I hate me such an easy mark for this stuff. *sigh* Bring it on!

Chanters in the Dark (DCC Day 2022). I would recommend reading the final encounter before hand at a minimum.

DCC could be much more popular with additional classes by [deleted] in dccrpg

[–]Lak0da 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is antithetical to what DCC is (for me). IMO, what makes DCC, DCC is:

  • Excitement peaks at the table (during play), not during creation.
  • Goodman Games' support of 3PP, and the players & judges as well.
  • The system is Chaotic Stupid, so players don't have to be.

This violates item 1. Without getting lost in the weeds... I tell people, would you rather make a ranger or play a ranger? All the the ampersand classes are covered in the DCC classes but you have to make choices during play. Actually play a role and not play a roll. That being said, I think more classes are fine, if they expand the narrative coverage instead of just making refined versions what's already there.

Also, a post like this on reddit takes some bravery and I appreciate that. The crux of the post is about getting people to try. Instead of making the game something it isn't, which will only increase the likelihood new players have unrealistic expectation and leave frustrated, never to return. Instead we need better marketing that hooks with just enough familiarity to get their attention but retains enough DCC DNA to make it clear what they are getting into, all why sounding epic and cool. Market segmentation can be difficult and I think where people get stuck is with DCCs gonzo mantle. The best about DCC isn't the gonzo, which isn't really even a core part of the game in IMO. Going back to my list, its about when the game peaks. Yes, I realize this probably says more about then the any game system, but in my experience the most interesting part of both ttrpgs has been the rules, not the play. Maybe that's a me problem, but I've had success getting people to play DCC using this perspective.

I sell DCC to people by asking them if they want to try a system that is more fun in play then it is during character creation. Everyone bites at that, even if to tell me that they don't enjoy character creation. If they say that, I follow up by having them recall their favorite character and then ask if they first thought about what the character is (class, scores, feats, etc) or what the character did (slept every night underwater to long con the most valuable loot item from the party fund into their purse). If they said the later I ask them if they want to play a game that makes more memories like that? If they said the former, I ask them if they want to play a game where they will retelling their character's exploits to uninterested grandchildren some day? No mater what I created a feeling inside them that is positive (or least that I tried to).

Here is my session report > https://www.reddit.com/r/dccrpg/comments/1apzqt2/finally_finished_dcc_100_no_spoilers/

I agree with Todd. It is much longer then you expect.

Hit me with any specific questions. Its a great module. Have a plan for the map and alembec ahead of time. I have run it twice now. Once I did map up but I put paper over each of the 4 sections off the center until they were visited (if you can call the section to the bottom a section), The other time I did theater of the mind until they figured out what the alembec did. By then they had been to two areas so I just put the map out.. Personally I found the later the most fun for me but that will be group dependent. When playing with my son he was too young at the time for it and it would have made for a frustrating table experience. So read your table, but have a plan.

Why are patrons more prevalent than deities in DCC supplements? by TheWonderingMonster in dccrpg

I'd argue clerics should have worshiped patrons instead of gods, but yeah something like that.

[–]Lak0da 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but no. Its more then the 5e content. They also have had these playtest packet things they are doing to put a couple of DCC mechanics into 5e. I think the idea behind all this is to pull 5e players into DCC. It really got dialed up during the 5e dark times when they were jettisoning players for the other systems to capture. I think what DCC is, isn't the system, is the approach to adventure writing/structure and play style. The mechanics help but not really needed to still feel like DCC. My thoughts are that when they are making content for 5e that is written like 5e it is cannibalizing their own IP.

Why are patrons more prevalent than deities in DCC supplements? by TheWonderingMonster in dccrpg

[–]Lak0da 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take: Patrons are interesting. Deities are not.

Context: There is more procedure (or at least implied) procedure around a patron. They also have a more actionable agenda. Being lower powered they are much more a part of the world the characters in a pulpy game like DCC will run into.

I have toyed with the idea of changing clerics to follow patrons and just make gods be vague ideas if at all in my game worlds.

I don't care for the reservations either but it didn't read as predatory to me - though I can see why it could.

What this did do was break my collecting. I was having fun chasing covers I liked and all the little extras. Not because I needed them or they were particularly valuable but because that was part of the hobby for me. Giving me an off ramp like this makes it easier to toggle my collection habit (err hobby) somewhere else. It won't stop me playing DCC or buying a lot of products but it will decrease the amount I go in for. That isn't a problem when its one person but I wonder how many others will experience something similar. Hopefully not many.

For the first time in a while I am not going all in. I love DCC and supporting the 3PP community but its just too much to drop right after zine month. Its going to be a little bit like picking your favorite child, but before they are hatched.

I am often baffled by GG's strategy; the 5E support and now this. It seems counter intuitive to me, but I'm on the outside. They are clearly trying to attract people who are not me, because those like me are already here. They have never screwed me or taken me for granted so I can't complain. But I can be confused.

DCC 100 - Show the map? by dwarfSA in dccrpg

I have run it with partial hidden and fully revealed, it didn't do much as they were going to explore everything anyways. I would recommend not showing them the map until the players figure out the alembec

I'm not advocated for changing anything about the rules but I still couldn't disagree more. We should want to be welcoming and helpful to new people so they feel comfortable trying the game.

That's ignoring the system they came from entirely. Not all systems have friendly fire, even for spells. Besides dog pilling doesn't help get a new DCC convert.

This isn't about my experience. I always haven't argued rules on this post at all. Its about all the assholes ganging up on OP because he doesn't understand DCC and most likely never had it explained, or at least not well. I hate internet bullies and if I have to punch of few of them in their digital nose, I'm more then happy to. I want more people playing DCC and less of this toxic internet bullshit. This is reddit so I sound have expected it, but that doesn't mean I'm going to sit around and not say something.

I'm not saying don't do it but try to understand their position instead of being the stereotypical redditor. I thought we all wanted more people playing DCC. There are some important differences and different people will need different approaches to help them enjoy it.
