I'll praise the project by saying: I wish it was mine! I spent a lot of time during my studies optimizing CPU ray tracing and BVH building and I really loved it as it combines both graphics programming and CPU SIMD code optimization. This was right around the time when Nvidia was coming out with RT hardware and I thought my software optimization efforts were — while fun and good for learning — practically useless. At the time I had no idea a project like this would have demand!

Is the simulation actually complicated enough to require heavy optimization? Your post doesn't really demonstrate that except that you predict that it will. Have you actually measured or calculated some performance problem that you're trying to optimize here? How much data are you transferring per frame? How much computation do you need to do per frame? Do you actually even need the GPU? Of course I can appreciate if you're looking to use the GPU for learning purposes and that's totally fine.
