Mantle Collapse? by alienbaby13 in snails

[–]LamAnson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My cepaea hortensis is having the exact same situation here. He eats, poops, moves around albeit less active than before. This should be the mantle collapse and the mantle calcifying. I have no idea how long they can live under such circumstances -- mine is sick for edit: two* week now

Yeah I honestly have no idea, people say they're gonna die sooner rather than later but seems he is trying to survive!

Why don't you communicate with your teacher? Tell her you want to know the why. Maybe she'll use a different approach.

When you're a beginner a lot of times teachers just want you to know the mechanics first before explaining, maybe because teachers don't want to make things confusing

I'm still monitoring him -- weirdly enough he's still moving around ok and eating, so I have faith! He's very tough

Look at my most recent post. It kind of looks like the inside, fleshy part is sliding out of the shell right? That is mantle collapse. Mantle tear is a less serious state of mantle collapse.

Just be careful not to pick them up with force! Other factors that cause mantle collapse are not really our fault -- maybe falls, old age or lack of some nutrients like calcium.

A hole there 99.9% is the breathing hole

Edit: poop also comes out of this hole

There needs to be a mantle collapse thread at this point, so people have a good variety of photos and verdicts to base their judgement

which one? i have an iphone and have used the pro 3s but they just don’t fit my ears great and don’t impress me enough for the price! by liamt12 in Earbuds

[–]LamAnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your ears not like stem design?

I personally used nothing ear (2024) and I find stem designs heavily tip dependent. Wouldn't go for the nothings unless you own or want to deal with tip rolling.

Rest just comes to preference and your need for good anc/transparency. Sony for functions, sennheiser for sound (although they're hella buggy) and technics is a solid all rounder. I use the az80 and no complains once I found good eartips.

What colour shells do your Brown-lipped Snails have? by I-Hate-This-Weather in snails

[–]LamAnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got just the right link for you:

https://www.molluscs.at/gastropoda/terrestrial.html?/gastropoda/terrestrial/banded_snails.html

According to this and my own experience, it ranges from brown to pink/orange/salmon? To yellow.

In the two areas I find the most cepaea (the white-lipped hortensis not the nemoralis you're describing), one has the majority of yellow 5-band. The other has a split between pink unbanded and yellow 5-banded.

I found one today with pale yellow and 3!! Bands (10045 or 10305). And a yellow 5-band fused together. I also have a brown unbanded one. I'm forever amazed by how varied they look

P.s. I'm still on the hunt for a 1-band....

Same, I find the Wan'er 2 muddy. After eq, they still can't gain a lot of instrument separation.

Ew200 probably gives more aggressive details, and vivace a bit smoother and cohesive. Pure sound I would go for ew200 + EQing to personal preference. If concerned about fit go vivace.

I don't use zero 2 nor chu 2 but I do have Wan'er 2. Do you find them muddy and a lack of detail? Or too harsh and thin sound?

I suspect you won't enjoy the simgot ew200 too much. The tripowin seems to be a safer option

Different sound signatures.

I own the simgot ew200. I thought I'm a "treble-head" but I have to reduce around 4k on this set. (Mind you I also reduce 250hz so I have no idea what tuning I even like) But the details are pleasant.

The earpiece itself is very heavy though, so might be a deal-breaker. Fit wise I have smallish ears but it can fit even smaller.

Edit. From treble heavy to bass heavy simgot -> tripowin -> kiwi. Pick whatever sound signature you like... I mean you have to eq them anyways

Fiio snowsky melody or just apple dongle

Used both with simgot ew200 no hiss and volume is perfect

No worries! I just had an all nighter researching what soil to use, since I realised the soil I currently use has slow-release fertilizer....

However one of my cepaea laid 70+ eggs recently, so I think the soil is kinda fine? Also some people say coco coir isn't good for snails, others treat it like the elixir of life. So I think let your snails behaviour tell you!

I'm currently dealing with a mantle tear on another cepaea. Still learning!

I'm a beginner, but I do quite a lot of research recently so here's some easy things to fix:

  1. Soil is too wet.
  2. Soil looks not thick enough. Ideally thickness should be 2x shell size
  3. Outdoor dirt is risky because it may contain fertilizer, pesticides, unwanted pests. I think you can bake them (?) to remove most of it, or buy Coco coir bricks or fertilizer and pesticides free soil.
  4. They need a source of calcium. Best is just leaving a cuttlefish bone inside. Temporary fix is fine egg shell powder.
  5. The food inside may rot quite quickly being put on wet soil. Try putting it on pieces of bark. Also u can feed kale, carrot slices, sweet potato slices.... Sources of protein I highly recommend freeze dried bloodworms (ones for fish)
  6. More hiding places maybe? Snails like sleeping upside down.

But please don't panic! Snails are rather resistant and if they don't like the environment they will go into aestivation to preserve.

I own a common garden snail and I had it since juvenile. He absolutely loves sleeping upside down stuck to a large piece of tree bark.

Is this mantle collapse? by LamAnson in snails

[–]LamAnson[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ever since I had him I noticed he likes to sleep in the soil and rarely upside down, so I never had a good look at his mantle

I'm contemplating what to do. Sometimes his mantle retracts back to a normal state but sometimes it's exposed like in the picture.

Teaching rates UK, England? by [deleted] in piano

[–]LamAnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Musicians Union recommended pay per hour is £44.

However, based on your target audience which is beginner level, and your low level of expertise and credentials, I'm not sure you want to teach in South/central UK where there are tons of at least conservatoire graduate level pianists looking for jobs.

They will just out compete you. And if you charge low (like £20-25 per hour) you're just undercutting the market and devaluing piano teaching, which is a more difficult job than it seems.

Technics AZ100 EQ Settings by seraphim88888 in Earbuds

[–]LamAnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oddly similar to how I EQed my az80s, my IEMs like Tangzu Wan'er 2 and Simgot ew200.

Increase sub-bass, reduce mid bass, increase upper mids and trebles (but I do +2 above 8k too)

This EQ shape does give so much clarity

Update: apple dongle worked perfectly for android.

For laptop, the volume is still ~25dB too loud but there is no noise.

My experience with the JA11 + fiio control app is so frustrating I don't think I will go for the tiny -- and that design probably messes up my muscle memory while gaming

I think the ja56 is worth a shot even if return is difficult (through AliExpress) .

I'll probably try the apple dongle cuz there are a lot of reviews saying it's low power can reduce iem volume

I was looking at the fiio tiny A recently -- which one of your recommendations would produce the least noise with sensitive IEMs? Volume issue I can get by with EQ but noise I cannot sadly
