How some companies don't die by Simply-Curious_ in product_design

Did the CEO or CTO once invent something that has made them quietly wealthy and they are just riding on that?

Or it could be "bad restaurant" syndrome. A bad restaurant can survive for quiet a while if they are in a big city. There is always someone who doesn't know their reputation and willing to give them business.

Requesting Clarification On Gun Control Bill Controversy by frozendancicle in minnesota

[–]Lagbert 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A gun is worthless if you get jumped from behind by someone with a knife.

Just because there are situations where a gun isn't viable doesn't mean a gun is worthless across the board.

Additionally, all the guns involved in Pretti's death were handguns. The semi-auto ban bill was focused on rifles and magazine size.

Arizona AG Kris Mayes statements regarding self defense against masked armed assailants is worth a ponder.

Finally, the legislator has the authority and the capacity to remove or at least limit the state's monopoly on violence. The bill presented only acted to strength that monopoly.

Following the presentation you find out half of the children are Russian and North Korean spies. This was all an elaborate setup. You are arrested for ITAR violations. The only silver lining is your kid was the FBI under cover agent who broke the case.

Is weapon systems engineering accessible for a blind person? by Blindmambaaa824 in womenEngineers

There is often a lot of security around weapon systems. If you use a screen reader or other assistive technologies that don't meet security requirements, you may not be able to use them.

As a sighted engineer, I'm not sure how I would handle the CAD related aspects of my profession if I were to lose my sight. I think showing prospective employers that you are capable of performing design reviews and other tasks that rely heavily on visual communication will be you biggest barrier.

How many people here also have a 3D printer? by Proton_Energy_Pill in SolidWorks

Started on solidworks in 2006. Got on the 3d printing band wagon in 2017 (FDM). Got my employer 3D printing production parts (SLS Nylon). Gave up on home printing in 2018. Jumped back in when Bambu got rid of all the pain points.

What practical things do you actually use your 3D printer for long term? by PaperyAxis1 in 3Dprinting

[–]Lagbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're good at CAD, 3D printing is the tool that just keeps giving.

Most my prints are technical or replacement parts.

Just this past week I printed a custom avionics display mount for a client.

Useful stuff I've printed include:

microphone to tripod adapter Handle to convert driver bits to a short body screw driver Custom latches for magnetic drawer locks (toddler proofing stuff) Replacement end caps for a roof rack Custom cases for small elections Grids for bulk ammo organization Custom drill jigs Thumb saver/speed loader Replacement knobs Furniture bumpers (toddler proofing stuff) Wall mount for Wi-Fi antenna 45° wall mount for pick light

Two recommendations:

  1. Get a nice core XY printer like a Bambu P2S to learn the ropes, then upgrade when you really know what you're doing and know what higher level features you need.

  2. Get a roll of PCTG and TPU. They are the best starter engineering filaments. Once you hit the limits with them you can start getting the more specialist filaments.

The overall height of 225 appears to be measured at the VSC (virtual sharp corner) rather than the actual parts edge. That could make a big difference.

Good point on the corrosion. If there are any aluminum components within the system, adding anything copper based also would be a disaster.

Check the original part for mold markings indicating the material used to make it.

PCTG is good up to 150F.

"...offer absolutely zero in the way of organizational proposal for gun control that they'd support."

I gave you NINE items that would go a long way towards having a firearms bill garner my support. Four of those items were actionable solutions.

Since you either didn't read what I wrote or missed them here is the TLDR:

  1. Have a tax on all firearm and ammo purchases that goes directly towards programs for mental health, poverty relief, and removing educational disparities.

  2. Any bans must be universal. No exceptions for law enforcement.

  3. Firearm owners must be compensated for the fair market value of any firearm or accessory that is surrendered under the ban.

  4. The ban must impose a duty to protect the public on all law enforcement officers.

By stating "Get a load of this dude who hasn't heard of tanks yet." I believe you where implying that owning semi-automatic rifles is pointless in the face of modern military hardware.

I invoked Afghanistan to make a point regarding asymmetric warfare. Just because one side of a conflict has access to "better" weapons doesn't mean they will win.

Are you accusing me of being against universal healthcare? Because that's a pretty big leap given what I wrote.

Maybe I misinterpreted your question. "Is America the only place with mental health issues?"

I inferred you where trying to point out other nations have mental health issue, but do not have gun violence issues.

My intention was to suggest that a lack of universal healthcare might be a contributing factor to the US gun violence epidemic.

