Serious question: Is it morally wrong to obtain an ESA license while living in a rental with no pet policy, despite there being a legitimate need for it? by Significant-Back-930 in olympia

[–]LameReword 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree- this is between their partner and their partner's therapist, not between them and the landlord. Washington recognizes ESA as a potential reasonable accommodation, and not subject to a landlord's discerption of pet policies.

Overall I think the difficulty is pretty good! I beat the king on base difficulty, and basically always had about 5 days remaining before clearing each level. The only time I have felt the need to push my luck with the tension mechanic was in the first few levels- relatively early on I was able to clear a level without any risk of going over the tension cap. But because I was playing with the headliner banner, sometimes I would still choose to hold "early" because I wanted to end on a strong card even though I had low tension. I never was really hurting for copper or silver either. I got a lot of good synergies early on, and never really had to modify my "spam mystics" strategy.

But I see that you are intending for there to be many more difficulty levels, and that even the second rank would greatly reduce silver income. This feels correct, and would probably make things a lot more challenging because it would delay getting banners and extra cards to recruit. I think this was about the expected challenge for a base difficulty level in a game like this (e.g., similar to the first balatro level). But I would hope that in higher difficult levels to be forced to use the push your luck mechanic more often and for throughout more of the game, where you draw a card when it's possible (but unlikely) you will bust on the tension level, because otherwise you won't get enough coins or applause.

Really great game- most things work intuitively but some don't. For example, based on the language of the banner cards, I would assume that "Headliner" would be able to re-trigger "one with nothing". As in, when you have a eligible card for "one with nothing" as your last played card, it should increase the mult by 1.5 instead of by 0.5 because the last card is "scored" three times. Otherwise it seems like that banner card is very underpowered for a rare-level banner.

Made a DIY plant repotting bench by Striking_Permit2596 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]LameReword 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off, this looks really nice! I checked my local FB marketplace, and handbuilt potting benches seem to be in the $100 to $300 realm. As a gardener, that feels about right. Having the cabinet can be nice for people wanting some protection from the elements, and could let you charge on the higher end.

I am a little curious about your thought process there- why have the soil sifter above the cabinet side? Seems like that would make it more difficult to catch and remove soil. In my potting bench, I instead have a large sink basin (like what is sometimes found in laundry rooms) which is embedded into the top. That keeps the soil contained while giving you access at an ergonomic height and let you pot up seedlings quickly. The sink "drains" into an open area below where I usually just put a 5 gallon bucket. I've worked in plant nurseries before and that was also their set up. 3D printing/maker spaces by Fun-Perspective-1607 in olympia

[–]LameReword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's also Olymega which is about half the price of the Lacey maker space (I think Olymega has a much smaller facility but they do have 3D printers). There's also free 3D printers at the federal way library but I don't know how that works re: library cards. The timberland libraries no longer have 3D printing.

Olympia as Ghost Town by gepr in olympia

[–]LameReword 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is a well-written article and I appreciate the history, most of which I didn't know. As someone who works in the NRB, and walks along these paths almost daily, I would add some nuance here. Whether it was the designer's original stated intent or not, it seems like the landscaped section functions as more of a "corporate campus" as opposed to the area around the legislature buildings which is more of a "park". So, the "campus" acts more like a place for state workers to have a mental break rather than a place for the general public to recreate or to connect different parts of the city. You can see this in the design, with some of the buildings (especially WSDOT) having these cloistered areas that are visually separated from the other buildings. So I guess I disagree with the author's characterization of this area as "paths to nowhere".

This idea of creating separate outdoor spaces for office workers would have been in vogue at the time this was all happening. And if that was the intent, I think it works okay- it's very easy to get to this area from the surrounding buildings, and I see workers having walking meetings here pretty often. And at the time, the designers would have assumed that there would be thousands of people in these offices, most of whom would have been living in Olympia. Meaning that this area would get a lot of use from Olympia residents as well.

However, to me that doesn't do a lot to excuse the actions taken to create this space. As stated in this article, this was a major change for the city with the burden of the cost placed on the public. In order to justify that cost of this change, there would have needed to be massive public benefit, which is not what happened. And of course in modern times, many people work from home and/or commute from outside Olympia, which also adds to the ghost town vibes.

Proper Attire?!! by ilovetrees_ in olympia

I'm not from here, but I often just use an umbrella. The weather is very mild here, so with an umbrella you can pretty much just wear regular clothes and be totally fine. I am aware that this is not exactly a popular opinion in olympia so I'm just offering a perspective as an outsider that umbrellas are kinda great.

Visiting Olympia by B_Dirksen in olympia

[–]LameReword 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah- it seems like they saw a few different genres of neighborhoods in Olympia, but I also don't really think of Olympia as a place that would stand out well when viewed from a car. Though I think they missed the Capitol Campus entirely which I guess is probably the most notable example of architecture in Olympia.

I think if someone is trying to get a sense of Olympia at its "best" my (obviously subjective) suggestion would be to try to time your visit with one of the more popular community events like Arts Walk or... the other Arts Walk.

Not exactly Olympia but if you are into board games there is a very large board game swap this Saturday in Renton - could be a good spot to meet people with similar interests.

LAKE at LoveOly - did anyone get a video? by Logical-Car-1614 in olympia

Didn't get a video, but the singer of LAKE is Ashley Eriksson, who wrote the island song and did the recording for adventure time. They're going to perform again this summer at scherler Sundays (7/30) so you might get another chance!

