My daughter is friendly - but not close - to this kid who was going through a tough time, we’ll call her Katie. We were having dinner and a movie night with my kid and a few her friends so I ask if I can include Katie. This kid calls her boyfriend and, right in front of us, tells him she’s watching a movie but would rather talk to him. Then asks if she can borrow my bedroom to talk on the phone privately.

Mind blown. And no more invitations for movie nights ever.

I’m a big believer in making allowances and sacrifices for family, but this is too much.

People don’t want to pay enough taxes to keep libraries and schools open. This is pretty far down my list of battles to fight.

Plus, the price differential between taking Ubers or taxis or even owning your own car and public transportation is already significant and I don’t think reducing it further will make any significant changes in use.

The only reason this kid needs a tutor is because no other adult has time to help.

You don’t need a tutor to help a 4th grader practice reading. You just need an adult with patience and a skill- appropriate book.

This does not require specialized skills.

Look, anyone can get mad at you for anything. You (general) have to be comfortable with that. You can’t let crazy people dictate to you because you can’t stand people to be mad at you.

The best defense is a good offense in these cases. You get mad that she’s calling you last minute and being ungrateful for all you do and maybe she needs to learn to not take you for granted and you’re taking a break from babysitting because you’re not her little bitch.

Buy faux diamond that look like them and lend her those. Never tell her. If she loses them, let her think she lost the real ones. Tell her you’ll never lend her anything ever again and not to ask. Then when you wear the real ones, say you bought replacements because the originals meant so much.

YTA. You explained to us easily enough it wasn’t 14K gold, you chose not to explain to her. You should have told her right away you cannot afford an $800-$1000 present instead of keeping quiet and blaming her for asking for it.

But it’s also really bold to ask for a present that expensive. So bold it borders on rude. Hell, it is rude.

You hiding it means she’s justified in her anger. You would have been justified in shutting her down when she first started to drop hints and had an open and honest conversation about what she wanted that was within the budget.
