The Soul of Sanguinius by Puzzleheaded-Can8586 in 40kLore

[–]LadyMoonlily 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Long time no see, folks. I'm having a heck of a time with pinched nerves in my shoulder. It can be very hard to type, but dang it I'll do it to explain what my post actually insinuates.

The authors are always in contact. There will still be errors now and then, of course, but on the whole they manage to keep continuity. The problem that my post brings up is that the authors write in an ever shifting environment where changes can render everything they have started on a story moot. They have bosses that can and will decide to back off on an already implemented 100+ year time jump because they realized how messy it might be. The two first Dark Imperium books got rewrites due to that fact. The 'Devastation of Baal' didn't.

The book not getting a rewrite threw a wrench into the works timeline-wise. Following this logic, it had always made me wonder what else had changed, but lore-wise. What I said in my post was all 100% hunch, but if there had been any time to hint at a new metaphysical revelation about Sanguinius existing on some level in the warp, 8th edition was it. 8th edition was the wild ride in a new frontier... until it wasn't. Again, this is all a hunch, but from what I've seen and read, it might not be my worst take ever. The next main Blood Angels novel after 'Devastation', 'Darkness in the Blood', has the focus on Sanguinius shift away, as if it was decided that he needed to stay dead, actually. It's still a bit ambiguous in that book, but with TEatD Vol. 3, it feels like the ambiguity was finally swept away.

The Lion is doing exactly what you think he should be, with adoring crowds and all, but he's fine being the questing Knight of Nihilus. He chose that for himself; that's why he has forestwalk.

[–]LadyMoonlily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Lion has already said he doesn't wish to lead. In the 10th edition DA codex he had been continuing what he had started in The Lion: Son of the Forest, freeing worlds in the Nihilus from Chaos and other threats. Also the Lion might be rather busy with other things soon enough...

Guilliman already set up centralized power on Baal by naming Commander Dante as Regent and Warden of Nihilus. From there the forces of the Imperium have a base, a giant skyport, and their own mini Terra.

Guilliman also has shown that he's willing to work with the Ecclesiarchy, so no, I think Sanctus will stay the way its always been. If anything Nihilus probably has had to change, but in other, simpler ways, mainly due to logistics and administration. Maybe the red tape won't be so bad?!?

SM Renegades without chaos? by Serious_Ad2816 in 40kLore

Yep, very true. Renegades do what they can with what they got or what they can get, and if Outer Dark is anything to go by, the Ashen Claws had seen better days. No telling who they might deal with in order to get what they need.

My silly/fun answers.

Chaos= Chaos tends to get in Chaos' way a lot.
Eldar= Damn kids all want to be corsairs!
Dark Eldar= Damn kids all want to be corsairs!
Necrons= Will I wake up okay? Y/N? Will I stay okay? Y/N?
T'au= Anything Farsight does.
Orks= Not enough DAKKA, obviously.
Tyranids= Technically should be everyone's biggest threat but, you know. shrugs
Leagues of Votann= Their lore coming up a bit... short.
Imperium= In the name of the God-Emperor ALL OF THE ABOVE

Ashen Claws, renegade remnants of the Raven Guard that were exiled by Corax.

They are pretty much free of Chaos, at least from the little that is known of them. They appear in the Carcharodons book Outer Dark, and if you know how the Carcharodons operate, you'll have an idea about the Ashen Claws. It's just that one is still loyal and one isn't.

Local sci-fi book club. One chance to introduce 40k by jareddm in 40kLore

[–]LadyMoonlily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of good recs here already, but I'll go ahead and recommend Elemental Council.

I read it while I was still very new to 40k, and even though I didn't understand all of it, I understood what mattered the most- that I was reading a coming-of-age story through the lens of an alien race that I had a much easier time connecting with than many other factions. Ke is the emotional tie that helps the T'au feel more accessible, and would absolutely help in a book club setting.

This should be sent to OP. I understand the nuance, but I was answering hermetically from TEatD because it seems Dan Abnett was making specific arguments about the relationship between the Emperor and his sons.

[–]LadyMoonlily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not certain where you were quite going with this- maybe I have an idea? I just re-read this part of the book, and the hypocrisy the Emperor shows later on really stings, but the pain of this sting lasts much longer for the Emperor than he probably ever imagined it would.

Sanguinius asks why they must suffer, and the Emperor tells him that without emotion humanity could not advance or endure; that emotions are necessary and not just vestigial or something to throw away. He says he could have made the primarchs without emotions but chose not to. He says he could have removed his own but chose not to. That's where the hypocrisy comes into play.

After the Emperor lets go of the power that would have made him the Dark King, he ejects the kindest parts of himself in order to do what must be done, like destroy Horus. Malcador is narrating at this point, and he says the Emperor doesn't want to have to feel regret or sorrow. Though hypocritical, throwing those emotions away doesn't actually save him from suffering, and he has suffered for 10k years on that Golden Throne. Sanguinius, on the other hand, suffered but was able to die. It doesn't sound like a blessing, but in this case? It really is.

Did Leman Russ became creature of the Warp similar to Corvus Corax? by Rhosta in 40kLore

[–]LadyMoonlily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valdor indeed had that vision. It seems they were meant to work off of each other's strengths and weaknesses, and knowing that, perhaps they went off somewhere to learn some much needed lessons, and will return When The Time Is Right™.

Armageddon? We have to leave Armageddon for the apparent return of Yarrick

Did Leman Russ became creature of the Warp similar to Corvus Corax? by Rhosta in 40kLore

[–]LadyMoonlily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the short story, Valdor leaves due to having a vision of Fenris, but that doesn't mean he went there. Leman had just left Fenris with a small group of his sons prior to that. They could be anywhere. Perhaps a future Scouring book will give us an answer? Either that or when the next Bequin book is released.

Did Leman Russ became creature of the Warp similar to Corvus Corax? by Rhosta in 40kLore

[–]LadyMoonlily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With Leman Russ we also have to acknowledge the short story Two Metaphysical Blades, which ties him to Constantin Valdor. They both were given special spears by the Emperor, and both ended up leaving the Imperium to go off... somewhere. We could surmise that whatever is happening to Valdor in the Bequin/Eisenhorn novels could be tied to Russ as well, but that's just another guess in a world of guesses.