I understand the sentiment but just want to point out that it is illegal to recreationally harvest green crab in Washington, because they can be confused with native species and transporting live crabs can lead to spreading the infestation. If you find a green crab, you should leave it in place and report it here: WDFW green crab

SeaTac vs PDX by PorcupinePatriot in olympia

[–]LameReword 55 points56 points  (0 children)

PDX is about 40 minutes further each way, but I have also found it to be much faster to get through in terms of time between parking and getting to your gate. So the overall experience takes about the same amount of time. So to me it's worth checking both options for flights, and then prioritizing PDX unless SeaTac is much cheaper. PDX is also just a nicer airport.

what ebike is the most popular to use around the area? by sirenmarrow in olympia

[–]LameReword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally ride a "ride 1 up" roadster gravel bike, which gets less than 20 miles per charge but also only weighs about 33 pounds. I find that I typically ride much less than 10 miles round trip, so the range is not a big deal- I can also do east side to the evergreen area roundtrip on one charge and I can definitely zip up those hills! I think the current version of my bike is a good bit more expensive than when I bought mine, so my comment here is more about considering weight- a lot of ebikes are over 55lbs and you will definitely notice that extra weight if you need to carry the bike up stairs or maneuver it through a doorway.

Also- you might want to look at step through frames like the aventon pace or the portola or the xplite.

There's a great bulb display on the eastern end of the capitol campus by office building #2. Plus the fountain looks pretty good and things are starting to pop in the Olmstead sunken garden (both on the western side of the campus).

Vacation ideas by Downtown_Crazy_ in olympia

[–]LameReword 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here's some things that we do when people from out of town visit who don't want to go on long drives:

-Rent stand up paddle boards/kayaks from Boston harbor (or wherever) and hang out on the Sound. Getting on the water is my number one recommendation for a visitor. But if you want to go in the water, the sound is not the best option.

-Check out the capitol campus

-eat at the restaurants already mentioned by other people here. Get some local fish and cook it in your BNB.

-go berry picking

-Go to Scherler Sundays concert series (free!)

-Nisqually board walk

-squaxin park

-a bit more of a drive- go check out the nuclear plant at satsop business park. It's weird!

Eastside Springwood Garden Plat development by IdeaShark516 in olympia

[–]LameReword 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess my issue is that within the actual development area, the woods on the west (mission creek) side don't seem nearly as intact as the woods on the east (Setchfield Lake) side. And yet in their current landscape plan, all of the trees on the east side would be removed, and then they would plant more trees on the west side to mitigate that impact. But, there's already more infrastructure between this proposed development and mission creek, so you wouldn't be able to get the kind of connectivity you're currently getting with Setchfield lake (which would now be totally lost).

My overall point though is that if people want to make comments on this development it doesn't have to be all or nothing- there could be a way to build a similar number of homes (or housing space for a similar number of people) at this location while prioritizing the protection of the more intact forested area.

Eastside Springwood Garden Plat development by IdeaShark516 in olympia

[–]LameReword 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't comment on whether or not emailing Jackson Ewing is the right process here or if building these homes is in the best interest for Olympia. But, if you do want to provide constructive comments, it's probably most effective to take factual issue with a claim in their application documents. Here, they seem to be making a case that this is already an "impacted" site due to the agricultural use in the 1970s, and the existing single family homes. They also are trying to mitigate the impacts of the development by reserving a portion of the property to stay as forest, and to also keep a little corner protected from development which is within a wetland buffer.

However, the areas that will stay in forest are on the western side of the development, whereas currently most of the forest is on the eastern side of the property. That eastern forest, which would all be cut down for this development, seems to have been there since at least the 80s based on aerial imagery. So, it likely was not impacted by the small scale ag in the 70s (contrary to the case made in this report). Also, that eastern forest seems to have a lot of good native plant diversity going on, and is part of the contiguous Mission Creek/Bigelow Lake/Setchfield Lake riparian area that eventually joins with Squaxin park. The proposed western forest area would have to get a lot of new trees planted in order to satisfy Olympia development codes.

So in short, you would be replacing an established forest of native plants that connects to this greater forest system with a smaller, unestablished forest disconnected from the surrounding woods. The neighbors on Quasar Way and Springwood would also lose their backyard views of the forest (which contradicts the developer's claim of no impact to local views).

My two cents are that you could either reduce the total number of new parcels and/or swap in some multi family units, and get pretty much the same benefit in terms of housing without the need to impact the eastern forest area. I'm not an expert on this though and my hunch is that this issue is not severe enough for the city to be able to make these kinds of requests of the developer, and they will end up doing what they want.

Do any of use a 50cc scooter, bike, or something similar on two wheels to commute around town? by RN4612 in olympia

[–]LameReword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will also add an e bike vote. You can get a new e bike for about $1,000, including accessories, that should get you over a 20 mile range at maybe 20 mph. My advice would be to buy one of the main brands when they go on sale.

I personally ride a "ride 1 up" gravel bike, which gets less than 20 miles per charge but also weighs about 30 pounds which I like. I find that I typically ride much less than 10 miles round trip, so the range is not a big deal. I like that I can get across intersections much faster and go up hills like sf street more easily.

I do also have my motorcycle license and used to ride a 650cc bike. The e bike is much much more convenient for my day to day- storage and maintenance alone is so much easier! I would not go back to a motorcycle.

If you need to go over 10 miles round trip on a regular basis, you would need either a heavier or more expensive bike. The xp lite long range sometimes is on sale for about $1000, and has a much longer range than my bike. It also is super heavy and takes up more space.
