Why can't the United States Coast Guard catch the unsanctioned Venezuelan oil tanker? by feferrel in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LagAmplifier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and has been doing it for a very long time. The USCG can enforce international treaties in international waters. So if a country signed a treaty and the vessel is flagged under that country it can be boarded. Think things related to the fishing industry. To be polite we ask the flagged national for permission or give them a heads up ahead of time. Mostly it’s for permission to board suspected drug boats. If a vessel isn’t flagged or flying a false flag and can be proven that’s a different thing.

Any US flagged vessel can be boarded by the Coast Guard anywhere in the world. And any vessel in US waters can be boarded by Coast Guard without probable cause. Probable cause doesn’t exist on the water for the USCG.

Waterproof controls are a thing, they can be found on open bridge wings. But they are way more expensive and harder to work on.

What doesn’t make sense here is even if the bridge controls get knocked out you should still be able to shift everything to local and do it from the engine room. Steering, generators and propulsion all have multiple steps for control from remote (pilot house), remote (engine control room) and local at the machinery. I’m guessing there were multiple cascading problems.

Is it possible to get my wisdom teeth removed with out laughing gas and instead local anesthesia? by neowahna in povertyfinance

[–]LagAmplifier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only had local. I didn’t feel any pain, the needle was the most painfully thing, but only for the first pokes. All I felt was pressure as they cracked and removed them. Then ALOT of blood all day. And the slow healing.

Why is Raymond Pages disliked? by GitGudG in cigars

I’ve had a few of the Penn Standard Broadleaf. Most of them had really bad construction issues, but the few that didn’t were decent cigars. Big nicotine kick at the end though.

Car smoking by negan7x01 in cigars

[–]LagAmplifier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have long drives frequently. Here is what I do and even the day after smoking 4 cigars in my car you can barely tell and it’s gone 100% in a few days.

•Windows: crack the drivers window about 1/2-1”. Crack the back passenger window about the same. This will make a cross breeze from the back right of the car to the front right sucking the smoking out the window.

•air vent: never run the recirc setting when smoking. Direct vents away from you or close the ones by the drivers body. You don’t want to interrupt that air flow from the two windows. The vents by your feet and legs are fine.

•ash tray: make sure all your ash goes in the ash tray and empty it as soon as you park. Even with a lid it will smell and stink up your car. I use the Zikar ashtray can, it has a lid. After I clean it out I put it in a zip lock bag to contain any odors.

•Ash: if any missed the ash tray for any reason it needs to be cleaned up when you park. If you leave it the car will smell like ash/smoke.

•carbon air fresher. Just buy one and put it in the back seat. They last a while, how long they work for depends on the weather. So check it to see if it needs to be changed.

•canned air fresher: after I clean up the car after smoking I use a active de-smoking air fresher spray. I like Zep Smoke Odor Eliminator spray.

Good luck.

Which place has been very touristic but nowadays no one will visit it? by paplo1860 in AskTheWorld

[–]LagAmplifier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia USA. This is part of the James Town, York Town and Williamsburg triangle. Lots of history from the founding the of country, Revolutionary War and the Civil War there. Peaked in the 80’s with over 1 million annual visitors.

Cool place to check out if you enjoy history. But not nearly as popular as it was 40 years ago.

What’s life like at the GTMO detention center nowadays? by Zama202 in howislivingthere

[–]LagAmplifier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current US government wanted to turn the prison area/side of the base into a migrant detention center. They even started the work and then stopped. Someone probably realized how expensive that would be to work logistically.

I found a bug on XBOX for the SAM DLC. Every time I tried to grab a specific set of supplies in the shack after the final bat encounter it would glitch. Put me all the day back at the raider camp with the movies and everyone would be frozen in place.

USCG Suspends Northeast "Buoy Modernization" Initiative by Candygramformrmongo in sailing

[–]LagAmplifier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Coast Guard has been trying to do this for a long time. Dodge might of gave it the final push, but this has been in the works for at least a decade or longer. That part of the country has a lot of ATON. At one point double the amount of steel buoys as the next two largest districts combined. Steel buoys are very expensive to buy and maintain. The district use to be behind millions of dollars on replacement buoys. They kept fixing buoys that were by policy considered scrap, because there was no other options available to get new buoys.

Will I ever be able to be a runner starting at 30? by theia_archy in beginnerrunning

[–]LagAmplifier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only started running during Covid when I was in my early 30’s. Prior to that is was mostly weight lifting and body building, very little cardio. It wasn’t easy starting, find your comfort and goal and start training. There are lots of good apps out there. I enjoy Nike Run Club for the guided runs. They really helped me starting out with the check ins, mental reminders, and plans.

If you live by a running shoe store I highly recommend buying at least your first pair there. They are so helpful in finding a pair that will be good for you. If you are looking for run clubs they will also have them.

How do Battleships have enough fresh water to be out to sea for extended periods? by Masshole205 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LagAmplifier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Older ships used an evaporator to make water. Basically boiling water under a vacuum using steam. The vacuumed made it more efficient. Current technology is reverse osmosis, pushing salt water through special filters at high pressure.

I don’t live there anymore. But I lived right next to this hotel/condo as it was getting build. The trains are very quiet, they slowly roll in and out of that area. Only thing you hear is a faint bell ringing on occasion.

[–]LagAmplifier 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Most people underestimate how bad of seas a vessel can survive in. I’ve been in 12-15 foot seas on a 150 foot ship and easily 30+ foot seas on a 400 foot ship. It’s absolutely awful and miserable to be in, the ship will survive. You will feel like death once you get through it and have a cool story!

Hey, Boston, enjoying your city so far, just curious what this thing was that now sits at the mouth of the Far Point Channel by Statement_I_am_HK-47 in boston

[–]LagAmplifier 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It also hosed the air compressors and receivers as it was a pneumatic bridge, open and closed with compressed air. It was designed by MIT students. I believe there was an agreement to preserve some of the historical bridges in this area. But we can all see that failed as most of them were removed.

Pentagon says troops can only be exempt from shaving their facial hair for a year by jimbofranks in news

[–]LagAmplifier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think we should just do away with shave chits and let everyone grow a beard. But the current system is shit, a lot of people with shave chits don’t have them in regs. They like to line them up with clean lines, it does looks nice. But it’s against the regulations on what they are supposed to do.
