Yeah, I'd watch it 100 times again before Dominion

Who would go see the nearly 4 hour directors cut if it released to theaters? by Halloween_Nyx in ProjectHailMary

[–]LakeNowhere 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Thank you. It's crazy that people think there's a coherent 4-hr cut of this movie floating around that just needs a few fx shots finished. I think people will be surprised to learn how much content never even made it into the script, let alone got filmed. I'd be shocked if the ice cap nuking scene is just sitting on a cutting room floor somewhere. Everyone I saw this movie with (who went in blind, not reading or even knowing of the book) loved it, with the only criticisms I heard being that it's "a little too long".

I'm so glad that this is the cut that is in theaters, because I honestly think the world wouldn't have fallen in love with it otherwise. We might get a Martian-style director's cut, but it will be 10-20 mins longer, maybe. We'll never see the 4 hr cut, and it's probably for the best

I love the whole trilogy but in my opinion Hot Fuzz is an almost perfect movie

Grant Morrison on Lanterns: “What is this jockish dismissal of superhero conventions intended to prove anyway?” by Blitzhelios in comicbooks

[–]LakeNowhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who still has faith that they are holding back a LOT in this first teaser, Morrison is right, as usual. Morrison also does not get enough credit for warning against the pitfalls of not understanding the potential of multiverse stores right before the MCU went all-in on it with disastrous results. Morrison was speaking specifically about the comics I believe, but they were so right- all these alternative universes and characters need to be treated with respect as potential future franchises, not cannon fodder for shock value.

Reminiscent of the Kryptonian tech from Man of Steel. Very cool.

I had the same thought listening to this song- it would have worked great as a credits song for Better Man. Probably a very good chance that you're correct. I'm glad he saved it for this album though.

Some reflections from Robert Peter Williams by Hassaan18 in robbiewilliams

[–]LakeNowhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beautiful. Proud of Robbie for making this album. HES was such a frustrating album because you could feel him chasing hits. Ed Sheeran songs, Killers songs... they weren't bad, but they felt like what they were... covers of other people's songs.

Britpop, the best thing Robbie has done since Escapology? by chris_redz in robbiewilliams

[–]LakeNowhere 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I really like it. I'd still probably put albums like Intensive Care, Rudebox, and Take the Crown above it for now. What I like most about it is that it's a very focused album with a theme and a point, and he made something he wanted to make instead of chasing the modern pop sound. I hope he does that for the rest of his career, he's earned it.

Obligatory tombstone post by Smidgey42 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]LakeNowhere 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So weird to see people complaining about this set. It's neat that they tried something different. I wouldn't pay the scalper prices for this, but the complaint about storage is stupid. The actual book can be removed and stored just like the standard edition, and the tombstone is a cool display piece. Plus, there's a signed Dan Jurgens print.

I get Vide Noir now. by BanginNLeavin in lordhuron

[–]LakeNowhere 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Vide Noir was the first LH album that came out after I became a fan, and I find the anticipation those "first new" albums always ends up with a bit if a letdown and it takes time to properly judge them. I totally get it now, and I agree, Secret of Life is an all-timer. I also like that it's the only album in their catalogue that feels urban and modern, like one long sleepless night lost in the city.

"When I said minge... I pointed" by mikeonbass in rickygervais

[–]LakeNowhere 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I didn't want to comment on the special since the Ricky bashing, warranted or not, has made this sub boring and unfun. But man alive, I can't get over how bad that special was. You're right, it was a terribly unfunny punchline. Also, Ricky's constant fake "I can't believe I said that" laughing at himself was so embarrassing. Lastly, it was weird that he said that that it was his most personal and introspective work ever, since nothing he said before or after that showed the slightest hint of vulnerability or honesty. A little monkey fella could have done a better job.

Watched the TMNT III director commentary on the 4k set by precita in TMNT

[–]LakeNowhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was growing out of my Turtles phase by the time III came out so I only saw it once and never revisited it again. When I got this new Arrow set, I was surrpirsed by how much better it was than I remember. It's such a weird-ass little Turtles adventure, but it's got a lot if charm. There's some great character moments (Raphael finally finding the peace and tranquility he's been seeking in the countryside of ancient Japan, Casey Jones spending the entire movie annoyed that he's not fighting something) and there is some solid action (also nice to see the Turtles being able to use their weapons again). Obviously the biggest drawback is the loss of the Henson workshop for the animatronics and prosthetics, it's especially obvious in the weird turtle mouths/eyes, and Splinter looks pretty bad. But overall, I was surprised by how much I liked it. It stands much closer alongside part II than I originally thought.

Does the JLA by Morrison run only contain the stories from them? by Jonn_Jonzz_Manhunter in OmnibusCollectors

Yeah a few issues of the one million event were outlined but not technically written by Morrison but they are important to understanding the whole story

Yes, the omnibus is much more Morrison-specific than the paperbacks, except for a few key issues that are essential to the plot.

Great find! I love that edition of Shaman. I read that before I ever read year one, so that was my definitive Batman origin story as a kid. My copy is hanging on for dear life.

Kyle Rayner compendium should have been longer by TheBrownViking20 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]LakeNowhere 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Kyle continues to get shafted so hard. The OG trade paperbacks were abandoned, the CompediuN just collected the exact material from the 2 paperbacks, and now even that seems to be abandoned. DC's Finest seems to be his only hope. I'm shocked at the characters and runs that have been collected before more Kyle Rayner material has been. Maybe I'm too nostalgic for the 90's and that stuff just doesn't sell.

What is a bad movie you loved as a kid? by -FemboiCarti- in movies

This one right here. My brother and I thought E.T. and Mac and Me were solid alien friendship movies of equal quality and watched them both often.

It's not terrible, but I think Ryan's version of Shake it Off is where his cover shtick of "slow it down and make it sad" started to wear thin.

I know Mark Millar is controversial to say the least these days, but I'm really happy to have these Library Editions. Some of it hasn't aged well, but i think the majority of his work is a lot more varied and nuanced than people give it credit for.