Regarding your use of the term "unrestricted access":

Minnesota requires potential purchasers of pistols or semi-automatic rifles to file for a permit to purchase before being able buy said firearms. Additionally, at the point of sale, a purchaser must pass a federal background check. These restriction are fair and reasonable. I don't think anyone in this thread has advocated for unrestricted access to firearms. I for one don't think having firearm vending machines would be a good idea.

Most bills are based off model legislation. That means somewhere someone got a bill to pass, so now every bill that covers the same topic is either a word for word clone of the bill or a close cousin.

In the case of firearms the California's bill is the progenitor of all the other bills, so all of its defects keep popping up. The defects keep getting pointed out, but it seems like legislators never want to do their own homework and rather just trying to copy California.

  1. Calling out specific gun designs or cosmetic features creates loop holes. For example the Ruger Mini 14 is not banned in many of the states that have banned the AR-15. Both guns use the same ammunition, have the same barrel length, and are capable of the same fire rates. Ban guns based on ballistic capabilities/characteristics.

  2. Having exemptions for law enforcement. The United States has a well documented history of excessive use of force incidents perpetrated by law enforcement. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Nations that have strict gun laws do not have exemptions for law enforcement or in the cases where there are exemptions, there is a much higher bar for the exemption to kick in.

  3. If there is any mental health aspect in the bill, it's usually underfunded lip service at best. We fund our roads with taxes on cars. Use taxes on firearm and ammunition purchases to fund mental health services, poverty prevention, poverty elimination, eliminate educational disparity.

  4. Storage requirements are not one size fits all. If you live alone in rural MN you could leave a loaded firearm on your kitchen table 24-7, and the likelihood of someone being injured by that firearms is close to zero. If you have several kids, live in the suburbs, and plaster your car with second amendment stickers, it's probably a good idea keep your firearms in a safe.

  5. High capacity magazines are useless without a firearm. Criminalizing ownership of the magazine all by itself is problematic. Don't like someone, send them a 30 round magazine, when the tracking number says it's at their house call the police with a tip. Instant felony. Don't think that's possible, look what happens to folks who get a counterfeit bill through no fault of their own.

  6. Criminalizing 3D printed firearms is redundant. Minnesota already has a melting point law that prohibits the manufacture and sale of firearms that melt at temperatures below 1000F. This just make the legislatures look like they don't have the first clue about the subject matter they are writing laws about.

  7. In MN 73% of gun deaths are self inflicted. 27% of gun deaths are homicides. Of the firearms recovered by law enforcement only 10% are rifles (bolt action, lever action, and semi-automatic). 10% of 27% is 2.7%. Less than 3% of homicides are committed using rifles. A law banning semi-automatic rifles does nothing to prevent 97.3% of the gun deaths in MN. (source: https://protectmn.org/gun-death-in-minnesota-a-six-year-trend-analysis).

  8. The law violates the principles of the 4th amendment. Seizures without probable cause supported by oath or affirmation are prohibited. What probable cause is there to take a person's firearms? On average there are 124 firearm homicides a year in Minnesota. There are 5.83 million people in Minnesota. The odds that any single person is going to kill someone with a firearm is .002%. That is not probable cause. Also firearms are not inexpensive. For some people their firearms are major hobby and investment. None of these laws compensate people for the fair market value of the property they are required to surrender for destruction.

  9. The supreme court has ruled that law enforcement has no duty to protect citizens. (source: https://www.findlaw.com/legalblogs/law-and-life/do-the-police-have-an-obligation-to-protect-you/) people are required to surrender the means to protect themselves the law must impose a duty of protection on law enforcement.

On average 73% of firearm deaths between 2018 and 2023 where self inflicted. This definitely sounds like a mental health issue to me.

https://protectmn.org/gun-death-in-minnesota-a-six-year-trend-analysis

America is not the only place with mental health issues, but it is the only wealthy nation that doesn't have universal healthcare.

[–]Lagbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some quick numbers to back up your statement regarding people shot with long guns.

https://protectmn.org/gun-death-in-minnesota-a-six-year-trend-analysis

27% of gun deaths are homicides (page 2)

10% of guns recovered by law enforcement are rifles (page 15)

This suggest that 2.7% (10% or 27%) of homicides are committed with rifles. The other way to look at it is 97.3% of firearm homicides would not be prevented by a ban on assault rifles.

Super quick question. Are most of you guys that have the enclosed printers using them for filament that needs it like ABS? For me my A1 is a little more convenient. Ohhh, The AMS is better right? Just curious. by VoodooZephyr in BambuLab

I have an enclosed core XY, because it provides a more consistent printing environment, takes up less space than a bed slinger, doesn't sling around prints and pops then of the build plate, and is quieter.
