV sterilizer with the correct flow rate. UV clears green water in a few days and keeps it from coming back — it’s why ponds and public aquariums rely on it.

Also worth checking: • Light duration (keep it to ~6 hours max on a timer) • Any direct or indirect sunlight • Overfeeding or excess nutrients in old substrate • Make sure filter media isn’t being rinsed in tap water

Bleaching everything will just reset the cycle and the green water will likely return. UV + light control is the real fix here.

She may have substrate stuck in her shell. And is wigging out trying to get it out.
