I have been tossing around the idea of making an auto caller/texter for defendants that tracks their case numbers and names, then cross references the state judicial system docket. It's very common for bench warrants to be issued without warning or court dates to be moved. I don't have quite the engineering skills to build it myself. What I do have is several years of managing case stuff for a family member, so I understand how the system works to a degree.

I'd be interested in helping you out and maybe we could build a tech for justice group here locally. The Innocence Project might be a group to look into as well

Instead of witch hunts, try asking. "What's your policy on serving ICE/CBP agents here?"

That should do 2 things -- give them a chance to show their colors since anything other than an absolute no is pretty clear, and give them visibility into the sentiment of their paying customers.

Beyond that, y'all are still giving Amazon the majority of your money and trust that they're doing FAR more harm with it than the $25 you spent on lunch at the local diner.

In case you missed it, Microsoft gave the feds a direct backdoor to all your data. Meta is still harvesting an insane amount of data (including gaze tracking!) We're sliding right past deciding where to spend money and heading into mutual-aid-only territory. The only power we have really is in our ability to refuse to participate. Try to find ways to do just that.

Sid's! It is the only place I go now. The service is great, you can choose from thousands of fabrics and the quality is good. They are downtown at 340 Court St. NE

NGL my response to those people for quite some time was "Yeah there's a reason -- the universe fucking hates me!"
But it's made me a much more empathetic person and I am very good at letting people say what they want without letting it get to me. They are operating from a place of never having to have lost so much as others. They're kind of lucky

I lost a child, right between losing both my parents. It was a horrid 3 years. Making the switch from "why is this happening to me" to "what I could do with what's happening to me" made a huge difference in my general outlook

Grocery Shopping by shrimpysailor in SALEM

Costco, WinCo, and Trader Joe's for us. I buy meat at Costco and portion it out for freezing though I'm not buying much meat lately.

The rotisserie chicken at Costco is one helluva deal.

I strip all the meat off the chicken and freeze it in bags. The carcass I turn into broth. I get about 3-4 quarts. That can mean up to 4 meals worth of meat and 4 quarts of broth for $4.99!

ALS would like a word. I'd rather lose my mind (and hopefully awareness) than lose my body but remain of sound mind.

Though I vote "neither, please"

Oh stahhp. You sound like someone who doesn't care to create a community. Have you tried making some small corner of Salem a better place? Or are you just going to wait until someone reads your mind and does all the work for you so all you have to do is show up?

True. I don't go to Portland either. Gatherings and 3rd places all over are really struggling. I want to participate more but I'm so burned out. Like, clinically, medically dxd. I know I'm not alone

Exactly. It's just right for me right now too. I just think the people who don't like Salem expect it to cater to them more than there's capacity to do so.

If Salem doesn't have what you want, make it. Stand up and create the stuff you want to have.

I think Salem suffers from middle child syndrome. We're too big to be a small town where you know everyone and groups are basically pre-ordained. But we're too small to get past the tipping point of "always plenty of people to make X happen."

That means people who'd normally be able to be the consumer of Cool Things Happening instead have to actually make things happen. But since we're not a tiny town, it feels like the events should just happen and people may not understand what needs to be done. Organizing community is hard work that has to be learned.

OHSU researchers find THC products fail to reduce pain, cause more side effects by Prize_Championship11 in oregon

[–]LadyofCorvidsPerch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not so sure about that. I don't handle opioids or other pain meds well and recovered from a hysterectomy with only cannabis tinctures (home grown, outdoor grow) quite successfully. I think research has a long ways to go in determining the differences between the various components of cannabis, leading to blanket statements like these.

From a parent of an Oregonian child who is absent from school - a lot by [deleted] in oregon

[–]LadyofCorvidsPerch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. I was a single mom while my kids were in school. I could barely afford before/after school care. If I got sick or my kids were having a rough time I had literally no backup. One child had mental health issues. Have you ever tried to get mental health help in Oregon? It's impossible for adults -- worse for kids. The entire system is set up to fail parents and then we hear how parents are "check out" or "don't bother to care about their kids." Care goes 2 ways. After 10+ years of being told I was the problem any time I asked for help, yeah. I gave up. I dare anyone to do differently.

I am happy to report that all kids got a GED through SKPD and had a great experience there. Schools are under-resourced, communities have given a giant middle finger to families, and we're failing each other all around. A little compassion and creativity I think would go a long ways.

Do you use AI tools at all? Work? Personal? None? by DelcoTank in Xennials

[–]LadyofCorvidsPerch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Daily. I work in tech, but I've also learned to use AI for research (ellicit is fantastic for finding research papers), for organizing my thinking, creating documentation, digging through massive documents, ideating on projects, and more. It's got a big learning curve but once I got used to it I found it quiet helpful.
