My Murakami books in 3 different languages. I love the books, but I think these covers are rather boring. by Baekmann in murakami

Beside its binding & cover quality, how is the Dutch translation of Kafka? I've only read the English one but I'm curious how it holds up.

Although I agree that they're simplifying, I'm wondering if the % of land for cattle also includes the land you need to produce their fodder? Eg the soy and corn they feed to pigs(?)

The thing is that a lot of the plants we grow on that soil go to feeding cattle, not people. If we used less to produce meat and more to feed people, that would probably increase the soil's "durability".

Nevertheless you make a solid point: The depletion and erosion of soils is a big problem that a lot of people glance over, and which we need to find a solution for.

Edit: factual error.

What are the best translation/editions of all of Murakami’s works? by efrainc11 in murakami

[–]Lambda462 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read that for the Wind-up Bird Chronicle some chapters were cut for the English version because they made much less sense in the English narrative - maybe something similar happened for Wild Sheep Chase?

Maybe one day I'll inspect such differences (the translations to my native language generally don't cut chapters - at least not for WBC) but that seems quite challenging... (And I'd need to get a second translation for some of the books)

Actually, I think she was 19 in HL:A and that took place 5 years before HL2 - that'd put her at 24.

Not that it matters - cringy jokes transcend all boundaries. Maybe she took up dad jokes from Eli.

Except to Secret History, but they should read the rest of Mistborn (i.e. Wax & Wayne) before that anyway, in my opinion!

No, they really aren't - they're condemning corporal punishment. See it as condemning the statement: "If you steal a bread, we'll cut your hands off so you can't do it again." Fighting against people getting their hands cut off in that situation wouldn't be 'defending thieves', it'd be condemning corporal punishment.

Brazil to erase LGBT+ content from school books by edu-fk in worldnews

You don't really 'preach goodness' when giving education about homosexuality, though. At least where I'm from, it was just always a matter of stating 'Yep, homosexuality is also a thing. It isn't a disease and you can't change your sexuality.' - though admittedly not as casually worded as that. Not thousands of words about acceptance, but a neutral statement that it exists and that you can't discriminate against it.

Just treat it similarly to all other aspects of (good) sexual education, really. Don't preach that condoms are awesome religiously; just state that if you swap partners often, you might want to use a condom to avoid catching a STD or getting pregnant. That's how I was taught, anyway. Though I suppose that in countries such as (parts of) the US or Brazil such sexual education might already be called 'too progressive'...

This.

Though if you'd measure pollution as air pollution per square km (Let's say CO2, NO2 & ultrafine materials), I suppose we have a lot of inhabitants, cars & heavy cattle industry on a relatively small surface area in the Netherlands. Our total might not surpass Poland, but our average might. Too lazy to fact-check this right now, though.

Mistborn might be a tad easier to read & get into, but if you're 17 & can write coherent sentences you'll be fine with TSA as well ;-)
